MY NEIGHBORS KISS

pdf to jpg CHAPTER 1

Drake stood at the open door to the shop for a long moment, watching as Jade stacked cans. She was intent on her work, straining on her tiptoes, completely oblivious to his presenceor the world around her. It made him smile. Obviously she was bored, stacking the cans far too high. If a child should happen to bump the bin, her whole display would come toppling down, most likely on the childs head.

Dismissing all thoughts of the hypothetical child, Drake wet his lips, admiring his unsuspecting neighbors contour. Shed grown up while he was away. Now she was all womanly with rounded curves, her long auburn hair gleaming to distraction in the sunlight. He found it hard to believe the inviting vision before him was the wild tomboy hed wrestled with, dousing with snowballs in winters past. Suddenly, to his discomfort, he found himself wanting to wrestle with her in a completely different way not in the snow, but his bed. The desire made him cock an eyebrow. Something new was in the mix.

Youre stacking those too high, Drake said at last, nally making his presence known.

Jade whipped around, in her surprise to see him, disturbing the display. Drake grabbed her by the shoulder, pulling her out of harms way just as the whole tower of cans toppled to the ground.

Look what you made me do! Jade grumbled, giving her friend a playful swat across his chest. Then, liking the feel of where her hand had just been, she coquettishly put it back, letting it rest there for a moment.

She raised her eyebrows. My goodness, that university is making a man out of you, after all.

Drake grinned, playfully posing his hands as though preparing to follow her gesture. Shall I reciprocate? I assure you, Id be delighted to reciprocate..

He waited, uncertain if Jade had grown in mind as well as body. He remembered all too well irtatious remarks deemed in her direction sending her bolting like a skittish colt. She had always been that way, brazenly coquettishas long as the exchange was all one sided.

His lips quirked into an amused smile. As he expected, a ush crept up her neck and into her lovely cheeks.

Jade quickly snatched her hand away. I heard you would be coming, she announced, trying to hide the disconcertment his teasing produced by kneeling to pick up the mess of cans. How is your father? Mother goes to see him practically everydayand I try to see him when I can but How is he?

Drake shrugged wearily. Hes dying.

Jade nodded. She knew that. Once having said it, she realized it was a stupid question. Its just that seeing Drake againhim being even more handsome and virile than she rememberedturned her brain to mush. And her heart was distracting as well, doing some sort of uttery dance. She just knew it was going to leap right out of her chest.

Im sorry, she whispered.

Drake knelt down beside her. I know, he murmured, his warm breath tickling the side of her neck.

Being so near him sent tingles through Jades body. He was so close. He could probably hear her heart. Why, it was beating so loud probably the whole town could hear it. Jade tried to distance herself from him by moving away. But he simply followed, enjoying being near her. She smelled goodlike apples and maple syrup.

Jade swallowed, trying to gain composure. His fathers dying, she scolded. Concentrate on that.

Is Hal able to

Jade stopped in mid-sentence as Drakes hand accidentally brushed against hers as they reached for the same can. She jumped away as though shed been scorched by re.

At that moment Diana Price came waltzing into the store. Although Jade loathed Diana, she could be nothing but thankful for the distraction.

There you are. Diana wiggled a nger at Drake. Ive been looking all over for you.

Sorry. He gave a furtive glance at Jade, then rose to his feet. You know my neighbor Jade, dont you Diana?

Of course. Diana gave an obligatory glance in Jades direction, then turned her attention back to Drake. I wanted you to help me nd a dress for the party, she pouted.

Yeah. Well, Drake cleared his throat, Im sure you did a splendid job without me.

I did, she acquiesced. But you were very naughty to leave me.

Drake gestured towards Jade. I just wanted to pop by and say hi to my old friend, here. I havent seen her in over a year. Shes getting all grown up dont you think?

Diana gave Jade a second glance, then narrowed her eyes, not seeming at all pleased. Yes. Little Jade is growing up.

I am in the room, Jade announced, as they were both discussing her as though she was elsewhere.

Drake grinned. I know. You smell good.

Diana made a tisking noise.

All right, Diana said crisply, locking her arm through Drakes. Were leaving now, and believe me, you are going to pay dearly for that remark.

Oh, I have no doubts. Drake stuffed his hands in his pockets, then winked at Jade. See ya, kid.

***

See ya kid, Jade muttered all the way home from the store. See ya, kid?! Who was Drake Edwards to call her a kid? He was a mere ve years older than she wasand if anything he was the kid.

She smiled, remembering last winter how they had played in the snow together. Drake was abundantly fun. The only fun full grown man that she knew ofall though, she had to admit, she didnt know that many men. Not single ones, anyway. And the few that that she knewJiminey Christmas, they were dull.

When Jade got home, there was already a great hustle and bustle going on in the Peterson household. Her older sister, Katie, was already in full gown, primping for the Stewarts party.

Youre late! Katie called downstairs to Jade. Hurry, please. I dont want to miss a single dance.

Jade rolled her eyes, trudging up the stairs. It was just another Stewarts party, with all of the same dull people. She couldnt work herself up to even a shred of interest, and as for hurrying, she had no doubts she would be ready far before Katieand Katie ought to know it.

Jades younger sister, Emily, carefully did up Jades hair, while their mother did up Katies. Then Jade slipped into her only party gown and she was completely ready, while Katie still sat in front of her dressing table mirror doing heaven knows what.

Jade paced around the room, anticipating chocolates. That was the only reason she consented to go to partiesthough she never admitted it to her older sister, for Katie attended solely to dance with gentlemen in the attempts of acquiring a husband, expecting her younger sister to do the same. But inwardly, Jade detested the thought of a husband, and would

never actively seek one out. She simply agreed to tag along for the chocolates.

Do you suppose Caleb will try to dance with you all night again? Emily asked with a teasing smile.

Jade took her gloves from her younger sister and snorted. Im leaving if he does. Do you hear me, Katie?I willleave.

Jade shuddered remembering Calebs big sweaty hands holding her as he plowed her around the dance oor. Why, he actually left stains on the shoulders of her dress!

Oh, Calebs not so bad, Katie commented. A girl could do a lot worse than Caleb Baker.

Then you can have him. Jade scowled.

Katie sighed. Thats not for me to decide, now is it? He doesnt have the slightest interest in me. Its you he wantsonly you.

Jade stared at her sister with surprise. Katie actually seemed to want Calebs attention. The thought bafed her, and made her wriggle up her nose with distaste. Katie obviously hadnt spent enough time with Caleb sure the man was muscular and somewhat wealthy (that being a major plus with her older sister), but the man was as dull as a turnip. Jade had no

intention of spending her life with a stuffy bore such as Caleb, and she didnt see how her sister could either.

When Katie and Jade nally arrived at the Stewarts, the party was in full swing. Jade tiptoed about the refreshment table, trying this goodie and that, only speaking when spoken to, and avoiding one Caleb Baker at all costs.

