Tourist Routes
Basic Route

The Basic Route leads you around the most important sites and viewpoints of Hasankeyf. It is linked to the advanced routes, so you can easily expand your walk through the city. If you arrive with a tourist bus, your first stop is the parking space for buses in the north of the bridge. From that point, you can either cross the bridge and get directly into the old city or you can first take a walk along the river enjoying a very beautyful view and then cross the river by boat. If you arrive by private transport it is recommended to park your car at one of the labeled parking spaces and join the route there.

Once you entered the old city you have various possibilities to get around as the map shows. At important viewpoints you also find labels with information and historical background about the site. A walk along the river is recommended.

Tourist Routes
Culture Route

The Culture Route is split into three different parts which are always linked to the Basic Route. For Culture Route 1 it is easiest to stop your vehicle on your way into the city, which is easy for those of you who arrive with a tourist bus. Take a walk around the excavation site and also visit the tomb. After that you can either go back to your vehicle or move along to the Hammam and continue your walk to the floating platform where you can enter the Basic Route. It is not recommended to leave your car at the street for a longer time. Culture Route 2 leads you up to the citadel, the most ancient part of Hasankeyf. For more historical information please see the history part of this book.

Tourist Routes
Nature Route

The Nature Route is recommended if you want to do some mountaineering and if you are not afraid of long walks. Along both of the Nature Routes you will see a lot of cave houses and step deeper into the history of the ancient city. For the Nature Route, it is recommended to hire a guide. If you only want to do one of the routes, the walk to the watersource is definitely worth it.

Tourist Routes
Old Village Circuit

Old village in Hasankeyf is very important place for people who live and visit there, because of its value for history, location, uses, etc. Although many families have been moved to another places, rest of them are still living in old village, as well as working, staying there and enjoying their lives with Tea! If somebody comes to Hasankeyf, they will visit old village in the first place. It is connected to other tourist circuits. Therefore, here could be the starting point, hasankeyf to look around. But first of all, the most important thing at this point is that they just go through this place to visit an archaeological site*, including palace. But there are so many attractive and enjoyable places in this area which have not been discovered yet.

Tourist Routes
Old Village Circuit

Old village of Hasankeyf is located in the middle of whole city area and just next to the river. At there, there are commercial activities of the Hasankeyf citizen and visitors and interaction between them, which makes Hasankeyf not to seem like archaeological city but living city. Therefore, we are planning to make tourists stay and look around there. For that, we propose the first tourist circuit in old village. People can look around this area along the route we suggested and could see many old monuments such as minaret, mosque, bridge, church and so on. Also, they can experience how people live here, what they usually do, what they have for their meal, etc. It could be cultural experiences from normal daily lives. We are going to develop its potentials and plan programs for visitors. People can participate in this programs, serve visitors and earn from them. It could be first investment for economy and future of Hasankeyf.

* Archaeological site: Its blocked by city goverment, because of its safety.

Tourist Facilities
Riverside Improvement

The existing riverfront is in a really poor condition. It is used as a dump for the restaurants which are integrated into the city wall; pipes lead their wastewater into the river. There is no connection between the two ends of the riverfront and most of the accesses to the riverfront are in an ugly condition, closed, or kept as secrets. Since the slide there is also a new fence under construction, which now, might already close the access to the old beach, what also demands a new solution. A new beach is already prepared, but it needs to be cleaned and its access needs to be improved to raise acceptance for this area. But in total the site contains a high potential and little changes might improve the area a lot.

Tourist Facilities
Riverside Improvement

Potential examples are seen in the panoramic views along the Tigris with the cliffs and caves, as well as the connection of the two beaches which should vary in their meaning. While the western beach can only be built up in summer, the eastern beach for example could be built up in spring during the main season, because of the higher level above the river. The new car parking will also connect this beach much better to local visitors, while the other beach is more attractive for day tourists coming with coaches. Finally at the new beach there could take place movie screenings or little events. The accessibility was already mentioned and plays an important role in the concept. The access to the riverfront has to be easy and obvious to foreigners so several possible accessing points have been spotted. Some of them already exist, but are hidden, others would need new stairs or paths and a bit of design and cleaning, what could easily be done. Finally the new riverfront is integrated in and linked to the tourist circuits and the other tourist attractions. An improvement of this existing situation would definitely invite tourists to extend their stay for a couple of hours or days, which would have an influence on the local economy.

Tourist Facilities
Tigris Caf

Within the improvement of the riverfront there are two examples shown how the area could be improved. The first uses one of the access points to propose a caf at a small square next to the old bridge which isnt used yet and whose entrance is hidden and a local secret at the moment. The place already has a high quality, due to its setting next to the old bridge and would only need a bit of fixing and cleaning, a couple of benches and maybe some shading elements like canopies. That way it could easily become the perfect place for a caf where tourists can sit down, rest a bit and enjoy the ancient atmosphere of the old artefacts surrounding them as well as the beautiful scenery of the Tigris, while they are having tea, served by the local caf owner who has a new possibility of earning some money.

