Needs for Us and Others 4th Lesson - 23rd October 1994 " Your Heavenly Father knows you need them all " 1. Opening Prayer Blessing. May you give birth to Jesus in your heart. And may your heart be filled with love for others. May you bear whatever sorrow you have with the patience of Mary. May you always lift your heart to God. And may God lift up your head in joy. And may God bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. 2. Today's Gospel the story of Bartimaeus the Blind Beggar. Bartimaeus a blind beggar, is sitting beside the road. He hears a lot of noise and commotion and is told that it is Jesus passing by. He began to shout Jesus Son of David take pity on me. Many of the people scolded him and told him to be quiet. But he shouted even more loudly "Son of David, take pity on me ". Jesus stopped and said call him. So they called the blind man. "Cheer up " they said " Get up, He is calling you". He threw off his cloak, jumped up and came to Jesus. "What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him. "Teacher" the blind man answered, I want to see again". "Go" Jesus told him, "your faith has made you well." At once he was able to see and followed Jesus on the road. Today's Gospel is about faith, love and Jesus's unlimited generosity. In another way blindness can mean being blocked off from Jesus. Calling Bartimaeus can mean people telling us about Jesus. Getting up is all about following Jesus teachings. Faith is all about being healed in our hearts and having no problems with life. What can Jesus do for us ? 3. What do we need others for ? Food, shelter, education, love, kindness and acceptance. 4. 5. 6. What can we do for others ? Write a list of your needs and the needs of others. We believe every good gift, every perfect gift, comes from our Father whose love can never change.

7. Before you go to bed tonight, think of two gifts that God has given you. Thank God in your heart.

Jesus Calms the Storm 5th Lesson 30th October 1994 " Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid " 1. Opening Prayer We said a prayer for you today and know God must of heard. We felt the answer in our hearts although He spoke no word. We didn't ask for wealth or fame we knew you wouldn't mind we asked him to send treasures of a far more lasting kind. We asked that He be near you at the start of each new day to grant you health and blessings and friends to share the way. We asked for happiness for you in all things great and small but it was for His loving care we prayed the most of all. " Jesus, you know that at times we feel nervous and afraid. Be with us always to calm and strengthen us. Amen. " 2. Today's Gospel What is the message for us ? 3. Explore unhappy and scary experiences. i) ii) iii) iv) When you feel sick what do you do ? When you feel scared what do you do ? Why ? Have you ever been lost ? What about thunderstorms and lightening, who made you feel safe ?

4. The story of Jesus calming the storm " One day Jesus said to his disciples " Lets go over to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and set out. As they sailed , He fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. The disciples went and woke him saying, " Master, Master, were going to drown ". He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters, the storm subsided and all was calm. Where is your faith ?" He asked the disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, " Who is this ?" He commands and even the winds and the water and they obey Him." i) ii) iii) iv) How do you think the Apostles felt when the storm arose ? What do you think they did when Jesus calmed the storm ? How did they feel ? What kind of person do you think Jesus is ? What difference did Jesus being there make to his friends ?

Jesus is always with us when we are unhappy and afraid. He comforts us and protects us and loves us very, very much. 5. Draw Jesus calming the storm. 6. We believe that Jesus will answer our prayers and keep us safe. 7. Before you go to bed tonight think of 2 times that Jesus has answered your prayers. Thank God in your heart.

Helping Hands 6th Lesson 6th November 1994. St. John tells us " Children, our love is not to be just words or mere talk, but something real and active." 1. Opening Prayer "God our Father, Jesus has taught us to help others. Help us to see the needs of those around us and to use our hands for the good of others". 2. Today's Gospel, what does it mean. 3. Following Jesus example. Many people have tried to copy Jesus example of helping others. Some people have copied him so well that they became very holy and died as Saints. All Saints were filled with the presence of Jesus and loved him above all things. They were very loving and helpful people. Some of the Saints are St. Vincent De Paul, St. Teresa, the child of Jesus, St. John Bosco, St. Elizabeth the Queen who served. These people were very kind to the poor. Jesus is calling us all to be Saints and we surely will if we keep praying for as long as it takes. The Saints were no different to you and me but they tried harder than some of us. So let us pray to God that we might try harder to please him and to help others. Another kind person who is a good example to all of us is Dr. Tom Dooley. Also we can learn much from Mother Teresa of Calcutta example. 4. Think of all the things you can do with your hands. Close your eyes and say a silent prayer of thanks to God. Remember though you are children you have many opportunities to use your hands to help, especially at home. 5. Jesus is always calling us to do good things not to just talk about being good. He has told us a story about a man who had two sons. He told them to go and work in his garden. The older one said, "I don't want to", but he was sorry later and went. The younger one said, "Yes sir," but didn't do it. Jesus also showed us many, many times how to help with our hands by what he did. He healed many people, He washed the feet of the disciples at the Last Supper. 6. Jesus wants us to help other people as much as we can. How can you help others when you are older? What gifts can you give? 7. We believe Jesus helped people who needed help. Jesus wants us to help, too. Jesus said,"This is how everyone will know you are my followers. They will see how you love one another." There are many people helping others. Ask your family to tell you about someone else who loves Jesus and helps others. Tell the us. St. Vincent De Paul St. Vincent De Paul who did so much for the poor and particularly the galley slaves of his time, was to begin with a proud, vain and snobbish youngster looking down on people in shabby clothes and even his own father. By prayer and effort he overcame his faults and his bad humour. His nature gradually became one of gentleness and kindness. Have you heard of the St. Vincent De Paul Society? What sort of work do they do? Do you know where there is a poor box?

St. Elizabeth the Queen who helped the poor. St. Elizabeth was Queen of Portugal. She provided shelter for traveller's and provided for the needs of poor girls. She also provided for the needs of many poor people. St. John Bosco St John Bosco was born nearly 200 years ago in Italy. He was a Priest and dedicated his life to help children with no parents. Because of what he did there are now hundreds of homes and schools all over the world who are dedicated to helping children as St. John Bosco did. Even in Hong Kong you can find St. John Bosco homes and schools. St. Teresa the child of Jesus. St. Teresa was born in France over 100 years ago. When she was 15 years old she became a nun just like her sisters. She loved Jesus very, very much and gave up her whole life to please Jesus by always praying for the good of others like you and me. Mother Teresa of Calcutta Mother Teresa went to India as a Nun and a teacher for rich girls. However she witnessed so much poverty including people living and dying on the streets of India that she decided to devote her life to helping the poor by providing them food, clothes, shelter and education. Mother Teresa is still alive today and is an example to all of us on how we may better serve our fellow men and women and please God. Dr. Tom Dooley Tom Dooley was an American and grew up in a Catholic family. He wanted to be rich and became a Doctor. He was sent here to Asia and he saw so many poor sick people who did not have enough money to get well that he changed all his plans and his life to help. He built many hospitals and clinics to care for sick people who were poor.