The only interest Jade had in the party beside the food was Drake Edwards. He looked quite dashing in his well-tailored suit, she had to grudgingly admit. But she refused to go across the room to talk to him. He had gotten a big head these last few years since going to the university. Every girl in town doted on him. It made her stubbornly unwilling to do the same. Besides, hadnt he just this very afternoon called her a kid?

Still, Jade had to smile with satisfaction when Drake nally noticed her presence. He was waltzing Miss Ellie Flowers about the dance oor, being quite charming, Jade was sure, when, by sheer chance, his eyes lit upon Jade. But having spotted her, Jade was pleased to see him crane his head this way and that, trying to get a better view as he and Miss Ellie waltzed by.

That brought Jade a slight comfort as she bit into a butter-cookie. She and Drake were friends. That was more than Miss Ellie or Diana Price or any other snooty girl at this party could say.

Jade Peterson!

Jade stopped short on her nibbling, her eyes growing wide with horror as she felt two sweaty hands latch on to either side of her waist. Caleb had sneaked up on her from behind, catching her completely off guard. Now she was trapped.

Jade turned around and gulped, hoping her frozen smile didnt look forced. Hello Caleb.

Calebs eyes scanned her body, alight with interest. Jade clenched her teeth. There was no way she was going to dance with this drooling oaf. Not tonight.

Your sister assured me that you had come, Caleb announced, his eyes still raking up and down her body. Boy, you look nice.

Why, Caleb, thank you. Jade tried to sound friendly, as now her sister was within earshot, most likely checking up on her. Their present family situation was, they needed moneyfast. If one of the sisters didnt land a rich husband soon they were going to lose their home. But Jade had no intention of landing a husbandsoon or otherwise. Let Katie get locked into wedlock. She was the one that wanted marriage anyway.

The music changed, beginning a new song.

How about a dance? Caleb already had Jades arm, dragging her out to the dance oor.

Jade tried to back away. NoI, uh

Promised this dance to me, Drake announced.

CHAPTER 3

Two weeks had passed since the Stewarts party and Jade had not seen Drake. She felt hurt by the slightseriously taking it as one since the insufferable man lived right next door. There was absolutely no reason why he couldnt stop by for a moment to say hello. Or stop by the store. Why didnt he stop by the store? Jade found herself practically crying at night, so hurt was she by his neglect.

Hadnt he had fun at the party?pelting her with snow? Of course he had or at least she had. Maybe he had only been being polite. Maybe hed really longed to be in that dreadful party, dancing with horrible Diana and that awful Miss Ellie. Maybe he had outgrown Jade. The thought was agonizing. It made her shudder.

Well, if I were you I would just forget about that scoundrel, Drake Edwards.

Jade raised her eyebrows at the sound of Drakes name. It was Pauline Roberts talking to Diana. The two had come into the store arm in arm, discussing Drake candidly.

Diana sighed. I know. Its just that when he comes aroundwell, you have to admit, he can be quite charming.

Yes, Diana. Pauline sighed in exasperation. Hes handsome and dashing, but hes a scoundrel nonetheless. Hes been sleeping with whores, Dianawhores. Pauline had hissed the words, somehow assuming she was being quiet. But every customer in the store turned in the girls direction, then red-faced looked away.

Pauline, Diana gasped.

Well, its true. Hes been hanging around The Town Tavernwith those girls. I heard he brings them hometo his home Diana.

Diana caught Jade listening to their conversation and narrowed her eyes at her until they were two tiny slits. Lets leave this wretched store, she said loudly to Pauline. I dont care for the help.

Pauline glanced over at Jade questioningly, then shrugged her shoulders, following her friend out of the store.

***

When Jade got home from work she marched over to Drakes and pounded furiously on his door. Drake answered only moments later, pleased to see his little neighbor, but puzzled by her agitation. What is it?What has you so upset?

Jade glanced next door to her own house, afraid her mother or sisters might somehow be able to hear their conversation. I need to come inside to tell you.

Drake held the door open for her, curious what the drama was all about. Her face was ushed, and her eyes as wide as saucers, as though she had news that the sky was falling. He waited for Jade to come inside, then folded his arms. Now, whats this all about?

Pauline Roberts Jade gulped trying to catch her breath, for she had run all of the way home from the store. Shes been spreading the most horrible, lthy lies about you.

Drake furrowed his brow. What has she been saying?

She said She said Jade couldnt bring herself to repeat the despicable rumors. They were all too ghastly to state aloud.

Drake studied his friend curiously, noticing that her face had ushed almost to the shade of purple. He sat down, relaxing in an armchair, patiently waiting for her to go on.

Jade played with a pleat in her skirt, knotting it into a ball, unable to meet his eyes. Pauline said that you have been loitering about The Town Tavernand She couldnt go on any further. She would rather the ground open up and swallow her whole than have to tell him the rest.

Drake ran his hands through his hair, realizing exactly what Pauline had told her. She said Ive been associating with the woman there, he said atly.

Jade nodded, surprised that he had guessed. She said youve been sleeping with them.

Drake cleared his throat, staring into Jades sweet, innocent face. He hated to be the one to douse her schoolgirl fantasies of him, but he wasnt going to lie to her. I have.

Oh.

To Drakes amazement, Jades face ushed even further.

For an awkward moment they stood staring at each other in awkward silence. Well, Iuh have to go, Jade murmured, bolting for the door.

Drake leaped out of his chair, cutting her off at the exit. Wait. He leaned against the door, blocking her escape. Dont leave.

No. Please. I want to go home.

Drake shook his head. Not yet. Not like this.

Please. I feel sick. Please, let me go.

Again, Drake shook his head. Just sit with me a minutetalk with me. He couldnt let her leave now. If he let her go, he was afraid she would never speak to him again. Jade was like that sometimesunyielding.

He just needed her to be with himto let her see that despite what she had just learned about him he was still the same personnothing had changed. They were still friends. She just needed things to be normal between them. The trick was, getting her to stay.

I made a cake, he announced in inspiration.

A cake?

He nodded. Can you smell it? Its chocolateyoure favorite. Its almost ready to come out of the oven.

Chocolate cake? She did smell something wonderful, now that he mentioned it. Before she had been too agitated to let her mind dwell on anything but Paulines awful remarks. But yes, she certainly did smell cake. It smelled heavenly.

Drake grinned, seeing that his clever distraction worked. Once hed thought of it, he was fairly certain that it would. Since Jades father passed away three years ago her family had been hard pressed for money. They no longer had the luxury to afford such tasty treats as cakes and piesand Jade had a sweet tooth that compared to no other that he had met in his twenty-four years of life. The girl adored desserts. All the better for me in this instance, Drake concluded with a smile.

You made a cake, yourself?

Drake nodded. I sent Alice over to my aunts to help with my father. Shes been there all week.

Oh.

Jade hadnt realized they were in the house alone.

