Exploring the paradigms of new energy

As energy security becomes a burning issue, the need for energy sources and new technologies becomes inevitable. With a growing focus now on new alternatives, Volvox Energy is working on developing technologies for producing algal bio-diesel since the last three years. We have been researching on various aspects of photo-bio reactor design. Our rst pilots are already operational and they have shown good results in terms of algal yield and sequestration e ciency. We have tried to incorporate operational simplicity in our designs and are looking at commercially scaling up.

Another critical aspect in the development of technology is the design and optimisation of the oil extraction process. The economics of the extraction and the e ciency play a very critical role in deciding the actual reaction steps. We have worked on several possible chains to determine the best possible reaction sequence and a corresponding reactor. With our major focus being on the use of solvent based extraction methods, our corresponding reactor designs have also shown successful results in terms of overall performance. We have ensured ease in construction and operation.

The overall capital cost and the corresponding per litre costs are a major concern to the success of this technology. Our main goal at technology development has been to improve on current capital costs and operational costs to deliver the lowest possible per litre cost. We expect to bring signi cant value in terms of costs. With a design that can easily work with various sources of carbon like power plants, the applicability to the industry is quite signi cant.

We are looking at building our rst commercial plants by 2014 and complete our rst round of patent grants by the end of 2012.

Brighter, E cient Lighting Solutions

Electricity consumption in lighting is probably the single most uniform and basic kind of consumption. In domestic households it is quite signi cant while in industries it is the most utilized, continuous load. We specialise in the development of e cient LED lighting solutions that save energy while delivering the same amount of lumens and light quality. Our solutions have a long operational life of 75,000 hours. We deliver turnkey lighting solutions to both industrial and domestic consumers for a wide range of operating requirements.

The most important part of our design is the e ciency of our electronic drivers and the regulation of temperature in our xtures. The e ciency of our design means that the life is greatly enhanced while maintaining overall brightness. We have also developed solutions to improve the colors especially the warmth based on speci c requirements and applications. Our in-house research and design team ensure that only the best products in terms of life and e ciency are made available t consumers.

Our most signi cant product is the industrial lighting segment that can result in tremendous savings to industries using heavy lights in excess of 100W. Capacity utilization is an important factor while calculating payback. Industrial users who have very high capcity utilization tend to achieve quicker paybacks when compared to domestic consumers. Our lights are weather proof and can be used in outdoor applications. Street lighting is also an area of expertise where signi cant potential exists.

Dainichi Concrete Company, Japan The Japanese solar market has seen a recent spurt in demand backed by favorable feed in tari s announced by the governement. Dainichi is a leading concrete solutions provider in the Japanese market and is developing a 40 kW solar plant in its factory. Volvox Energy is advising them on the technical design and mangement. Noel Media and Advertising, India Noel Media and Advertising had already secured a 1 MW allocation in Tamil Nadu under the RPSSGP at a tari of Rs 18.54 per unit for 25 years. We were involved in raising funds for the promoters to complete the project.

Matrix Global, India Matrix Global is a leading solution provider in Africa and Asia working on a broad spectrum of turnkey projects across di erent sectors. Matrix Global plan to apply for and acquire 1-2 MW project allocations in Jharkhand and Haryana. Volvox Energy is advising them on the technical aspects related to these applications.

Shikoku Electric, Japan Shikoku Electric owns and operates about 7500 MW of power assets in Japan which include thermal, nuclear and solar power stations. Shikoku Electric is looking at leveraging its domestic competence to tap the renewable energy markets in India. We are advising them on the development of solar power plants.

British Gas, UK With gas prices rising in the recent past many of British Gas consumers are contemplating a shift to solid fuels. Volvox Energy is undertaking an Energy Study on British Gas clients to identify potential Energy saving possibilities to maintain competitiveness of gas as a fuel.

Thomas & Naaz Energy, Australia Dr. Thomas and his associates were planning to invest in the Indian renewables market and were looking for opportunities in wind and solar energy. Volvox Energy has advised them on various regulatory and technical aspects related to the project.