Jesus Always Shows Concern for Others 7th Lesson 13th November 1994 1. Opening Prayer " Our Father " 2. Today's Gospel, what does it mean for us ? 3. When Jesus came on Earth he showed us what God is like - Compassionate, kind, and concerned about our every need. In the miracle of the loaves and fishes, not only does Jesus foretell of the Blessed Eucharist, but he shows how much he understands the human needs of people and how practical he was in fulfilling them. 4. Who are the people in our lives who have helped us and look after us. By their goodness and caring they are telling us of the loving kindness of God. Do you know who shows us best about God our loving Father ? One of the most important things that Jesus taught us was to love one another. How can we learn to do this ? Did Jesus help people when they were afraid ? Tell us a story about this. Tell us some stories about Jesus serving people i.e. about Jesus curing people i.e. Blind, Deaf, Lepers. Jesus loved everyone and was always thinking about their needs. 5. The Story of Jesus Feeding the Five Thousand. 6. Revision: a) Belonging, being brothers and sisters, belonging to family and a larger community the Church. b) We are special people, God made everyone of us different and so we are all special and precious to him. c) Needs of Ourselves and Other people, we all need other people to live do you remember the food cycle ? d) Jesus Calms the Storm, Jesus will always there to help us when we are afraid, always remember to pray when you have difficulties. e) Helping Hands, Jesus is asking us to follow his example and the example of his Saints in helping others. We have to be doers as well as sayers. 7. Closing Prayer " Dear Jesus, you were always kind and thoughtful to others. You wanted to show how much you and your heavenly Father loved them. Help us to be kind and considerate to all our family and everyone at school so that we may show God's love to all those who know us. Amen. 8. Before you go to bed tonight think of two times during last week that someone showed you kindness and thank God in your heart.

Jesus Our Friend and Leader 8th Lesson 20th November 1994 1. Opening Prayer. 2. Today's Gospel " Feast of Christ the King ". Today we are reminded that as Christians Jesus is at the centre of our lives. Jesus has conquered death. Jesus can only be our King if we accept Him by our love, by our serving Him and our following His teachings. We are Jesus's army and his weapons are truth and justice. We cannot follow Jesus our King and leader unless we know him and we will never know him unless we talk to him and know the bible well. Jesus is a King who loves unconditionally, who forgives, who helps and cures the sick, who wants to share his life forever, who wants us to share with others the life and happiness we have because of Jesus. 3. Lets talk about other leaders such as the Catholic Church the Pope, the Governor of Hong Kong and any other leaders. Why are they leaders ? Who is the greatest leader ? Who will never let you down and is always there ? 3. What are friends ? Who is our greatest friend ? Why ? How did Jesus show his friendship ? Jesus is a very good friend to you too. He knows all about you and he loves you very much. In the Bible we read that Jesus loves us and wants us to live full happy lives. In the Bible Jesus says in his own words " I came to give you life, life in the fullness ". Jesus also says " No longer do I call you servants but I have called you friends ". 4. We must try to be good friends to other people. By doing this, we share some of the beautiful love which Jesus has given us. Giving love and friendship helps us to grow too. How can we be good friends with somebody ? by sharing things, by listening. Can you think of the special needs that some people might have and how you could act like Jesus towards them i.e. visiting them when they are sick, keeping lonely people company, running errands for sick or disabled people. 5. Poem " If we have good news to share " 6. Before you go to bed tonight think of the many times friends have been kind to you and thank God in your heart. 7. We believe that Jesus is our King and friend and is always there to help us.

Prayer and Trust 9th Lesson 27th November 1994 1. Opening Prayer " Praise God " 2. Today's Gospel, the 1st Sunday in Advent what does this mean to us. Today we start looking forward to Jesus Birthday, celebrating the arrival of Jesus in all our lives. This is another opportunity for us to make ourselves good before God by correcting in ourselves the things we know to be wrong i.e. being cheeky to grown ups and our classmates, making mummy or the maid do things that we could easily do ourselves, arguing with others, not playing with certain children and any other things we can think of that make us naughty. Today's gospel reminds also of the end of an age and the coming again of Jesus Christ so we must be ready to meet with him on good terms. That means he must be able to see the goodness in us. 3. Let's talk about trust. Who can we trust in our lives and why? The Bus Driver, the policeman, the postman, mum and dad? Trust plays an important part of our lives. 4. What about us, can people trust us? Why? What do we like to hear people say about us? Do our friends trust us to be kind and helpful? Do our pets trust us to take care of them? Think of some trusting words. 5. People trusted Jesus when he was on earth. Tell some stories of people trusting Jesus i.e. Bartimaeus. Do you know the story of St. Peter trusting Jesus. 6. Trusting Jesus is another way of praying. Think of sometimes when you need to pray and trust Jesus. 7. You must try to be trustworthy children yourselves. Children that others can depend on. 8. Write a trusting pray to Jesus. 9. Before you go to sleep tonight think about how Jesus helped you and thank God in your heart.

ADVENT 10th Lesson 4th December 1994 1. Opening Prayer " Praise God " 2. Today's Gospel is the 2nd Sunday in Advent. Today's Gospel is about John the Baptist. John the Baptist came to prepare the way for Jesus by telling everyone that Jesus is coming and asking them to make themselves clean by saying sorry to God for all the things that they had done wrong. John initiated the sacrament of Baptism where we are cleansed of all sin and first receive the Holy Spirit in our lives. 3. Advent is a wonderful time of the year to remember how much we owe to God and thank Him for everything. What things can you thank God for ? 4. How can you thank God ? Prayer ? You can think of Mary the Mother of Jesus and how she always said Yes to God. We can also say Yes to God by being obedient, by helping others, by sharing work, by going to Church, by being kind to someone we don't like, by doing our school work well and listening to our teacher. Don't talk whilst the teacher is talking. When we do things well we are using the talents that God gave us and this pleases Him. 5. Advent is a time of waiting for Jesus and remembering God's promise to send us Jesus to be our friend and constant companion in life. What do we promise ? Do we keep our promises ? 6. Advent is a time of waiting for Jesus because God wanted to get closer to us so that we would know him and love through Jesus Christ. 7. Draw a picture of Jesus coming.

We Discover God's Beautiful World 12th Lesson 8th January 1995 1. Opening Prayer - Praise God. 2. Today's Gospel - Epiphany of our Lord. In today's gospel we hear about the 3 Kings who visit the Birth of Jesus. a) Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, b) Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. c) When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. d) And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. e) And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judea: for thus it is written by the prophet, f) And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Judea, art not the least among the princes of Judea or out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. g) Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. h) And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. i) When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. j) When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. k) And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. l) And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country. 3.Today we think about all the wonderful things that God has created for us. What things can we think of ? Why did God create all these wonderful things ? In all this God is showing his love for us. People care for the earth and the earth cares for people. God has told us in the bible " not to worry about life ". God is providing all our needs. 4.How can we show our thanks to God ? Putting all rubbish in bins, being neat and tidy at home and in school. We must all try to keep God's world beautiful.