Drake immediately perceived this news would get his little neighbors feathers all rufed again. Though he had known Jade her entire life, she suddenly had it in her mind that he was deviant.

I think the cake is probably done by now, he quickly stated, taking her by the arm, practically dragging her to the kitchen.

He took the cake out of the oven and tested it with a fork. Its done, he murmured with satisfaction.

Jade knitted her brow. Where did you learn to cook?

Drake glanced up at her, smiling at her amazement. Right here in this kitchen. Alice taught me.

Jade shrugged. Alice taught me to bake a pieback before we had to dispose of the servants. She said the way to a mans heart is through his stomach.

Drake raised his eyebrows. Dont believe everything you learn from the cook.

So the way to your heart isnt through food?

He shook his head slightly, not wanting to return to the subject of the whores at The Town Tavern.

Really?

He grinned, amused by her innocence. But I know its the way to yours. Youre going to have to wait though. The cake has to cool.

Oh come on, she groaned. I can eat it hot.

He rumpled her hair playfully. Patience, Jade. Its a virtueremember? And good things come to those who waitarent they always saying that? Well, in this case its true. Im going to frost it with chocolate icingafter it cools.

Chocolate icing. Jade moaned with delight. All right, Ill wait. CHAPTER 5

Jade ran upstairs to her room and ung herself on her bed, her face aming with shame. How could she have done that?let him do that? Those utterly wonderful, naughty things? Just the thought of him moving on her as he had done, his hard, rm body pressing against hers, his hands hungrily roaming her breast and waist and everywhere, lled her with excitement and lust all over again. She pulled the covers up over her head positive she would die of shame.

What must he think of her? The way she had wriggled about, gasping and panting, fondling his glorious chest. Surely, he must think of her as wicked as a whore.

She rolled on to her stomach, burying her face in her pillow. Cruel, bitter world! Why was her rst kissher rst realkiss with Drake Edwards? The only man she had ever, ever cared about? If she had known what to expect how truly spectacular kissing could bemaybe she could have somehow prepared herselfstilled herself.

But no, her rst time had to be with Drake. And it had to be the single most amazing event that had ever taken place in her life. It wasnt fair. Now he would tease her to no endthe way she carried on. Oh! Jade twisted around in agitation, getting tangled in her sheets. He would think of her even more as child than he did before. So inexperienced and eager.

There was a knock at her bedroom door, and Mrs. Peterson came in, worried about her daughter. I thought I heard you run up here. Are you alright?

Jade ung her covers down enough to peer at her mother, then pulled them back over her head. Im ne. I justI dont feel well.

Mrs. Peterson knitted her brow. Poor Jade. Anyone could see she wasnt ne. The girl was a bundle of agitation. Mrs. Peterson wanted to sit on her daughters bed and nd out what the trouble was, comfort her, but she knew better than to try. Her middle child wasnt one to discuss her problems. She never had been. Most likely she had exchanged harsh words with one of the girls from town.

Well, Mrs. Peterson sighed, if you need anything

Jade peeked from under the covers, watching her mom quietly leave the room. She wished with all of her heart she hadnt gone over to Drakes house. She desperately wished she hadnt heard Paulines wicked secrets about him either. Now she would always think of him differently. Why, she would never again be able to sit in the same room as him without blushing.

There was a knock at the front door. Jades eyes grew wide with alarm. She just knew it was Drake. What would he say to her mother? Her eyes grew even wider. Would he tell her mother? No, she reasoned, trying to calm herself back down, surely he wouldnt do that. He hadnt exactly been a gentleman himself. What could he say? I ravished your daughter in my kitchen and she let me.

No, he wouldnt do that.

She strained to hear the conversation downstairs, but everything was mufed. She denitely heard a male voice though. And a lot of giggling. Drake could always make her sisters laughhis stories were amusing and the way he told them made them even more so. Normally, Jade would race downstairs, eager to be in Drakes companyjealous that shed missed a moment of it. But this evening she would rather die than face Drake. She pulled the pillow over her face, longing to suffocate.

Katie gave a quick knock on Jades door and bounded briskly into the room. Drakes downstairs, she said brightly. Hes brought us cake.

Jade moaned.

Katie knitted her brow, staring at the lump of blankets that housed her sister. Are you sick?

Yes, Jade groaned. Leave me to die.

Shall I have Drake come up? He wanted to see you.

No. Send him away. Im dying.

Katie opened her mouth to say something, then shut it. If her sister wanted to be completely devoid of social opportunities, so be it. But she was surprised that her temperamental sister would refuse even to see Drake. It had always seemed to Katie that Jade was at least fond of him, if no one else.

Fine, be melodramatic.

Katie stomped back downstairs.

Drake peered up at the girl questioningly when she returned to the parlor alone. Wheres Jade?

Katie sighed, sitting gracefully into an armchair. She refused to come down.

Drake furrowed his brow, but made no comment. He was frustrated. He wanted to go upstairs and talk to her. To make things right. But he thought better of asking such a request. Jades bedroom wasnt the place to seek amends. It would make Jade nervous and well she should behe was still

haunted with the taste of her sweet, soft skin. Well, I should be going, he said quickly, rising to his feet.

Thank you for the cake.

The three women graciously saw him to the door.

Drake ran his hands through his hair. Would you make sure Jade gets some of it? He eyed Mrs. Peterson furtively. Take her up a big slice, would you?

Mrs. Peterson assured him that she would, wondering if perhaps she had been wrong about the reason for Jades agitation. Maybe her daughter hadnt had a squabble with a girl at all.

***

Diana Price and Miss Ellie came into The Coach just as Drake was nishing up paperwork. Well, there you are looking all the bit a business man, Diana said coquettishly.

Drake raised an eyebrow, but said nothing. Was he becoming a businessman? It seemed he was. His father had wanted him to take over his half of the stagecoach service when he retiredthat was happening quite a bit earlier than anyone had fathomedbut Drakes Uncle Charles, who owned the other half of the service, seemed to assume that was the settled plan. Drake didnt mind, not really. Only he hadnt exactly foreseen himself being a partner at The Coach. He was getting a degree at the University after all. He thought he would be something else.

But taking over The Coachhe was willing to do that. Only, he still had another semester of school, and he intended to nish.

Will you be able to go to the Stewarts party tonight? Diana asked, worried his new responsibilities might make him unable to frolic about as he had done in the past.

The Stewarts? Drake murmured absently, looking through his books.

I told you about the party yesterday, Diana pouted. Theyve invited scads of family from out of townapparently they are trying to help get the Peterson girls married off.

Drake looked up at the hint of Jades name. Pardon?

Diana frowned at his sudden interest, remembering the last Stewarts party where Drake had abandoned her to play with that bizarre Peterson child out in the snow.

Well, everyone knows, she sighed. The Petersons are poor. They cant pay the mortgage on their house. Mrs. Stewart has it in her head that Katie can land a rich husband.