Tourist Facilities
Hasankeyf beach

Another example which would also need only small effort is the improvement of the accessibility to the new location of the restaurants. The accessibility is a very important issue to make this place successful. Also the appearance needs a big change to attract people. The litter has to be removed. Stairs can easily be built, using local resources and skills. Also terraces can be built, where a few trees could offer shading to sit underneath and simply relax. Those terraces could also be used as seating areas for events, held at the beach like cinema screenings, which could even take place in winter, so that it could also become a place to be for the inhabitants of Hasankeyf.

EVALUACIONES

Evaluation

Ilisu Dam (Based on governmental aims and weed report 2005)

+ Energy production + Shutting down supply routes of kurdish terrorists and drowning their weapon storage which are considered to be hidden in some of the caves + more independence from oil imports + economic improvement (not noticeable yet) + Reduction of unemployment + prevention of droughts and floods

which is an obvious infringement of international law

Cultural destruction: - innumerable historical sites already have been and will be destroyed by the floods of the GAP dams - destruction of kurdish culture and traditions Ecological impact: - loss of forest areas and other rare habitats, causing a loss of rare species - the transformation of the Tigris from an flowing water into a standing water will also cause an extinction of fishes and other water bound species - this also causes an interruption of transportation of sediments, which causes a sludge accumulation at the dam and a reduction of its productivity - change of the rivers ecology and reduction of the water quality (lack of oxygen, nutrient spill-over) - loss of agricultural land, salinization of newly agricultural used land - impacts along the lower part of the river as well - increase of causative organisms (Malaria, Schistosomiasis, Leishmaniasis) - increase of the risk of earthquakes - no sufficient compensatory actions Geo-stratecical impacts:

Resettlement planning: - no real social - economic investigations (the project managers dont even know the approximate number of effected people) - no separate investigation concerning women issues - no sufficient information of the local population - no consultations - open land tenures, many cant prove their land tenures - evictions through landlords and the military - no possibilities for affected people to exhibit their concerns, pleas nor interests - no adequate compensation - if compensation is paid, than only for men, women are excluded - graveyards are flooded, not replaced - many people already have been evicted, they gather in and overflow the slums of local cities, where they are exposed to poverty, unemployment, bad hygienically conditions and malnourishment, what finally lead to diseases and social psychological problems, what is manifested in a high suicide rate, especially for women) - so equal life conditions after the resettlement cant be guarantied,

- increase of extortion potential towards Syria and Iraq - no consoltations of the abutting and effected nations, what also is an infringement of international law

Evaluation

New Hasankeyf (Raphael Dietz)

- financial issues (e.g. New Ilisu: The inhabitants get 20.000 TL for theri old buildings, but have to pay 70.000 TL for the new ones. The + Improvement of Infrastructure (canalisation, public buildings) question how they shall rise the divergent 50.000 TL with an monthly + Improvement of leisure and community facilities (Football pitch) income around 100 TL isnt answered yet) + Relocation of the Highway makes the town calmer and the traffic - no participation for the design of the houses safer - no efford towards the local habit of self-construction - loss of identity into anonymity through mass production of the build- on the other hand the loss of the heavy vehicles passing Hasnakeyfs ings can cause a loss of income for the owners of the shops; momentary - only symbolic realization of the private courtyards, which doesnt althis traffics brings a lot of money to the town low an adequate livestock breeding - huge area, much bigger than the existing town - loss of private free space (Gardens etc.) - huge public spaces without real functions, whats going to happen with those spaces - loss of the accustomed environment and the historically grown struc- Public buildings: tures an surrounding - no building structure visible yet (buildings, heights, gardens...) + better quality + bigger (but is there the need for more square meters?) - intimidating architecture of power - loss of perceptibility of the different functions through the uniform apHousing: pearance + better quality of built structure + more space in the buildings, more rooms + possibly better connection to infrastructure supply Archeological park: Masterplan: - but already realized projects have shown that it is not sure, that the buildings will be completely finished or fully connected to infrastructure supply - no animal facilities considered - Apartment buildings dont fit into the rural region and the village like structure of life + conservation of at least some of the historical sites - uprooting of the historical sites from their natural environment - inadequate planning (many sites arent able to be removed, so the list of sites to be saved gets smaller and smaller) - questionable attractiveness for tourist, considering local alternatives

- attractiveness for water activities is also questionable, regarding the decrease of water quality - no obvious plan for the citadel (except of some boat connections) - no guarantee, that Hasankeyfs inhabitants will be the ones who benefit from the new facilities and possible tourism - loss of the improvised self made character of the momentary situation in favour for a new commercial tourism, this might leave the inhabitants behind - no investigations concerning the effects of the impounded water to the rock underneath the citadel- considering the shrinking list of historical sites that can be saved, it doesnt seem guaranteed, that the historical park is really going to be realized - no investigations concerning the effects of the impounded water to the rock underneath the citadel