Praising and Thanking God 13th Lesson 22nd January 1995 1. Opening Prayer: Praise God 2. Today's Gospel, in today's Gospel St Luke tells about Jesus visit to his home town of Nazareth and his explanation to the people of his mission in this life. This mission is to bring good news to the poor, freedom to prisoners, new sight to the blind, help to the downtrodden and to tell everyone about God's goodness and generously. Jesus mission is now our mission and we must try to do our best in playing our part in completing Jesus mission. How can you help Jesus? 3."ALLELUIA GIVE THANKS TO GOD FOR HE IS GOOD. HIS LOVE IS EVERLASTING." 4. Why do we thank you? Do we sometimes forget to say Thank you? How do we feel if someone says Thank you to you ? Hoe do you feel if they forget? What do you notice in the classroom? Why do we and they forget? Is it because we did not notice what they had given or done? 5. We must try to notice the good things that people do. What good things did you notice this morning? Close your eyes and think of all the good things that have happened to you and pray for those people that have made it possible. "Dear Jesus help me to notice the good things people do and to be grateful." 6. When we go to church we notice God's goodness and we should be praising Him and Thanking Him all through the Mass. One thing we should never forget is that GOD CARES FOR US. 7. Now i am going to tell you about a little boy called David. David is the same age as you and has lots of friends. He lives with his mum and dad and big sister Susan. David had everything he wanted until his dad lost his job. Now his dad did not have enough money to buy nice treats. David's mum and dad had to be very careful how they spent money and there was none left over to out on trips and to buy new clothes. Susan needed a new jumper and David needed lots of things for school but there was no spare money. Do you think they become sad and sulky. No they had a special secret, they trusted in God and new He would provide everything they really needed. Every night they prayed together and thanked God for what they had and asked Him for what they needed. They knew that He cared for them . God often answers our prays through other people. Their neighbours gave them some food and some school things for David. Other people gave them things and bought a jumper for Susan. Every day they thanked God that there were so many kind and generous people and that their prays were being answered. One day a special letter arrived ,yes it was a new job for dad. Before bed that night David, Susan and their parents talked to God and thanked Him for taking care of them in such a wonderful way. This story is happening in many places all the time.

14th Lesson 29th January 1995 1, Opening Prayer: Hail Mary 2. Today's Gospel. In today's Gospel, St. Luke's tells us the story of Jesus visiting his hometown of Nazareth and the people not listening to Him and not taking His advice. Jesus explains to them that unless they listen to Him they will not be saved. 3. Last week we learnt that God cares for us and that we should praise and thank Him for all the good things that happened to us. Can anyone remember something good happening to them last week? Did you thank that person and thank God? 4. Today's lesson is about Mary Our Mother. Who is Mary? What stories do you know about Mary? 5. Jesus in his wonderful kindness and consideration wants to share His Mother with us. He shares His Mother with us so that we may have an opportunity to ask Mary to ask Jesus to help us. Mary will also speak to Jesus to and ask Him to forgive us when we do wrong. Jesus will never refuse his Mother. Mary is very important in our lives because she is very close to Jesus and always listens to Him. 6. Mary is also a wonderful example to us of loving God and loving others. She is also an example to us of trusting God and obeying all his commandments. Mary was born without sin and we call this the Immaculate Conception and she was without sin all her live. She went straight to heaven when she died and we call this the Assumption. All of these events are still remembered and celebrated in Church today. 7. Many people have seen Mary and she is especially fond of visiting children who pray to her. One of her visits happened about 100 years ago in France in a place called Lourdes, where she visited 3 poor children but very devout children. Their names were Bernadette, Marie Antoinette and Jeanne. Our Lady appeared to them many times. One of the important messages that Mary had for the children and it is a message for us is to pray for sinners. 8. So let us remember how important Mary is in our lives and ask Mary every day to pray for us.

We are Loved by God Our Father 15th Lesson 5.2.95 1. Opening Prayer: Our Father 2. Today's Gospel, we hear about how St. Peter, St. James and St. John left everything to follow Jesus. This is a story of absolute trust in Jesus Christ and also a story of obedience. From the day that Jesus performed his miracle on the shores of lake Gennesaret until they died they tried to do their best for Jesus. Today's gospel is on page 35 of your bibles'. God is Love 3. In today's lesson we hear about the story of shy Sharon. Everyday at the school that Sharon went to, the children in the class were invited by the teacher to tell the class a story about something that had happened to them. Alan told the class about the day he went to the Zoo with his family and the Hippo that was as big as a bus and the Lion that was very scary when it opened it's mouth. Elizabeth told the story of the day she went Christmas shopping with her mum. Sharon wanted to tell the class some news but she could never pluck up enough courage to do so and also she could never think of anything interesting to say. She was very sad about this and one evening she told her dad her problem. Dad put his arm around her and told her not to worry. Let's go into the garden and see what we can see he told her. Sharon saw a beautiful butterfly and she and her dad caught it. Sharon's dad helped her to find out all about this butterfly in a book belonging to him. Now Sharon had a wonderful story to tell the class about the butterfly and the life that it lives. Nobody had ever told a story like this before. That night Sharon went to bed thinking about the wonderful father she had and all of the kind help she had received. Next day dad gave Sharon a lift to school as usual and she was so excited about the story she was going to tell. But when she got into the classroom all the children were around Billy Smith who had the same news as Sharon. Sharon was bitterly disappointed and it was very difficult for her to stop from crying. When she got home that day she told her father the sad news of not being able to tell her story. Sharon's dad comforted her and told her not to worry because they would think of something else. Sharon then noticed a picture of her dad and put it into her school satchel. This was going to be her story. The next morning in class Sharon told her story about her dad who had brown eyes, brown hair, was taller than her mum and worked very hard for the benefit of the whole family. When I am sad or unhappy she told them, he comforts me. When I don't listen to him he forgives me when I say sorry. He loves me and makes me happy and I think he is the best father in all the world. I love him so much and will try to do what he wishes because I know he loves and cares for me very much. When the class heard this story they clapped and clapped. This was the best story that they had heard. Sharon was so excited to tell her dad the good news that her news was the best news in the class.

4. Do you think Sharon's dad cared for her ? Do you think he loved her ? Did Sharon love her dad ? How do you know that ? By talking to him ? Sharing her worries and concerns ? We all have a special Father who loves and cares for us 24 hours a day, every day. God our Father will never stop loving us and caring for us. God is always with us waiting for us to share our thoughts and our time with him. Jesus cared so much for us he suffered a horrible and painful death that we might live. Jesus is for ever showing us his great love each and every day, by giving us life, health, love of parents, food, drink, night and day and so many things that we will never be able to count them. We should all thank God each and every day in our prayers for the great things he is doing for us and we should show him how thankful we are by loving our parents, brothers, sisters, friends, classmates and all those we meet. God is calling all of us, children and grown ups alike to love one another as He loves us.