Oh, Katie, Drake said in relieved agreement. Sure. She seems to be ready for marriage.

Diana eyed him. Well, ready or not, your Little Miss Snow Devil is probably going to get hitched as well. Word has it that Caleb Baker intends to marry her.

Drake grinned, though he kept his eyes on his paperwork. He may intend, but I doubt Jade intends.

It doesnt really matter what Jade intends. Havent you noticed how they live? Diana scoffed. Why I dont think Jade has more than three dresses to her name. And Ill bet you the world shell wear that dreadful blue dress to the Stewarts tonight.

Miss Ellie laughed. Of course she will. Its her party gown. Shes worn it to every party this past year.

Drake frowned down at his paperwork. He didnt like these girls making fun of Jade. I thought she looked beautiful, he murmured.

Both girls suddenly turned silent, seeming quite put out. Drake inwardly smiled with satisfaction. No need to mention Jade had looked far more enticing in her worn dress than either of them had looked in their brand new fashions. His point seemed to have been made.

Listen, he said distractedly, already formulating a plan. He just hoped it wasnt too late. I have some things to nish up here, but yes, Ill be at the party. Ill see you both there, shortly.

***

Drake nished with his business in town and headed his buggy towards home. He tapped the box beside him, smiling at how luck had worked in his favor.

As he was passing the feed store, he spotted a luscious woman walking briskly up ahead, her long auburn hair owing teasingly as she hurried along. It only took him a moment to realize it was Jade. She must have just gotten off work and was dashing home to prepare for the Stewarts party. The sight of her lled him with warmth.

It had been over a week since their kiss, but the sensuous taste and smell of her luscious, soft skin still lingered in his mind. Drake tugged at the reins of his carriage.

Jade, he called, leading his horses over her way.

He planned to give her a ride home, but to his frustration the curious creature ran off into the woods as soon as she saw it was him. CHAPTER 6

Drake jumped out of his buggy and chased after Jade into the woods. Hed be damned if he would let her get away again. Only a few days ago she had scurried away from him as well. It made him uneasy. He didnt like being avoidedespecially not by someone so dear to his heart. He wanted everything out in the opennow.

He caught Jade from behind, turning her around to face him.

Let me go! She took a swing at him, almost making contact with his nose, but he ducked out of the way, then grabbed her arm.

Calm down, he commanded, tightening his grip, seeming almost angry. But Jade would have nothing to do with the order. She fought him ercely, desperate to be freed.

Drake struggled with his patience. Jade was behaving like a trapped animal, lashing out at himtrying to cause him pain. He gripped her even tighter, backing her into a tree. Then, without even realizing he was going to do it, he drew his face near hers and kissed her delicious, pink lips hungry and fervent, right on the mouth.

Jade stopped ghting him instantly, completely melting into the kiss, her once tightly sted hands immediately nding his hair. She gasped with desire as his hard, lean body pressed ravenously against hers.

When Drake nally pulled away, Jade found herself breathless and aching for more. She stared into his lusting eyes, watching with desire as he wet his lips. He looked as though he wanted to ravish her some more, and Jade

was thoroughly thrilled with the idea. But then the insufferable man stunned her by doing something completely different. He picked her up as though she was as light as a feather, hoisting her over his shoulder.

Put me down, she cried, beating on his back, but he ignored her, carrying her like a sack of potatoes all the way to his buggy.

Im not letting you get away this time, he grunted, hoisting her onto his carriage. Last Saturday when you saw me in towndont think I didnt noticeyou bolted off in the other direction as though I were the devil himself.

You are the devil, she muttered through gritted teeth, embarrassed that hed noticed her run away that day as well.

So what is it that Ive done that makes me so evil? he asked, eyeing her curiously.

She stared down at her feet, not wanting to discuss the subject.

No, really. He yanked on the reigns. I want to know. What have I done to make you run away from meto beat on me to get away.

She looked out into the countryside, ignoring his questions. How could she tell him that simply being near him now made her tremble with desire? That she dreamed of him practically every night? She would rather cut out

her tongue than tell him these things. And she would rather never see him again than risk him detecting them on his own.

Drake halted the horses, and grabbed Jade by the shoulders, making her look up at him. What have I done? he asked angrily.

Youwe She let out a breath. We kissed.

Drake relaxed, letting his grip on her go. So, this wasnt about the whores at all. It was about their kissing in his kitchen the other day. He smiled, realizing she was embarrassed.

Jade noticed his grin and swung an angry st at him. He caught her by the wrist, chuckling a little.

I hate you! she growled, trying to leap off the buggy, but he held her tightly.

Jadeso you liked being kissed, he told her gently, making her gaze into his warm brown eyes. You think thats something to be ashamed about? Its not. Everyone likes being kissedso long as they like whose kissing them.

Her face reddened at his last words and she looked away in mortication. She hated being in love with himand even more than that she hated him knowing. It wasnt as though he could ever love her back. Not that way.

Not like she wanted him to. He slept with whores for pitys sake. How could she compete with that?

So, are we okay now? he asked giving her a sidelong glance as he commanded his horses into action. Are you still going to run away from me when you see me on the street?

She shrugged sulkily, imagining she probably would, but she knew better than to tell him that.

Youre still embarrassed? He looked bewildered, and a little amused. But we didnt do anything.

She clenched her teeth. Maybe it had been nothing to himafter all he was used to much, much more. But it had been everything to her. And come to think of it, yes they did do something. Those were not sweet, little, innocent kisses he pecked on her. No siree. Those were lustful, openmouthed, passion lled kisses, full of desirehis as well as hers. And his handsthey had been quite fervent in their roaming about her body. Jades face suddenly amed with embarrassment, remembering how beastly they had both behaved.

Drake gave her a sidelong glance. Okay, he hadnt exactly kept his hands to himself that day. And everything was brand new to her. He realized that. Even at the time he had known he should slow things down or she would act this wayexactly as she was acting nowskittish as a colt. Only he hadnt been able to resist her. She was so soft and curvaceous and smelled so good.

And she hadnt exactly been resistant. Far from it. Shed obviously enjoyed their little physical adventure. That in itself had made him extremely aroused, hearing her groan with pleasure at his touch, feeling her quiver. Damn, he was getting hard now just thinking about it.

He ran his hands through his hair. You have a lot of passion in you, he told Jade, as he stopped the horses in front of her house. It gets me a little crazyand I guess it gets you crazy too.

Embarrassed by his words, Jade tried to hurry off the buggy without comment, but Drake grabbed her arm, pulling her back. I have something for you.

Jade glanced at him questioningly, then stared at the box he handed her with acute amazement. What is it?

He raised his eyebrows. Open it.

Percolating with curiosity, Jade smiled, always delighted with surprises. She immediately forgot her self-consciousness. What had Drake bought her?

