A link between Randstad and Delta Ijsselmonde is placed between the Randstand and the Zeeland Delta, giving it potential to serve as leverage between these bigger clusters. The western part of Ijsselmonde is the entrance to the Rotterdam harbor. This area plays an active roll in the industrial economy of Rotterdam. But what will happen when the industry will move out of this area? Our strategy is to introduce a strong new and contemporary identity for the western part of Ijsselmonde. Using the created space by the movement of the port area towards the Maasvlakte II and considering the globally increasing trend of clean energy production, we introduce a new program for the island and the Zeeland Delta. Knowledge corridor towards the future We propose a knowledge corridor on the island of Ijsselmonde. Rotterdam already has plans for a new climate campus in the city harbor along the Maas, which will house a branch of research and innovation for water management and clean energy. We propose to plan this campus on the industrial harbor

on the island instead. This campus, together with the RDM campus and two new education facilities we planned, will function as the knowledge cluster of this corridor. The program in the corridor also contains student housing, business parks, culture and leisure, and a science park. This corridor will be a place where innovation within the sustainibility branch is concentrated, so it will become a nationally renowned location. Knowledge - Production - Implementation The energy cycle we appoint consists out of three phases which are planned in clusters on the island and in the Zeeland Delta. As explained the knowledge cluster is planned on the island. Here the ideas of innovative technology are born. These ideas can be tested and put into practice within the knowledge corridor. The production of takes place in the cluster of the MBO campus and manufacturing companies. After the manufacturing the products, they are transported to Zeeland, where they can be implemented in the designated energy clusters.

The new station is the entrance of the knowledge corridor for a big number of users. This new train stop connects the area on a national scale. Therefore this intervention area should function as an important node in our plan. We propose two squares and a pedestrian bridge which connects these two. The station has to accessible easily for all the users of the knowledge corridor. A problem in this accessibility is the highway 65which cuts through the area. To connect 25 45 the souther part of the area to the station, a bridge for slow traffic is planned. This bridge will also function as a moment of publicity to the frequent used highway. Therefore the bridge is not only a connector but also an eye catcher and a landmark for the area. On both sides at the end of the bridge there are two squares. The squares should function as showcases for all the different companies and campuses in the area. On this square they can show their identity to the larger public.

Aimed effect: Creating the base for the network and gather spot on the peninsula. Using the space to regard energy demand and showing local developments.

Enjoy the local scale for a regional perspective. Creating a large strategic plan for the western Ijsselmonde area implies that a coherent public transport structure should be realized. This area consists of a diverse program with containing education, business, production and implementation. This ensures a large mixture of people and perspective. The infrastructure has a channeling function on a physical level but also on the perception perspective. Therefore each stop within the public transport structure must have a clear identity, made visible in form and/or material. The clear identity is created to raise the perception of interaction with the surrounding area. The port area itself, as a vantage point, has already an excellent working infrastructure. Which can serves also as a basis for the new structure. Where the foundation of the existing train structure is transformed into a base for the new shuttle-bus system. The main depot in the middle of the peninsula between de Eemhaven and Waalhaven forms the intervention location. Positioned in the heart of the peninsula constitutes it can be the vantage point for future development.

Our local vision states that Knowledge Corridor should partly be integrated with Hoogvliet which is a satellite town of Rotterdam mainly providing workers for the harbor industry. In our vision, this industry will make room for clean energy industry. The city will benefit from this Knowledge Corridor in different ways, such as social facilities, job opportunities and a better living environment. Therefore, the connection between Hoogvliet, green campus and business park becomes an important issue. With the concept of cluster of sharing facilities, there are different facilities in three areas, which will make social movement in between. Bike route is a tool to make this connection as well. Considering the physical border of existing infrastructure, a bridge for bike and pedestrian is planed for this intervention area. The landscape is another tool to make connection over physical border of infrastructure. This ecologic landscape will start from this Eco-Cross to extend into Hoogvliet, so that there will be a green axis going through the whole Hoogvliet.