Jesus Our Greatest Gift 16th Lesson 12.2.95 1. Opening Prayer, Praise God. 2. Today's Gospel is from the Gospel of St. Luke and Jesus us gives us a very great lesson here by blessing the poor, the hungry, the sad and the persecuted. Jesus is also warning all those who are rich , full, and those who enjoy too much the things of this world. Jesus is telling us that the standards and values of this world are false and wrong . The right thing is for Jesus Christ to be at the centre of our lives. Only then can we be really happy and enjoy life to the full. 3. In today's lesson we are going to explore the subject of gifts and try to find out the greatest gift that there ever was. Tell us about gifts. 4. What gifts has God given us ? Life, Parents, our world, food, drink, night, day, love comfort, health, eyes, ears, our whole bodies and so many gifts that we can never count them. 5. What do you think the greatest gift is ? Why ? Because Jesus died that we might live. What do we mean by this ? How are you using the gift of Jesus in your lives ? 6. How are we going to use the gifts that God has given us ? By following Jesus example of loving God and always helping others. How can we be of help to others? By showing kindness, by listening to others and sharing what we have with others including our time.

Jesus Shows His Love 17th Lesson 19.2.95 1. Opening Prayer: I said a prayer for you do today. 2. Today's Gospel. Jesus is again giving us a challenge to love our enemies when he says in the gospel of St. Luke 19: 27: 28: 29: 30: 31: 32: 34: But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despise you. And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also. Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. Sinners also do even the same. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. Your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. 36: 37: Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

3. In today's lesson we are going to see our Jesus Shows his love and how we can follow his example. I want to tell you the story of Shane and the sick dog. The family dog had 3 puppies and one of them was very sick. Shane asked his dad if he could have the sick puppy but Shane's dad told him that the puppy was too weak and that it would never get well. Shane pleaded with his dad to give him a chance to make the puppy well and Shane's dad agreed. This made Shane very happy and he shared his good news with his sisters. They made the puppy a warm bed and fed him with milk every day. Shane made sure that the puppy was well looked after and very soon it got well through Shane's love and care. Shane called his puppy Jip and they were great friends and did everything together. Shane was always hugging Jip and giving him tit bits of food. But one day after school when Shane arrived home there was no Jip to meet him. Mum came out to meet Shane and broke the sad news that Jip had been run over by a car and killed. Shane was shattered and very upset. Shane's Mum put her arms around him and explained that the whole family loved and missed Jip. 4. How did Shane show his love for Jip ? How do you show your love ? How did Shane's Mum show her love ? Think of the many people that you love. 5. Do you remember the story of the blind man waiting by the side of the road when Jesus passed by. Well I am gong to tell it again. Jesus was on his last journey passing through Jericho on his way to Jerusalem, There was a blind man sitting by the side of the road who could hear a tremendous excitement as Jesus was passing by. The blind man asked what all the excitement was and was told

that it was Jesus passing by. He began to shout son of David have mercy on me. The crowd nearby told him to be quite but he would not. This was his big chance and he did not want to waste it. Jesus asked him" what do you want me to do for you " Lord I want to see" he replied . Jesus told him receive your sight your faith has healed you. Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus praising God. When all the people saw this they also praised God. 6. What does this story tell us about Jesus ?

We Show Love and I am a Child of God 18th Lesson 26. 2. 95 1. Opening Prayer. I said a Prayer for you Today. 2. Today's Gospel. In today's Gospel Jesus tells us that a blind man leading a blind man will surely fall into a hole. Meaning that by following people who are not properly informed you will surely go astray. All who teach others should be properly trained and well read. Otherwise they are likely to lead people in wrong ideas. In this we should all be careful of not trying to tell others things when we don't really know ourselves. In another part of the Gospel Jesus warns us not to find fault with others but firstly to examine ourselves and make sure we correct our own faults before we look for the faults in others. If we honestly do this we will not find too much fault with others but will understand them better. 3. Last week we covered how Jesus shows his love by helping others, never saying no, sharing his time , curing people, praying for others and eventually dying for all of us. We also covered how we can also show our love by copying Jesus in all these things. 4. Lets consider some practical examples of acting out choices of loving our not loving. Timmy had a jar full of marbles. Bill had lost all his. Bill Knew where Timmy kept his marbles and wanted some very badly. What did Bill do ? What did Jesus want Bill to do ? Nikkei had a ring for her birthday and wore it to school. Everyone thought it was a very nice ring. Nikkei lost it during playtime and Suzanne found it. What did Suzanne do with the ring? What did Jesus want her to do ? Michael was praying for his dad who was ill when his sister Marie came along. She thought she might make him laugh. What did Michael do? What did Jesus want him to do? 5. Sometimes it is not easy to love the way Jesus loves. Lets discuss this. How can we try to love like Jesus. 6. How are you children of God? through Baptism? What happens when we are Baptised? We receive the Holy Spirit, we become children of God and join his large family. Jesus is our brother. What do we call God's family? The Church or the people of God. How can we thank God for taking us in as part of his family? By trying to act like Jesus.

Belonging to God's Family 19th Lesson 5th March 1995 1. Opening Prayer "I said a prayer for you today" 2. Today's Gospel. We hear the story of Jesus being filled with the Holy Spirit going into the desert and fasting for 40 days. During this 40 days the devil tried to tempt Jesus to go against the will of God by tempting him to eat food. Jesus told the devil "that you cannot live on food alone but on every word that comes from God". The devil also promised Jesus all the riches of the world if Jesus would worship him. Jesus told the devil that "Worship the lord your God and Him alone." The devil asked Jesus to prove he was the son of God by throwing himself of a high place. Again Jesus is not tempted and gives the devil the perfect answer "Do not put the Lord your God to the test". In this story Jesus gives us a very good example of how to fight the devil and his evil intentions. When ever we are tempted to do wrong let us try to call to mind this story and ask ourselves what would Jesus want us to do. 3. Last week we learnt that we belong to God's family through the sacrament of Baptism. We also know that God's family is called a Church and we are also called children of God. A Church is not just a building it is a group of people who come together every Sunday to praise and thank God for everything that he has given us. 4. Each of us in this classroom is an important member of the Church. We show by our presence here today that we are really trying to care about our Father in heaven and our brothers and sisters in the Church. By our presence we share our prayers with all in praising and thanking God. We are also sharing one of our most valuable things which is our time. We see others and we feel encouraged and not alone in seeking the presence of God in our lives. Others also see us and hopefully they are also encouraged. A very important thing about our Church is that through our prayers said together and through the Gospel reading we have a wonderful opportunity to here the word of God. So we should be as attentive as we can. 5. The Church is God's family here in this world. It is for all of us no matter who we are and whether we are rich or poor. We are all the same in the eyes of God. To be part of God's family we must learn to live like children of God. God loves everyone. We must try to love everyone. Jesus has shown us how to do this. Through prayers and good deeds. 6. Now I am going to tell you the story of a great Saint who was a wonderful example of loving God and loving people, St. Teresa the little child of Jesus. St. Teresa was born in France about 120 years ago. That is not such a long time ago as some people today are 120 years old. She had a brother and sisters but her brother and some sisters died when they were very young. St. Teresa's parents loved Jesus very much and the whole family went to church as often as they could. sometimes everyday. St. Teresa's mother died when she was only 4 years old but she remembered her mother all her life with great love and affection even though she died when St. Teresa was so young. St Teresa always wanted to give her life to Jesus and became a