She raised the lid of the box, then stood staring at its contents, too moved to speak. It was a gownthe most luxuriously, beautiful gown she had ever seen. Bewildered, Jade stroked the rich green velvet, tears forming in her eyes. Why had he done this? Why had he bought her such an extravagant gift?

Jade wasnt like most girlsgirls that got presents from menas she had never had a beau in her life. She didnt know how to behave, or what to expect. Her only conscious thought waswhy?

I bought it because it matches your eyes, Drake told her gently. I thought you might like to wear it tonightto the Stewarts party.

Jade didnt know what to say. She was too touched for words. No matter how she tried to concentrate, she still couldnt get over the plaguing questionWhy? Why had he done this most thoughtful act?

Thank you, she managed to choke out, before her tears started to fall, making it impossible for her to say another word.

***

When Drake got to the Stewarts party he had only one intentionto avoid Jade. Of course he wanted to see her in the dress, and more importantly see Diana and Miss Ellie see her in the dress, but that was it. Nothing more. He wouldnt so much as dance with the tempting child, and he would certainly not touch her. He would stay as far away from her as humanly possible at all times. He didnt like the way he behaved with her as of latewell, he enjoyed it, thoroughly but it was wrong.

Jade was a sweet little angelplayful and fun. She shimmered with innocence. He didnt want to disrupt that. He liked that about her. And it disturbed him to no end that she suddenly felt she needed to run from him. But lord, she was right to run.

This evening when he had unexpectedly kissed her at the tree, it had taken every ounce of his restraint not to take her right there. And it seemed that he could have. Jade was inexperienced, simply thrilled by a mans touch. And she had such passionpassion he had unequivocally desired to release. It would have been easy to take advantage of hertoo easy. He supposed she knew that. He supposed that was why she was always running away.

So, he was willing to play along. He wouldnt let it happen again. Never again would he kiss her. He would go back to the university and take up with the woman thereeverything as before. His eshly fantasies of Jade would fade with time until at last he could think of her as a sister again. Then he would be safe to return home and run The Coach. And, more importantly, safe to associate with Jade without fear of attacking her.

At least those were Drakes plans until Jade nally showed up at the party. When his eyes lit upon her he gulped, ghting back a wave of desire.

Son of he muttered.

He shouldnt have bought her the dress. That was apparent. The sight of her in it, half-angel, half-vixen was too appealing for comfort. He suddenly needed the company of a whore. CHAPTER 7

It did not escape Diana Price that Jade suddenly had a new dressthough she chose to act as though she hadnt notice. But the dress made Diana suspiciousand angry. It was just this afternoon that she and Miss Ellie had commented to Drake on Jades lack of party appareland now, suddenly, the girl had a new dress. Had the scoundrel actually gone out and bought the brat one? The thought made Diana livid.

However, Diana tried her best to stay calm. Reason told her it was all a strange coincidence. After all, Drake wasnt the sort of man to actually shop for gifts. Certainly he could show up with expensive trinkets when he deemed them necessarybut they were more of the afterthoughts variety than actual considerationsjewelry and furs, and exotic perfumes. But a

dressa dress like thatit took thought and deliberate shopping. There was size to consider, as well as the cut and material.

And with the gown Jade had on, these things were perfect. The t was perfect. And that shade of greenDiana had to grudgingly admit, it set off Jades eyes beautifully. However Jade had come upon the dressthere was no doubt, it had been carefully tailored to her.

Still, there was lingering suspicion in Dianas mind. After all, there was no possible way Jade or her family could afford a dress like that. Why, something so velvety and scrumptious must have cost a fortune. Someone had to have bought it for her. The direct point of this knowledge pricked Diana to the core. No one but Drake even took notice of the coarse girl. No one but Caleb, and Caleb was too tasteless to discover a delicious dress like that.

Drake nibbled on Dianas ear. She swatted at him playfully.

Drake, people are watching, she protested, but inwardly she was thrilled by his uncharacteristically devoted attention. Perhaps he hadnt bought Jade the dress. After all, he hadnt gone near the girl all night.

Diana began to relax. Of course he hadnt bought her the dress. Why, he would never even go shopping with Dianafor a dressand Diana did things for him ... lurid things. At night sometimes he would sneak her down to the lake at least he used to. He hadnt done that in a long time. But he was being so attentivesurely he would want to tonight. Maybe she would let him. Maybe she wouldnt. Okay, so she would. She sorely missed having him on top of herbut she would make him beg for it.

Drake, lets dance, Diana commanded impatiently, taking his arm, but Drake held back.

If he was going to be stuck with Diana rather than Jademaybe he could at least get Diana to act like Jade at least a little. How about we take a walk outside instead?

A walk?outside?! Its freezing.

Diana had no intentions of doing it by the lake tonight. Since Hal was now permanently residing at Drakes aunts house they would have the Edwards home all to themselves. They had never done it there before. It would be superb. They could build a nice, warm re.

Drake put his arm through the resistant blondes. Diana, have you ever been in a snow ght?

Diana knitted her brow, confused by the question.

When I was twelve. She wriggled up her nose. Surly your not suggesting we leave the party to have one. Because if you are, the answer is no. She suddenly remembered the Stewarts last party, how Drake had abandoned her to play with Jade in the snow. And she remembered seeing Jade after their winter rompthe girl was a mess and soaked to the bone.

It would ruin my gown, Diana told him sternly.

Yes. It probably would, Drake agreed. But it would be fun.

Diana huffed. For a twelve year old, perhaps. She tugged on his arm, leading him out to the dance oor. Lets have civilized, adult fun.

Drake leered at her. Adult fun?

Well have that later, she told him. If youre a good boy.

He raised an eyebrow as he led her about the dance oor. Oh, Im always good.

Dianas mind was settled. Drake didnt buy Jade the gown. After all, he was an experienced man with experienced interests and Jade had never had a beau in her life. It was ridiculous to think a charmer such as he would actually be attracted to the dowdy girl. If anything, he probably spent so much time with her because he felt sorry for her.

Diana almost laughed, realizing how silly she had been to spend the evening suspecting that Drake had bought Jade the exquisite gown. Drake thought of the vulgar girl at best as a playmatesomeone to get into mischief with. If he were going to buy his backward neighbor anything he would probably buy her a slingshot. After all, she wasnt a normal girl. Though admittedly, Jade had nally blossomed this past year physically,

she was still absurdly backward. Probably a distant relative had bought her the dress out of pity.

***

When Jade rst arrived at the party she was brimming with excitement. She knew she looked beautiful in her new dress, and she was anxious for Drake to see her in it. Why, she even ignored the refreshment table, so eager was she to nd him.

It didnt hurt her pride any to see the way people stared at her as she made her grand entrance. Jade knew she owed their admiration completely to the dress, but that was ne with her, for she admired the dress as well. Never in her life had she owned anything so sensual and elegant and she cherished it with all of her heart.

pdf to jpg But where was Drake? He was nowhere to be found. Finally, a good fteen minutes after she had arrived, Jade at last spotted him. He was in the corner of the room with Diana Price, practically nibbling on her. When he

saw Jade, she noticed him somewhat freeze, his face looking curiously pained, but then he didnt so much as smile at her. He, in fact, turned his back to her, reverting his full, undivided attention to Diana.

