Volume 12, Number 29

Revelation 22:20 Cartoons have regularly carried the image of a man carrying a sign that has the words, The End Is Near boldly written on it. I tend to want to ask, The end of what is near? I mean, I have been at the railroad crossing and the end of the train is never as near as you want it to be. Really, the guy that is always claiming that the end is near has no real idea about it. He just wants to have a message, and he wants to be heard. For many years we have heard the cries of a possible Armageddon; the great conflict that will signal the end of civilization as we have known it, and usher the beginning of the new age. In some belief systems that great conflagration will bring about the millennium (1000 years), the reign of Christ on earth. Of course there are several variation of the millennial philosophy. The two things that they have in common are that there will be a reign of Christ on earth, and that it will last 1000 years. Many of the ideas that are presented in millennial philosophies are drawn from the Revelation. The problem with many of the ideas is that they are not based in a sound approach to the scriptures. As with any progression of understanding, a conclusion that begins with a poor premise will generally arrive at the wrong answer. Distortions of Biblical teaching have always gone in the wrong direction. I mean that the person doing the distorted or false teaching approaches the Bible in the wrong way. That person may have some sort of agenda. Maybe there is a point of conviction that is already held. Maybe the person just wants to have some self-confirmation. Grasping every implication and application of the books of the Bible is beyond us. Still, understanding the concepts in principle can in almost every case provide the information we need to determine a good application. This is especially true of the book of Revelation. It is not a book to frighten us. It is not to be ignored. It gives us a beautiful picture of the love of the Lord for His church, and the victory He provides. Hear what the spirit says to the churches (Revelation 2:7). Russ
