Measurement and Management Technology (MMT) 1.5 Savings Calculation Policy and Practice
START-UP OF MMT SYSTEM: Upon start up of the MMT system at a data center location, the data center and RESO teams need to: a. Rebalance the cooling delivering to eliminate hot and cold spots. b. Complete plugging of floor holes and installation of blanking plates to eliminate cross flows and short circuits. c. Optimize CRAC utilization (as defined by MMT) by turning off underutilized CRAC units, rebalancing the floor, and increasing the utilization on the remaining units. d. Readjust room temperature and begin raising to the ASHRAE A2 Temperature and Humidity Standard. e. Where appropriate, change the chiller water settings to optimize chiller efficiency at the new raised floor operating temperature. RECORDING MMT SYSTEM SAVINGS: MMT 1.5 provides a tool which aggregates all best practices implementations (tile placement, VFD speed, CRAC unit shut downs, blanking plates, other air flow management techniques, etc.) into a cause and effect relationship. Sites will no longer need to document these savings individually, i.e., installed 45 blanking plates, established hot / cold aisle arrangement, etc. NOTE: PUE metrics are not measurements of savings, but rather provides an indication of raised floor efficiency. The MMT will track energy savings automatically. For the first 12 months of operation, the team can load the calculated MMT energy savings value directly into UA each month as follows:
Monthly updates of the Measures' kWh savings directly from MMT 1.5. RESO site team (IBMers and / or Full Service Vendor) to retain kWh savings in PDF extract for audit purposes, and ensure the appropriate Measures Notes are provided. Sites will need to document the parameters or settings and the specific actions energy conservation activities taken in the raised floor space each month (i.e. installed blanking plates, raised floor temperature 1oF, etc.) in the Measures' Notes. Initially, the monthly kWh savings information will have to be manually calculated from MMT 1.5 PDF extract. Eventually, the MMT 1.5 tool will be improved to provide the savings data in monthly buckets.
Measurement and Management Technology (MMT) 1.5 Savings Calculation Policy and Practice
MMT 1.5 manages the savings calculation by raised floor or project (MMT 1.5 terminology). For sites with more than one MMT 1.5 installation, it is possible to have more than one Measure. Please ensure the Measure's name provides distinctive information i.e., Machine Room D MMT 1.5 Savings, Bldg 201 RF MMT savings, etc. since there may be more than one Measure per site. Example: There are 3 raised floors in Southbury, CT, with the possibility of 3 different sets of parameters as well. Raised floor areas can utilize the MMT system to track energy savings in the raised floor area. It is expected that once the best practices and higher ASHRAE T&H standards have been implemented the reported savings will be significantly reduced. A new MMT UA project entry should be started for each calendar year to track these savings. Financial savings to be calculated in Measures by one of the two approved methods, subject to our verification processes. It is highly recommend that the sites use the Measure's Apply Rate Schedule feature. NOTE: Estimated financial savings from MMT 1.5 will not be used. Apply funding source code of "BU 20XX Chairman's Initiative", where BU is the business unit's acronym (generally ITD or BCRS) and implementation year (i.e., 2011, 2012, 2013, etc.) [year the MMT project was started in Measures]. No savings can be attributed to 2010 or earlier. 2010 is closed / complete for reporting purposes. MMT 1.5 kWh savings documentation will start with an implementation date of January 2011 or later, depending on when the MMT 1.5 was fully deployed. Any deployments before January 2011 will have an effective start date of January 2011 and run 12 consecutive months. MMT 1.5 can have savings from one project in 2011 and some carryover into 2012 (project was implemented in February 2011 or later).
After the first 12 months, it will be necessary to reduce the energy savings reported in MMT by the value of the reported savings in the same month (as the reporting month) from the previous year. For example, if the MMT system was first used to report savings in January of 2012, in January of 2013 you will need to take the reported MMT savings value and subtract the reported value from January of 2012. This will enable the MMT reported energy savings to maintain the 12 month duration required by our energy conservation business process.
As updates are implemented to the MMT system, such as algorithms to implement direct control of CRAC airflow based on raised floor thermal profiles, additional savings will be tracked through MMT.