Nun like the rest of her sisters. St. Teresa died when she was only 24 years old. Why is St. Teresa a saint? She surrendered herself absolutely to the will of God and tried her best each everyday to please God in everything she did. What did St. Teresa teach us? She taught us the "little way to heaven". What is St. Teresa's little way to heaven? It is doing small things with a big heart because of her love for Jesus, knowing that this is what he wants us to do. St. Teresa says her little way to heaven is the way of spiritual childhood and absolute self surrender to God. How can we also follow this little way to heaven? By smiling at people, by smiling even though we are sad, by giving up our time to listen to someone, by not speaking ill of others, by trying to be friends with those that have few friends, by always being polite to all even when people are being rude to us. These are some of the small things that we can start to do.

Our Mary Mother of God 25th Lesson 7th May 1995 1. Opening Prayer. We said a prayer for you today and know God must of heard. 2. Today's gospel is Jesus reminding us that we are God's sheep and as long as we try to listen to God we will never be lost. We can see a similar story to this in our bible on page 88. 3. Today we are going to talk about Our Mary mother of God. What do we know about Mary? She was the mother of Jesus, her husband was St. Joseph our patron Saint. Mary lived in the town of Nazareth and her family is called the Holy Family. Mary was born without sin and never committed any sin in her whole life. This is a wonderful example to all of us. We call Mary's birth without sin the Immaculate Conception. When Mary died she went straight to heaven and we call this the Assumption. We know that Mary was present at the crucifixion of Jesus and watched die a brutally cruel and murderous death. How sad Mary must have felt to see such cruelty to her Son. Mary is a marvellous example in trusting, loving and following the will of God. Mary was always obedient to God's will and that is why she so special and loved within the church. Mary is the Mother of the church and is our Mother too. When we die Mary will be there to guide us and comfort us in our heavenly home. What other stories do we know about Mary? The feast at Cana and finding Jesus in the temple. Do we all know the Hail Mary? Do we say it every day? Do we know that Mary spends all her time praying for us? What can we do in return? Love her son Jesus Christ.

Celebrating and Remembering 27th Lesson 14th May 1995 1. 2. Opening Prayer. I said a prayer for you to today. Today's gospel is about something Jesus said to the Apostles at the last supper and has meaning for us. Jesus told his Apostles about a new commandment which is to love one another. By showing that we love one another Jesus tells us that we are showing our love for God. Today's lesson is about Sundays. Sundays are days that we set aside to celebrate the memory of Jesus and to share in the last supper through Holy Communion. Lets discuss celebrations. What is a celebration? A party, a special meal, a birthday, Christmas, Easter. How do we feel about being invited to a celebration? What is the first thing we do when we are giving a birthday party? Send invitations. How would you feel if nobody accepted your invitation? But your invitations are accepted and your friends celebrate with you. What goes on at the party? Thanking, listening, bringing gifts, eating special foods and singing. 5. 6. On Sundays we also have a special invitation to join God's family and celebrate together. Did you know that going to Church on Sunday is accepting God's invitation to celebrate. In Church we have the opportunity to thank God for the gift of life and all the things He has given to us. We also have the chance to share a special meal of the body and blood of Jesus Christ. In receiving Holy Communion we touch and feel Jesus. This should be a wonderful experience for all of us to get so close to God. We listen to the word of God. How many of us are not listening to the priest? Try to listen because this is an important way of hearing God speak to you. If you listen carefully you may hear a special message that God has for you. Let us always remember Sunday as a special day to say yes to God's invitation to us, to join Him in Church with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Helping Hands 6th Lesson 12th November 1995. St. John tells us " Children, our love is not to be just words or mere talk, but something real and active." 1. Opening Prayer "God our Father, Jesus has taught us to help others. Help us to see the needs of those around us and to use our hands for the good of others". 2. Today's Gospel, is about what happens to us when we die. Jesus tells us that we shall go to heaven to live with him there. Jesus goes on to explain that when we are in heaven we are like angels. Vincent De Paul who did so much for the poor and particularly the galley slaves of his time, was to begin with a proud, vain and snobbish youngster looking down on people in shabby clothes and

even his own father. St.Elizabeth was Queen of Portugal.

Jesus Always Shows Concern for Others 7th Lesson 19th November 1995 1. 2. 3. Opening Prayer " I said a Prayer for you today Today's Gospel, what does it mean for us ? Jesus tells us something about the end of the World in todays gospel he tells us that there are going to be wars, disasters, plagues, earthquakes and fearful as well as great signs from heaven. Jesus also tells us not to worry as he will protect us in all these things. Jesus Our Friend and Leader 8th Lesson 26th November 1995 1. We are Jesus army and his weapons are truth and justice.

Mary Our Mother 14th Lesson 28th January 1996 1, Opening Prayer: Hail Mary 2. Today's Gospel. In today's Gospel, St. Matthew tells us the story of Jesus and the Beatitudes. Jesus says to us: Blessed be the poor, the reign of God is theirs. Blessed be the sorry, God will make them happy. Blessed be those who hunger for holiness, God will make them holy. Blessed be those who forgive, God will forgive them. Blessed be the peacemakers, they shall be called sons of God. Jesus also says more.

Jesus Shows His Love 17th Lesson 25.2.96 1. Opening Prayer: I said a prayer for you do today. 2. Today's Gospel. Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." Jesus answered, "It is written: `Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: "`He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone Jesus answered him, "It is also written: `Do not put the Lord your God to the test.' Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour ."All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me." Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: `Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only. Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. Love 1st Lesson 29th September 1996 1. Opening Prayer. Our Mary 2. Today's Gospel. In today's Gospel Jesus tells us a story of two sons. One of the sons says no to his father but changes his mind. The other son says yes at once but does not do what he has agreed to do. This story is about us. We find it easy to say yes to God but how much do we try to really do what we have agreed to? 3. The Love we talk about today is a sharing love that God has put into our hearts. It is not a love based on feelings alone or physical displays of affection. It is a love that comes from commitment based on action, based on doing things. What do you think love is? 4. Lets hear what St. Paul says love is and try in our lives to live the love of St. Paul which is the love of Jesus. 5. How can you love as Jesus wants us to love?