Jade felt as though she had been punched in the stomach. She almost doubled over in pain, she was so hurt by the slight. Why had he bought her the dress anyway? Simply to snub her when she wore it? Obviously she had read too much into the lavish gift. To her horror, she realized she had completely misunderstood.

A lump caught in her throat remembering how she had envisioned this night. She had imagined Drake coming to her, whispering in her ear, telling her how beautiful she looked in the dress he had chosen for her.

It does match your eyes, he would tell her with adoration, his eyes full of enchanted awe.

Then they would spend the whole evening dancing togetheronly the two of them, ignoring everyone else. And then, after the party was over, he would escort her home in his carriage, and again, just like this afternoon against the tree, they would kiss.

Jade bit her lip, realizing how stupid she had been. Stupid, stupid. Of course Drake hadnt given her the gift as a declaration of his heartthe callous rouge had no heart. And she should have known better. Seeing Drake in the arms of another woman should have been no surprise at all. She knew Drakeshe knew him far too well to be have been absurd enough to think he meant anything by the thoughtful gesture. He was

generous with womanshowering them with gifts when he knew he was in their poor grace.

Jade bowed her head, trying to hide her tears. What was the matter with her? Why had she dared hope Drake suddenly felt about her the way she had secretly always felt about him? Simply because he had kissed her with passion? He was a scoundrel. Most likely hed kissed every girl in this town and the two next with such passiondouble for the whores.

Excuse me, came a male voice, startling Jade, I was trying to get my aunt to introduce us, butOh, pardon me are you crying?

Curious, Jade peeked up at the gentleman speaking to her. He sounded concerned and had a kind voice. She shook her head, covering her eyes with her hands, then took the handkerchief he held out to her.

I justI have something in my eye, she told him with a snife.

He stared at her uncertainly. Well, when you get it out may I have this dance?

Jade gave the man a closer look. He was dressed quite nicely, and he spoke as though he were a gentlemanKatie would probably love to marry him.

Jade hesitated. She didnt know the man, and though he was being quite considerate now, shed noticed him glance furtively in the direction of her

breast. But as of late, all men seemed to do that. Usually, it made Jade want to run away and hide from themavoid them at all cost. Her body had just recently grown into a powerhouse of rounded curves and she was unsure how to behave with them, being most uncomfortable with mens fervent attention. But this man, for some reason, didnt make her feel so distressed. He had nice eyes. They were warm and brown and reminded her of Drakes.

Finally Jade nodded. She would dance with the manand act charmed to do so. After all, the man wasnt Caleb and Jade needed a distraction to keep her tears at bay, but most of all, Jade was determined to keep her pride in tact.

With resign Jade supposed she could at least nd comfort knowing Drake obviously noticed that she was growing up. After all, he had kissed her. Not once, but twice. Both times with great passion. And this dress he bought her was regal and sophisticated. Not something you would buy for a younger sister at all. Why, it was something you would buy for an elegant lady. Jade held her head up a little higher. She would show that Drake Edwards a thing or two.

Jade forced a toothy smile up at the handsome stranger who was leading her masterfully about the dance oor.

Im Paul, he whispered in her ear, quite encouraged by her large smile, though Jade didnt notice in the slightest as she was busy trying to appear unscathed and cheery.

As the couple danced, Jade trained her eyes on her well-formed partner, using all her effort to stare at his succulent mouth, rather than allow herself to look about the room for Drake. Whenever her eyes would involuntarily begin seek Drake out, she would force them back on Pauls lips. Force herself to smile up at his mouth and act cheeryas though her heart wasnt breaking, as though she was delighted to dance with him rather than Drake. De-lighted.

***

Drake spent the evening trying not to stare at Jade, but he found the task frustrating and difcult. When the auburn vixen had rst arrived at the party, Drake could feel her eyes on him. He met her gaze a couple of times, unable to resist, but stayed at Dianas side. He knew little Jade was hurt by his avoidance of her, but he knew that absolutely things were better this way for them both.

Drake tried to keep his attention on Diana, but he found that task to be difcult as well. As of late, he had lost interest in the vein blonde. Her plans for the night sounded mildly entertaining, but to his frustration, he found himself desiring to do them only with his timid little neighbor.

Still, Drake remained doggedly at the party, pampering Diana. She was a poor substitute for Jade, but she was willing and eager and he needed someone. His father was dying and standing by helplessly watching him do it was tearing Drake apart. He needed a distraction. During the day he found paperwork from The Coach helped keep his mind absorbed, but at night he needed something more physical.

I want you Diananow, Drake whispered in her ear. True, he wanted Jade morevery much more. But Jade was off limits to him and Diana was very much in them. He wasnt a choosy man at times like this. He would take what he could get.

Diana smiled, liking to have a man wrapped around her nger, especially one so viral and handsome as Drake Edwards. She yearned to have him on top of her, as it had been so long since hed been there, but Diana also enjoyed dancing and Drake was a masterful partner. He made her feel like the belle of the ball. But more than anything, Diana was delighted by the jealous looks she was receiving from all of her friends.

Just a few more dances. Diana patted his cheek. You can be good for that long cant you?

Drake doubted that he could. He considered simply leaving. What he had on his mind would be better served at The Town Tavern, and there he would be spared having to be polite and sociable, two niceties he didnt feel like being.

But taking a furtive glance in Jades direction, Drake reconsidered his decision to depart just yet. He furrowed his brow. Maybe he should stick around awhile. Jade had a line of suitors waiting to dance with her. Many of them men he didnt know. He remembered Diana mentioning something about Mrs. Stewart inviting relatives to the party from out of town, but hed be shot if she didnt invite her whole clan.

That would be ne, Drake told himself. Only he didnt like the way some of the men were looking at Jade. They ogled her as though they wanted to do the same things to her that he wanted to do. Suddenly he wanted to punch some noses. Especially the guys who was dancing with her now. Drake shoved his hands in his pockets. Jade was actually smiling at the guy. Jade. Smiling at a guy.

***

Jade had to admit she was enjoying the party despite Drakes neglector maybe because of it. Suddenly she felt she had something to prove. She refused to let Drake think that his kisses meant as much to her as they truly did. So, tonight she actually danced with men at the partylots of them.

It helped that Mrs. Stewart had invited many people from out of town, and so it wasnt the same dull people that she normally tried to avoid. Some of the men were actually quite funespecially Mrs. Stewarts nephew, Paul. He had a nice smile and twinkle to his eye that, as the night wore on, reminded her more and more of Drakes.

