Integrity and values . . . The words integrity and values both describe complex, contended concepts, and yet are used far more often than they are defined. As an organization, ICAI has defined integrity, through its Fundamental Values project, as maintaining, even in the face of adversity, honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility. But of course there are a whole host of other values that are also important to us, to our students, and to society, and sometimes, values conflict. Rather than looking at each instance of academic misconduct as stemming from a lack of values and integrity, Id encourage all of us to inquire as to whether academic integrity was overcome by a (perhaps misplaced) adherence to another value. Loyalty to a friend, or competiveness for future opportunities, as examples, can be catalysts for tutoring and hard work, or for sharing papers or cheating on tests. While conflicting values do not excuse cheating, it is important to understand that ethical conflicts as well as ethical lapses can contribute to academic misconduct. The more we understand these conflicts the more opportunity we have to help students learn to make more integrous decisions in the future.

University of Miami Honor Council Seeks Student Support, Integrity

By: Nicky Diaz The Miami Hurricane 7/11/2012

The University of Miami Undergraduate Honor Council sought a stronger

presence on campus this academic school year to highlight the importance of academic integrity through numerous events. Founded in the spring of 1986 after students voted in favor of a Student Government initiative, the student-run council consists of 29 representatives who are responsible for holding hearings of alleged violations to the Universitys Honor Code. The council has investigated more than 450 cases in the past 25 years, but former Honor Council President Renata Baptista has recently noticed fewer cases in comparison to three years ago, when she first joined. The cases that have been adjudicated typically result in disciplinary probation or warnings. Thirty-three percent of the investigations have resulted in suspension, five percent in expulsion and 62 percent in disciplinary action or warnings, according to the universitys website. Its scary to me that so many people are nonchalant about the whole thing, Baptista said. If you dont have integrity now, youll have a weak character for your whole life. Although the cheating on UMs campus hasnt reached such an extreme, members of the council still want students to realize the importance of academic dishonesty. This year we wanted to develop a dialogue with the UM community, Baptista said. We want to be here for them; were not out to get them. We were more involved on campus this year so we can spread our message. The council co-sponsored PostSecret Live on September 7, and cosponsored CNN anchor and special correspondent Soledad OBriens appearance on September 12. It also moved up its annual event, Academic Integrity Week, toward the beginning of spring semester to spread the councils message before midterms.