Love 2nd Lesson 6th October 1996 1. 2. Opening Prayer. Our Mary Today's Gospel. In today's Gospel Jesus tells us a story of the vine yard owner who did everything for the vineyard and his tenants. But the tenants did not want to repay the vineyard owner what they owed him and they killed his messengers and even his son. This story is about God. Can anyone explain the meaning? It is a story about us and God. About god giving us everything but us not repaying God for his kindness to us. What has God done for you and how do you personally repay Him. 3. Today we talk about love again. This is a very important topic because we know from the Bible that without love we cannot see God. The amount that we love our neighbour is the measure of our love of God. Todays reading is a very practical guide of how we can grow in love. St. Paul tells us that we must control our minds and keep them focused on the best in life. St. Paul tells us our thoughts should move only to the wonderful, the true and honest, the pure, the decent, admirable and the praiseworthy. Try to think good things all the time. God gives us his love free, we do not work for it nor do we earn it. It is never taken back. That what God wants of us. When you meet with God he want to know how you loved. What is your answer?

Laws of Love 3rd Lesson 13th October 1996 1. 2. Opening Prayer. Our Mary Today's Gospel. In today's Gospel Jesus tells us about the Kingdom of God. We should listen carefully as this description of Heaven is given by God Himself. This is an important story not one we should forget. Again the story is really about us. Jesus has invited everyone in this room to share his home in Heaven. But as the story tells us we have to be properly dressed for heaven. Meaning we must put on the clothes of God. What are the clothes of God? The clothes of God are always trying to do our best for Jesus Christ and never giving up loving God and loving neighbour whatever the difficulties. Another description of the clothes of God is given to us by St. Paul in his letter to Ephesians when he talks about the Armour of God. Lets read this now. Today we talk about love again. We have to share our world with everyone. It is very important then that each of us cares for our world and everyone in it. An important element of caring is to make some rules which benefit all. Which rules should we know off by heart ? The 10 Commandments of God. What do you think? Should there be rules for the family? The community? How do you show you belong to your Church community? Do you know your Church community? Now let me tell you the story of a King who loved.

Suffering 5th Lesson 2nd November 1996 1. Opening Prayer, based on suffering.

2. Todays Gospel Jesus warns us about those who preach but do not follow their own preaching. The reason for preaching and teaching is to bring children and grown ups closer to God. If the reasons are different then, this is mans plan not Gods and it is evil and it will fail. As teachers we must always have in mind that this is Gods work and any glory must all go to God otherwise we are robbing God what he is due. 3. Suffering is a mystery in that we do not really no why it happens. Lets examine 3 kinds of suffering: i) ii) iii) 4. Physical Mental Deprivation

The story of Tim and Jane and their alcoholic father. How would you feel? Would you make it difficult for them through gossip? How can you prevent gossip and hurt? Do you care enough to stop it?

5. 6. 7.

It is very important to remember that God does not cause suffering or evil. Man does. What was Jesus example in suffering. How can we gain by suffering. Who is willing to suffer for Jesus? Why?

Help in Relief of Suffering 6th Lesson 9th November 1996 1. 2. Opening Prayer, based on suffering. Todays Gospel, in todays gospel Jesus again tells us about the kingdom of heaven. It is very important that we listen to Jesus descriptions of heaven as we have no excuse when we meet him to say we did not know. The message in todays gospel is that we must always be ready to meet with Jesus. It is not enough to say that we will change for the good tomorrow. We must always be in a state of grace as none of us know the time and the place that God will call us to account for our lives. The truly wise person builds his life from the earliest opportunity on the way of Jesus, the truth of Jesus and the life of Jesus. In talking about suffering our own response, should be one of care, concern and compassion towards those who suffer. In this we have a living example in Jesus. Jesus is expecting all of us to follow his example. In caring for others we are doing the work of Jesus and also loving God. Caring for people means more than just words it means getting involved. In short doing something. What organisations care for people? What are these organisations? Who does the work ?. Do you know about CARITAS? What does it mean? It means Love.

Forgiveness Brings Healing 7th Lesson 16th November 1996 1. 2. 3. Opening Prayer. The story of the unforgiving servant. Lets discuss. Todays Gospel. In todays gospel Jesus tells us about the 5 talents. The meaning is that Our Lord has given each and everyone of us long lasting gifts that He expects us to use. What are these gifts ? To some they are the gift of easily entering into a relationship with Jesus through prayer and reading the bible. To others it is the gift of easily getting along with people. Yet others will be good at various things. God in his infinite wisdom, kindness and generosity has given us all gifts and He wants us to use them. Jesus in to days gospel was angry that the servant with one talent, who wasted his gift in that he did not do anything. Children do not follow this example. Did anyone hurt or wrong you ? What did they do? How did you react ? Should there be any conditions to ones forgiveness ? What do we say in the Lords Prayer about forgiveness ? All close your eyes and think of an experience of a friend upsetting you. How did you feel ? Now think how you got back together ? How did it happen ? Reconciliation with God is like this.

How Communities Form 8th Lesson 24th November 1996 1. Opening Prayer. Hail Mary 2.Today's gospel,is about how God is going to judge us and whether he will let us into heaven. It is very important to know that God loves us so much he wants all of us to go to heaven. But as Jesus tells us in the gospel reading their is a basic criteria we have to meet. What did Jesus explain to us ? He says I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you made me welcome, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and in prison and you visited me. All of those He says this to are worthy of heaven. But to the others he says they did not do any of these things for him and so cannot enter heaven. This is a very important message. What do you think about this ? Where do you stand at this moment in relation to this gospel? 3. Community means fellowship, unity, common purpose. It involves give and take, sharing, acceptance, trust and loyalty. 4. It is not God's plan to save men as isolated individuals but as a people who would know Him and serve Him in holiness. 5. Let's discuss the following. Who is my neighbour? The meaning of Community. Are we a Community in this class? Unity in the Community. The first Christian Community.

The Church Community 9th Lesson 1st December 1996 1. Opening Prayer. Hail Mary 2.Today's gospel, Jesus is reminding us to be attentive to His coming as we do not know the date, the time and the place this will happen. Each of us have our own destiny in Jesus and we must not let Him find us as unworthy. Don't put off being good until tomorrow make sure you live a good life true to Christ everyday. 3. Last week we talked about Community and agreed that it means fellowship, unity, common purpose. It involves give and take, sharing, acceptance, trust and loyalty. 4. This week we are going to consider our community. What do we call our community ? The Church. the church is not a building but people, you and I. Jesus is at the centre of our community and He forms our unity and common purpose. Through our baptism we belong to the community of the church. 5. The church is our link with God. All of us have a place in the church in what we give and in what we receive. Lets read the Acts of the Apostles ( 2 : 37-47 ). 6.How did you come to belong to the Catholic church ? What is the main attraction of the church ? Jesus Christ. Why ? Because of his teachings and example as well as his Good News ? What is the Good News ? Salvation. 7.What do you give to the church ? Praying for others, support by you attendance, giving help, serving as altar boys and girls, reading and bringing the priest the offering. What else ? Your commitment. 8.What does the church give you ? Jesus Christ, hope for heaven, the means to always be happy, the way to make a better world, the love of your brothers and sisters in God who care about you even though they don't know you.