Jade discovered that in her new dress she was able act like a whole new person. Tonight, curiously, she felt as elegant and lovely as her beautiful gown. It was fun dancing with men that didnt actually know her. She was able to irt and could pretend to be anything she wished. In fact, she told many of the men that she was visiting from New York and engaged to a count. She gured that would keep them from thinking about her as marriage materialjust in case any of them took her irting to heart.

Another plus about so many new men, it was easier for Jade to avoid Caleb. However, she was feeling generous, so when he asked her to dance she didnt run away. She was actually quite friendly to him, she felt, under the circumstances. Since he stared down at her breast the whole time that they danced.

Still, she was quite relieved when Paul cut in. I heard youre engaged, he told her with a smile.

***

Mrs. Stewart cooled her ruddy face with her hand fan as she apprehensively watched her nephew, Paul, waltzing with Jade Peterson. She would be delighted if Paul were to marry a Peterson girlonly not that one. Jade was a stunning child, but she was quite odd, and Mrs. Stewart had her doubts the girl was capable of making a good wife. For one thing, Jade Peterson played. She was never where she ought to be and forever acting inappropriately, and most assuredly getting into mischief. The girl was undignied.

The strange child would come to her parties, eat her food, and snub her guests. Mrs. Stewart was positive the girl was much too immature to be a good companion, let alone a wife and mother. Still, her nephew seemed quite taken with the backward child. He actually followed the girl with his eyes whenever she left his side.

Mrs. Stewart sighed. She had led Katie over to Paul already three times tonight, but the silly boy obviously had no interest in someone with quiet dignity. What was wrong with the young men these days? Were they no longer interested in a lady? Mrs. Stewart frowned noticing Drake Edwards staring at Jade even as he led Diana Price about the dance oor. No, obviously they were not. CHAPTER 8

Jade breezed into the house after work, then stopped cold. Her mother, Katie andgaspDrake sat in the parlor, all of them silent and staring at her as she came breezing into the house.

What is going on? she asked, noticing with apprehension as Drake squirmed in the arm chair he was sitting in, looking anywhere but directly at her.

We were lecturing our good neighbor, Drake, on how to behave at parties, Mrs. Peterson remarked. Or, more to the point, how not to behave at parties with you.

Jades face reddened. Why, whatever do you mean?

What do I mean? Mrs. Peterson sighed. Katie tells me you met a perfectly wonderful gentleman at the party, but you abandoned the fellow to have a snowball ght with our dear neighbor, Drake.

Jade scowled at Katie. Why couldnt the busybody mind her own business? We were having fun.

Drake gave a furtive glance in Jades direction, then looking quite uncomfortable, stared out the window. He was at a loss of what to say. When the two women had called him in for a chat he knew he was in trouble. And they had lectured him for a good full hour before Jade had nally shown up. Now, he supposed, it was her turn. But he felt guilty about it, knowing last night was completely his fault.

He had purposefully lured Jade away from that manwretched fellow enticed her into a snowball ght. But what did Mrs. Peterson want? Jade to marry that man? Jade to marry any man? The girl was too young and carefree to be tied down into wedlock. Anyone could see that.

Weve discussed this Jade. Katie scowled right back at her sister. We need to marry. And unless Drake plans to marry you, you need to place your attentions elsewhere.

Yes, Mr. Edwards, Mrs. Peterson agreed with a glint of actual amusement in her eyes, You need to let my daughter socialize with other men. A teasing smile crept upon the ladys lips. Unless you plan to marry my daughter.

Drake cleared his throat uneasily, giving another furtive glance in Jades direction. Then, still quite chagrin, he continued his staring of the tree outside the window.

Noyou arent planning to marry her? Mrs. Peterson still bore her snide smile. Well, then, dont be so familiar. You are leading others to think otherwise.

Jade reddened even further. Only, she didnt understand why they were so smug with their remarks. What was so impossible about Drake marrying her? It didnt seem ridiculous. In a small voice she said, Let people think what they like.

Jade, we can not let them think what they like. You know as well as I that we need to marry. Who will marry a woman who runs off with another man to play in the snow?

Jade scowled down at the ground. I dont want to get married.

Well, too bad, Katie huffed. Thats what grown ups do, and like it or not you are now an adultso start acting like one.

Mrs. Peterson glanced at Drake. You are a bad inuence on my playful daughter Mr. Edwards. I blame you as much as her.

So Ive observed, Drake stated with a slight smile.

So, you act as a grown up as well, Mrs. Peterson stated lightly. No more enticing my daughter out into the snow when she should be making male acquaintances and acting as a lady.

Drake nodded, looking guilty. Yes madam.

Help her to act tting to meet a future husbandbe a helper, not a hindrance in this task.

Drake nodded again. Yes madam.

***

Before going to bed that night her mother smoothed back Jades hair. Dont set your sights on Drake Edwards, she advised. Hes fond of you. But the boy is too young and unsettled. Hes not thinking with his heart these days.

What do you mean?

Her mother looked away. Hes thinking with something else.

Hm, Jade tried to sound innocent and uninterested, but she knew what her mother was talking about. She knewexactly what her mother was talking about and it got her rather ushed and excited. But at the same time, her mothers advice lled Jades heart with great despair. How could she possibly set her sights elsewhere? She loved Drake. She always had. She had lied this evening when she said she didnt want to marry. She did. She wanted to marryDrake. Only Drake.

Jades heart gave a start when there was a sudden knock at the front door. For a wild, silly moment she imagined it was Drake, come to declare his undying love and intent to marry her. But sadly, it was only Mrs. Claybourn with sad, wrenching news. Drakes father had passed away this evening.

Once everyone was nally settled and asleep in their beds, Jade tip-toed over to Drakes house, wanting to be there for him, to comfort him in his hour of need. Unfortunately, she found that Drake was sleeping as well. He had probably drunk himself into oblivion. Jade turned to go, but found she couldnt leave. Not now, not yet. She wanted to be near him, even if he didnt know. She gingerly crawled into his warm bed, nestling beside him. She would hold him, comfort him while he slept.

Still, unconscious, Drakes arms wrapped around her, pulling her close. Her heart quickened, liking the warmth of his body, the strength of his embrace.

Poor boy, she said aloud, kissing him lightly on his soft, pink lips.

He kissed her back, slightly roused from sleep, and, to her delighted surprise, continued kissing, his hot mouth pressing against hers, rst with soft, warm delights that sent tingles down to her toes, then growing in intensity to hot, burning passion, sending waves of excitement through her body.

Jade gasped as he pinned her down and rolled on top of her, his mouth and velvet tongue ravishing her.

Mmmm, Drake groaned, only half-awake, delighting in the curves and taste and smell. Then his eyes sprang open, becoming fully conscious. Jade?

He pushed her away as though she was on re. What are you doing here?

I just want to be with youto comfort you.

Leave, he growled.

No. I want to be with you.

Jade leave now, he ordered. Ive been drinking. Go. Now. He practically threw her out of the bed.

