MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ArchitecturAl engineering lecco cAmpus

Presentation

The International Master of Science (Laurea Magistrale) programme in Architectural Engineering is offered by the VI School of Building Engineering and Architecture (Facolt di Ingegneria Edile-Architettura) of the Politecnico di Milano. It is totally taught in English for each of the two years, with the possibility, during the second year, to follow optional courses in Italian. The programme is hosted at Lecco, a town at one-hour train from Milano on Lake Como, surrounded by mountains. Italy surely has a long, worldwide recognized tradition in the architectural and building sector. Our country can boast designers and manufacturers celebrated for the quality of their works in the residential and service building sector. Foreign students with a different cultural background (especially architects and civil or building engineers) could be attracted by courses preparing them through specific design and product approaches as well as state-of-the-art technologies. Beyond such features which are shared by the European tradition, the Italian building tradition and culture are celebrated worldwide. Italian history of Architecture and building techniques, as well as the history, the image and the identity of cities, give the building culture of our country an unreachable set of positive values, deemed to be highly attractive for young students coming from a different culture. This means that a good M.Sc. programme for foreign students must pay specific attention to supply them with this kind of historical and cultural erudition, without affecting their present highly technical education, by bridging their gap with the Italian students, who already received it in the previous years of study. Among the others, key subjects are the following: Architectural Design Architectural History Building Durability Building Materials Maintenance Management Building Physics Building Services System Design Conservation Project management Refurbishment Structural Design Structural rehabilitation and consolidation Technological Design Urban Design Italian language and culture

Mission and goals

This M.Sc. programme is intended to meet these goals: to prepare foreign architectural and engineering students to compete on international markets in the field of designing, production and the building sector innovation technology, through a cultural and educational background rooted in the Italian building tradition. In particular, the goal is to train a professional engineer able to effectively operate, within the competences set by the law, in different fields such as: the design of complex building systems, considering technological, structural, environmental aspects, together with urban and architectural design concerns the concern to issues such as indoor comfort, materials and components durability, energy, safety and environmental impact the development of the building process, in its operative, economic and managerial aspects the management of technological and production processes related to the building sector (new and existing buildings) the innovation related to building technology the testing and quality controls of products and buildings.