WORSHIP - THE MASS 10th Lesson - 8th December 1996 1. 2. 3. Opening Prayer Todays gospel is about the foretelling of Jesus by John the Baptist. John tells us that he baptises with water but Jesus baptises with the Holy Spirit. What does this mean. Todays lesson is about the Mass. What do you understand by Mass ? Do you remember last week we talked about the community of the church? How we as people come together to praise and worship God. The Mass is the central part of our community. The Mass must be the most important aspect of our community. It brings us altogether to meet Jesus. The Mass is the same as the last supper but instead of the apostles sharing the company of Jesus it is us that share his company. Every time we attend Mass we meet Jesus. When during the Mass does Jesus arrive ? During the consecration. When does this happen ? After the blessing of bread and wine ? What should be my attitude at this part of the Mass ? One of attentiveness asking Jesus to forgive and thanking Him for choosing me to be present at His feast.

4.

5.

6. We should be very careful how we prepare ourselves to receive Jesus in Holy Communion, which is after the consecration another high point of the Mass. We should make sure that we are properly ready to meet Jesus in Holy Communion and we should have something to say to Him. What do you say to Him ? You could say dear Jesus you do so much for me what can I do for you ? After receiving Jesus you ought to thank Him again that He made it possible for you to share His celebration.

Prominent Christians Saints 11th Lesson 15th December 1996 1. Opening Prayer.

2. In todays gospel John the Baptist tells us about the coming of Jesus. This gospel is part of Advent which is a time we wait for the coming of Jesus Christ. In Johns words we can appreciate how great a coming this is going to be. John who is a Saint tells us that he nothing compared to Jesus. 3. Who can be a Saint? Saints are wonderful examples of loving God and Neighbour. Saints are ordinary people who serve God. Saints are loyal to their faith, they never give up trying and they are very happy to tell the story of Jesus Christ. We can tell that they are men and women who read the life of Christ. Are any of these things really difficult to do ? They are only difficult without the help of God. 4. Saints seek out the road to God. You can say that he who sleeps on the way to God dies.

5. Lets talk about the story of some of the saints we know. St. Therese of Lisieux and the little way to heaven. St. Joseph the man who brought up Jesus. St. John Bosco the priest for children. Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

Mary - The Rosary 12 th Lesson 12th January 1997 1. 2. Opening Prayer. The Baptism of the Lord

3. Todays Gospel describes the Baptism of Jesus Christ by St. John the Baptist. This was at the start of Jesus mission as our Saviour. The gospel passage says you are my beloved Son. On you my favours rests. In our own baptism we are chosen by God, we are not chosen on our own merit. We have done nothing to deserve Gods favour. It is a very special privilege that God has chosen us especially to be his children. We must respond positively to this. 4. What do we know about Mary ? What qualities do mothers have ? Being a mother means thinking about others instead of ourselves. In Mary we have a wonderful example of thinking about others especially us. 5. Lets read St. Lukes gospel on Mary (St. Luke 1:26-45)

6. We know about Mary from the bible in the stories of the Annunciation, the Visitation, the flight into Egypt, Jesus lost in the Temple, the Wedding at Cana. 7. A very important devotion to Mary is the Rosary. When we pray the rosary we should think about the Joyful Mysteries, the Sorrowful Mysteries and the Glorious Mysteries. Note we Pray the Rosary not say the Rosary. 8. What order of pray is there to the Rosary?

The me I see. Made in Gods Image 14 th Lesson 19th January 1997 1. Opening Prayer.

2. Todays Gospel tells us that after John The Baptists arrest Jesus went to Galilee and proclaimed the Good News of God. Jesus also recruited his first disciples Peter, Andrew, James and John. He told them that they would fish for men instead of fish. 3 The disciples responded generously to God. They joined Jesus without any conditions. Many continue to do this and Christ is the centre of their lives. He will exert a very strong and growing attraction on their souls. Jesus seeks us out from the midst of our daily lives. What qualities did the first disciples have that attracted Jesus interest? They are men who are tough and adaptable, used to a simple way of life and hard work. 5. Do you remember our last lesson about the Rosary?

6. We know that we are made in the image of God. We have been made as individuals and each one of us is different. This is Gods greatness that shows itself in us. We are the product of God. There are 2 parts to us, our body and our soul. 7. Most of what we see is on the outside. But the really important part of us is our soul which onlyGod can see. When Jesus looks at our soul He can whether we love Him or not. He can also see whether we are generous, kind, thoughtful or whether we are really bullies who torment others and make them feel uncomfortable.

The Me Inside 16th Lesson 15th February 1997 1. Opening Prayer.

2. Todays Gospel tells of Jesus spending 40 days in the wilderness where he was tempted by Satan but the angels looked after Him. After this and after John The Baptists arrest Jesus went to Galilee and proclaimed the Good News of God. 3. Why do you think Jesus let Himself be tempted by the devil? Was it to give us a good example of overcoming evil with holiness? 4. What is the good news that Jesus preached? Was it Salvation? Why did Jesus preach the good news? Was it so that we could join Him in His heavenly kingdom? Are we responding to Christ heroic call? 5. We need to discuss and learn about ourselves. In the first topic a couple of weeks ago we covered The Me I see. We know that we are made in the image of God and that everyone is different according to Gods wish. In other words we are special in the eyes of God. 6. We also know that God gave us many gifts called talents and abilities. In the bible story of the five talents we know that God gave us these talents to use for the common good of all. 7, Today we are going to discuss the me inside. The me outside, we can easily see, but it is the me inside that is more important to know. It would be very sad for us if we did not try to see the me inside. 8. The me inside makes us a whole person, it determines whether we are good or evil, whether we are honest or dishonest or whether we are cruel or kind. 9. Everybody thinks they are good, but we have to examine ourselves to find out. We have to ask ourselves questions. 10. The me inside is about feelings and emotions. It is about the way we think and act. We have to learn to control our bad habits. 11. In the story of the Unforgiving Servant we are presented with many types of feelings. Lets read it and see. What feelings can you identify? 12. Ask yourself some questions, like What makes me happy? What makes me sad? I like the way I am. What bothers me? What hurts my feelings? How do I react if someone is kind to me? How do I react if someone is nasty to me? 13. God. We need to understand ourselves so that we can correct those faults which separate us from

My Relationship with Others 17th Lesson 22nd February 1997 1. 2. Opening Prayer. Todays Gospel is the story of the Transfiguration. Its worth noting that only Peter, James and John were with Jesus when his clothes became dazzlingly white and He met with Moses and Elijah. Both Moses and Elijah had been dead for more than a thousand years when this happened. This is a very special story and we can all think about what it would have been like to be in the place of the Apostles seeing all these things. What would it be like for you? Last week we covered the me inside. This was about knowing ourselves and our feelings. This is very important to be saved by Jesus. By knowing ourselves we have the opportunity for correction. With Gods help we can overcome anything that is offending, such as temper, rudeness, greed, cruelty, bad manners and laziness. 4. 5. 6. 7. Feelings are very important for our relationship with others. Name some important feelings? Happiness, sadness, compassion, anger, generosity, humility, holiness and love. What feelings help us and help others? What feelings do harm? What feeling do we see in our Mother or our doctor? Lets read the about Jesus first miracle. The Miracle of Cana. What feelings can we identify with Mary? What feelings can we identify with Jesus? The feelings we can see in the story are compassion, respect, caring, faith, trust, happiness. We can see from Jesus example in the bible that He was never boastful, he did not want praise. He wanted all the praise due to go to Our Heavenly Father. The main lesson we learn is that we all need each other. More than that we need God, because without God we cannot do anything that is good. God has given us so many things for us to use for the common good. All of our talents, abilities, feelings are meant to produce good results for Jesus. We have to teach those who dont know, the life of Jesus Christ. We have to try to save them from ignorance which separates them from God. We also have to support each other in prayer. You should all be regularly praying for each other in this class although you might not know each well. We all need prayer I need your prayers and I always pray for you.