Jade ran home in tears and crawled into her bed, curling into a tight ball. She felt rebuffed and humiliatedat rst. But slowly it began to dawn on her why Drake had pushed her awaywhat would have happened if she had stayed. The thought made her heart speed up and her body tingle.

But then she groaned, realizing: Why, he could have gotten me pregnant!

The thought utterly terried herat rst.

She cringed, thinking of herself with child. But as she tossed and turned, getting tangled in her sheets, it occurred to her: If she were pregnant, Drake would have to marry her. The thought made her smile.

She had no intention of marrying Caleb. She never had. However, now she realized she wanted to marry Drake. The thought was like a brick wall falling on her head. Of course she wanted Drakeshe had always wanted Drake. All of her lifethe only man she had desiredDrake.

But drat, he had no intentions of getting marriedat least not for many years. Jade frowned. She would have to trick him. She knew it wasnt nice or right. But by cracky, she would make it right. She would be the best wife a man could ever ask for. Of course she hated to cook and sew and clean housebut he had Alice for that. Jade would do other things to please himraise his children for instance. She would enjoy that. Children were funonce they werent crying little babies anymore. Yes, she was quite positive she would enjoy being a mother once the children reached about the age of seven or eight. Then they could play.

***

Jade tiptoed back over to Drakes house and crawled into his bed again.

What are you doing here?

She kissed him.

Jade?

She kissed him again, so soft and sweetmaking the sound of a cat purring, her soft, warm body comforting himin this hour that he believed he could have no comfortarousing him in a way The Town Tavern women never possibly could.

Moaning, he let little Jade kiss him again and again with her soft, pink lips, let her smooth hands slide up his shirt and gently glide along his chest, making him stiffen and catch his breath.

Jade, he groaned.

But she met his murmuring with more kisses, so tantalizing he knew he could never turn to a whore and nd as much passion and desire as he felt now.

As much as he knew he shouldnt, he let Jade seduce him to the point he needed a sheath.

No dont put that on, Jade said with alarm as he reached for the protection.

It will only take a momentbut I have to otherwise

Please dont bother with it. You said it makes the experience less pleasurable. I want pleasure.

Drake groaned. He wanted pleasure too. He detested the sheath and he knew it would make it uncomfortable for Jade, but the alternative was unthinkable. I have to wear it. If I dont

She kissed him, taking the sheath out of his hands, tossing it away. Dont think about that. Think about me. Dont I feel nice? She rubbed his hands down her curvaceous body. Do you like that?

He groaned again. Of course he liked it. He had imagined this moment this entire scene constantly as of late, playing it over and over again in his head. She was so soft and sweet and tasty. But

He reached in his drawer, pulling out another sheath. Someone had to be responsible.

Drake, no. I dont want that.

Jade, you dont understand. If I dont wear it, you might end up carrying a baby.

Our baby, she murmured.

Yes, our baby.

Drake blinked. Suddenly it dawned on him what she was trying to do. Sweet little Jade.

He threw her away from him. Why?

Why what? She tried kissing him again, but he pushed her away.

Why are you trying to trap me into marrying you?

Jade sat up, her stomach knotted and her face burning, embarrassed that she was such a failure. She had heard of woman doing this to men all of the time. Why had it not worked for her?

I dont want to marry Caleb.

He furrowed his brow. Then dont.

But I have to. I have to marry someone. Katie ought tobut she hasnt had any prospectsand I detest mine. But youDrake I want to marry you.

Her words touched him. Softened his anger a little. Sweetshe was still sweet, even after trying to pull such a dirty trick.

At last he said, I wouldnt mind marrying youI guess.

Jade raised her head hopefully at those words, until he went on, If I were going to marry someone. But I dont plan toat least not for a long time. Im only twenty-four. And I still have a semester left at the university.

But you said youre going to take over your fathers business. You dont need a degree for that.

No. I dont, he said thoughtfully. But Im so close to nishingIm going to nish. Then Ill come back and work at the Stage Coach.

By then Ill be married to Caleb Baker and carrying his child, Jade grumbled with disgust. I hate you Drake Edwards.

She threw the covers off, moving away from him, but Drake grabbed her arm. Dont be mad at me for not wanting to marry you, he said through clenched teeth. What you tried to do was a horrible thing. I always thought of you as sweet and pure, but you are as sneaky and self-serving as any whore at The Town Tavern.

She kicked him hard enough to elicit his release of her, and she quickly scrambled to the ground, nding her dress.

Jade, Drake ran his hands through his hair in frustration. I wouldnt make a very good husband.

She clenched her teeth. But I would have made a good wife.

Drake watched her run out of the door, his heart aching, suddenly feeling quite certain she was right.

***

Drake woke in the morning with a start, then looked around his room, confused. Had it only been a dream?a drunken stupor?little Jade coming to his bed last night? No, he could still taste her sweetness, smell her sexy, Jade scent.

Drake rubbed his face in frustration, trying to get the lurid thoughts of the little nymph out of his head, but they refused to go.

He ung back in his bed, thoroughly shaken. Little Jade, sweet little Jade. What had she done to him? He wanted more of her, needed more of her now. He felt he couldnt even turn to The Town Tavern. Not anymore. A whore couldnt do it for him now, now that hed tasted Jade.

He quickly dressed, realizing it was already mid-afternoon.

Unsure of his excuseor even his real intenthe headed over to Jades home anyway, nding Mrs. Peterson speaking animatedly with Mrs. Claybourn out on her porch steps. The two women hushed their excited chatter upon his approach, their gazes turning sympathetic, telling him how dearly his father would be missed.

Yes. Thank you. Drake said, clearing his throat, not wanting these feelings thrust upon him. He only wanted Jade, to hold her again, to hear her soft moans purr his name.

I quite apologize about the stern lecture I gave you yesterday, Mrs. Peterson said, somewhat beaming. It seems my worrying was all in vain. That dear fellow that Jade met at the Stewarts party was quite taken with her, despite your playful inuenceor perhaps even a bit because of it. He said her romping through the snow only added to his desire to take her hand in marriage!

Drakes stomach lurched. Marriage?

Yes! The lady quite beamed from ear to ear, taking her middle daughters hand as Jade shyly came to stand with the three of them, looking radiant and glowing in the afternoon sun. Mrs. Peterson excitedly went on, Jade is to marry Mr. Paul Stewart.

The man that made Jade smile? Drake couldnt bear it.

Like hell she is, Drake said.

I beg your pardon? Mrs. Peterson gasped, quite taken aback by her neighbors sudden fervor. What in the world had gotten into the affable young man?

Jade is to marry me, he said, taking Jades other hand, pulling her from her mother. Suddenly, he realized he had to have her, all of her, all to himself.

Jade gasped, right along with her mother.

Her eyes lled with hope and happinessand thank the high heavens, burning desireas she gazed into his. I am?

Drake squeezed her hand, getting down on his knee. Of course.
