Standard Test Method for Measurement of Collapse Potential of Soils

Method Statement D5333

This laboratory test covers the determination of the magnitude of one-dimensional collapse that occurs when unsaturated soils are inundated with fluid. The Collapse Index (Ie), percent is defined as the relative magnitude of soil collapse at 200 kPa as a basic index property of soil (ASTM D5333, Clause 3.2.2 and 5.2) and for classification purpose (ASTM D5333, Clause 5.3.3, Table 1). The Collapse Potential (Ic), percent is defined as the relative magnitude of soil collapse at any stress level (ASTM D5333, Clause 3.2.3).

1.1

Test Requirements Before testing, the requirement for specific applications shall be addressed as follows: (a) (b) (c) Undisturbed or remoulded specimens. Moisture content and density for achieving remoulded specimens (eg. 95% of MDD). Either Ie or Ic is applicable and Ic is normally specified for design loading requirements rather than for classification purpose.

Laboratory Equipment Standard one-dimensional consolidation ring, consolidation cell and loading device. Calibrated weights set. Digital balance, 300g capacity readable to 0.01g for moisture determination. Drying oven, capable of maintaining a temperature of 105C to 110C. Procedural Steps No water stage Place the prepared specimen in consolidation ring in the loading device immediately after determining the initial wet mass and height of the specimen following trimming (undisturbed) or compaction (remoulded). Enclose the specimen ring, filter paper and porous stones (top capping) as soon as possible with a loose fitting plastic membrane, moist towel to minimise change in specimen water content and volume due to evaporation. Apply a seating stress of 5 kPa and apply first loading increment within 5 minutes. The load increments of 6.25, 12.5, 25, 50, 100, 200, etc, kPa shall be applied at 1 hour interval. Record the deformation before each load increment is applied. The stress to be applied to the soil prior to wetting (inundate) depends on whether Ie or Ic is to be determined as appropriate for the design situation.

Water (distilled) added stage As an (Ie) example, after loading at 200kPa (no water stage) and recording deformation for 1 hour, removed the plastic membrane and moist towel to inundate the specimen with water. 1.3.8 The specimen with water added at 200kPa is set for recording deformation but for a longer duration. 1.3.9 Record deformation versus time at approximately 0.1, 0.17, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 15, 30 min and 1, 2, 4, and 24 hours. 1.3.10 Further load increments of 400, 800, 1600, 3200, etc, kPa shall be applied at 24 hours interval and deformation recorded as in Step 1.3.9 1.3.11 The load increments in Step 1.3.10 are applied as needed or until the slope of the deformation versus stress level curve is obtained. 1.3.7 1.2 1.2.1 Calculations, expression of results and test report Presentation of results is in accordance to ASTM D5333-03, Clause 11.