RITES OF PASSAGE Life, Birth, Sacraments of Initiation 18th Lesson 1st March 1997 1. Opening Prayer.

2. Todays first reading is the 10 commandments. Do you remember them? This is followed by the gospel of John which describes Jesus driving out of the temple all those people who were spoiling it and turning it into a market instead of the House of God. They were also putting others off of worship. This is very serious and we must not be guilty of this. 3. Last week we covered the our relationships with others. How it is better to make others happy not sad. You have to remember that Jesus will one day ask you , have you made it easy or hard for those around you to get to heaven? We must all be able to answer this question positively. 4. In todays lesson we will learn that we have only one life. We are put on earth, created by God, given life for a special purpose. Our life on earth is temporary. Our real home is heaven, but we must find our way there. 5. 6. 7. We have always to remember that our life is a gift from God not to be wasted. In the book of Genesis 1:1 and 2:3 we know the origins of life. Why did God make you? What is the purpose of life? Loving God and loving Neighbour.

8. Some important steps in our life are our Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation. It is through receiving these sacraments that we really come to know and love God. 9. What is Baptism? It is a sacrament whereby we are cleansed and made pure in the eyes of God. We have to receive this sacrament to free us from original sin. 10. Another important step is receiving Holy Communion. Here by a mystery we cannot explain we have the opportunity to receive the body and blood of Christ. In other words Christ is present and with us in Holy Communion. We should be very attentive to this less we displease Christ. 11. A third important step for us is the sacrament of Confirmation. In receiving this sacrament we accept Christ as being at the centre of our lives and we receive the Holy Spirit. In other words we commit ourselves to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Through the power of the Holy Spirit we are able to do many good things that we otherwise could not.

RITES OF PASSAGE Growth in Love,.My Response, New Life,.Eternal Life 20th Lesson 29th March 1997 1. Opening Prayer. 2. In todays gospel we can learn many things. Firstly after Jesus was killed the apostles were very scared. Jesus came to see them and comfort them in their fear. Jesus had overcome death and the apostles were very happy about this. Jesus said a very important thing to them Peace be with you these are the first words used by Jesus after rising from death. He also told them that he wanted them to tell everyone about the Good News. To help them with this task he sent the Holy Spirit. The sacrament of Penance was initiated in this gospel passage when Jesus tells them if you forgive sins they are forgiven. We also have the story of the doubting Thomas in this gospel. Again from Thomas doubt we learn a lot when Thomas responds to Jesus by saying My Lord and my God. We should repeat this every time we go to Mass during the consecration of bread and wine. 3. In the last couple of classes we have considered the sacraments and how they are gifts from God which provide us with spiritual food and strength. They enable us to do special things. However in order to do these things we have to RESPOND to God. Respond means to answer, to make an effort. The best example there is of responding to God is Jesus. We must study his life and try to imitate it. How do you normally respond to God ? By saying no to evil and saying yes to good ? By using the gifts and talents that God has given me for the benefit of the community. By doing things that are good when I feel too lazy to. 4. Lets listen to the story of David who got to love Jesus very much. 6. In this story we here about another David called King David who wrote many Psalms. Lets read Psalm 23. Both the Davids in this story are examples of responding to God. 7. Just as there is life so there is death. The you now will fade away, but the real you will live forever. We can say that life is a mystery, it is also a joy and a beautiful gift from God we should treasure. We must not waste our lives but be constantly looking for things to do for Our Lord Jesus Christ. What can you do for Jesus ? 8. All life belongs to God that is why no one should destroy his life or anybodies life including life in the womb. 9. We know that when we pass from this life we shall enter paradise as Jesus tells us in the gospel of St. John My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later." "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. In the book of Wisdom it says But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died and their departure was thought to be an affliction and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. (Wisdom 3:1-9).

QUALITIES OF LIFE......TRUTH Moral Growth 21st Lesson 13th April 1997 1. Opening Prayer.

2. In todays gospel Jesus visits his disciples after his crucifixion. We should think about how caring Jesus was in coming back from his death so quickly to be with his disciples. Jesus never wasted any time in being with them. Why do you think Jesus visited them so quickly? Because he cared for them and did not want them to bear the sadness of his going. He also wanted to give them the assurance that they needed to preach the Good News of life after death based on his own experience of coming back after death. 3. Todays lesson is about Truth. Do you know what truth means? It means being ourselves and not trying to pretend. It means being honest, even in difficult circumstances, when telling the truth will mean punishment or loss of face. 4. Our attitude to truth is very important because it determines who we really are and whether others can rely on us. Would you rely on someone you know to be untruthful? Is it difficult to know whether someone is an untruthful person? What sort of things might make us lie? In comparison to our relationship with God are these things important? 5. 6. What does Jesus say about truth? Lets read John 18:1-11. Are we expected to tell the truth even if it makes things difficult for us?

Worship The Mass and the Eucharist 23rd Lesson 27th April 1997 1. Opening Prayer.

2. In todays gospel Jesus tells us that he is the Vine and we are living parts of the Vine. We cannot grow inside unless we are attached to Jesus. 3. Todays lesson is about Worship. Why do we worship? When we really know about God and all He does for us, we want to do something special. We call this worship and the Mass is our main form of worship. 4. We can say that our greatest form of worship is the Mass. We can only feel this if we are open to the Holy Spirit. We open ourselves to the Holy Spirit through prayer and receiving the sacraments of Penance and Holy communion regularly. 5. We should consider the main aspects of the Mass. Do you know what happens at Mass. During Mass we start by asking god to forgive our sins when we make the act of confession. We also praise God in the Gloria. We listen to the word of God in the readings and Gospel. We should listen as though Jesus himself were reading. 6. During the consecration we should be very attentive because the bread and wine are by some miracle changed into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. In the consecration and receiving Holy Communion we are as close to heaven as we shall ever be in this world. We should let this feeling pass us by due to in-attentiveness. 7. St. Augustine says that the most important thing is that in receiving Holy Communion we should be very careful to thank God. We do not want to be like the lepers that Jesus cured and forgot to say thank you, that would offend Jesus who we should love so much.
