BASIC DRILL ROUTINE JUNIOR

WITH ADDITIONAL DETAILS FOR JUNIOR STATE CHALLENGE The Basic Drill Routine for Junior players is an introduction to standard drills with the challenge of a Compliments and an Eyes Right. Primarily, it is an opportunity for Coaches to give experience and competition to members not participating in the Technical Drill Routine. The Basic Drill Routine is made up of four compulsory movements to be performed in sequence as detailed. GENERAL The Basic Drill Routine will consist of 6 to 12 members. The Pace length = 60cm There will be no signals. At Start, team members will be in a block formation (ranks of three) at two pace intervals. The Assembly Point shall be designated in a position appropriate to the competition venue. The Basic Drill Routine will be 43 seconds approximately. The Junior State Challenge will be 1 minute 25 seconds. EYES RIGHT Arms will swing. The head/eyes of the Marker (No.1 member) will not turn to the Right but will remain facing the Front to maintain the direction of the squad. The head/eyes of all other marchers will turn to the Right and Front as detailed. DISCS There will be a Disc at Start. The centre member of the Front Rank (No.2) will be on the Start Disc. There will be a Disc at Movement 2 for No.2 Member. There will be a Disc at Movement 3 for No.1 Member. There will be a Disc at Movement 4 for No.1 Member. SIGHTER FLAG A sighter flag/witchs hat (for No.2 member) shall be located on the Front Boundary, opposite the Start Disc, 7.8 metres from the centre line. BASIC DRILL DETAILS

MARKING TIME:

Feet will be raised alternately, meaning one foot action will complete before the other one starts. The leg and foot will be lifted to the line of march. As the knee is raised, the toe will be left behind until the required foot angle of the Mark Time is achieved. This will be maintained until the toe returns to the ground. In the raised position the tip of the toe will be immediately below the tip of the knee. The foot shall be at an angle to the ground at a height from the ground of at least: Junior - 15cm. Such height need not be consistent from movement to movement. The up and down movement, executed at an even speed, will occupy one beat of quick time. The placement of the foot flat on the ground (after arriving with the mark time angle) will be on the emphasis of the beat of music. As the leg is straightened to resume the Stationary Position, the pelvis and trunk will shift laterally (towards the side) about 2.5cm to the weight bearing side, to centre the weight over the hip. Until this occurs the other foot remains stationary. The feet will be placed in the Stationary Position, unless stipulated otherwise (ie Position of Attention).
STEP OUT FROM MARK TIME:

Having made the last beat of Mark Time when intending to step out on the march, the foot will travel forward in the same manner and at about the same speed (that is to occupy a halfbeat of quick time) as it does in a normal marching pace. The arrival of the foot on the ground at the end of this pace must coincide with the beat of music to which the Team is marching. The hesitation necessary to make this possible (that is a half-beat of quick time), will be spent in the Stationary Position before stepping out. The arms will commence to swing when the step out is commenced.
ACTION HALT:

The rear foot will travel forward at the same speed and in the same manner as a normal marching pace (just clear of the ground), to rest flat in the Stationary Position (weight evenly distributed). The arms will drop to the sides in conjunction with the travelling foot reaching the Stationary Position. The time taken by the foot travelling forward will be approximately one half beat. There will be a hesitation in the Stationary Position to complete the one beat of quick time for the Action Halt.
HEAD TURNS- EYES RIGHT:

The head turn will complete in conjunction with the foot contacting the ground in tempo. Heads will turn to the position of Right eye being in alignment with the front of the Right shoulder. The timing of the head turn on the march will be one half beat of quick time (ie from midstance to end of pace.

AT FINISH

PRIOR TO COMMENCEMENT AND AT START:

For the Basic Drill Routine, all Teams shall line up in squad formation, in programme order to await the Marshals instructions to move to the Assembly Area. As the previous team marches off the competition area (except for the first team on), the Marshal shall instruct the team to move from the Assembly Point to the Start Position with No.2 member on the Start Disc, where they will Mark Time, if necessary correct spacing, covering and dressing and Halt. Team members will remain steady, and not correct the Position of Attention or rearrange any part of the Costume. The Marshal shall check that the judges have completed their previous work, then direct: Judges Ready (Holding up Team Number Plate to be clearly visible to all Judges.) The Team will take up the position of Attention. Music Ready A pre-arranged signal by the audio technician will notify the Marshal that the music is ready. Thank You, Team - shall be the cue for the music to start. From the Position of Attention, a member of the Team, will command: Team - Quick MARCH (L-L-L), completing within 16 beats. The Team members will pause one beat, then step off with the initial pace being so timed that the Left foot comes to the ground on the next Left (loud) beat of music.

All Members:

PIVOT MARK TIME:

Action:

The pivot marcher will bend the knee relative to the angle required, and lift the toe just clear of the ground, toes in line. The lifting and placement of the feet will allow the pivot to turn evenly through the required degree of the turn. When turning to the Left, the Left foot will be placed on the same spot with the Right foot being placed around a very small arc (toes approximately in line). The pivot will synchronise the maximum lift of the heel with the action of the other marchers executing shortened paces. The greater the angle, the higher the heel, the faster it must drop without exaggeration, force or over-bracing the knee, on the emphasis of the beat. The movement of the lift and drop shall be relatively smooth. There will be a transference of weight but no heel hesitation.

Timing:

SHORTENED PACE:

Action:

Timing:

The rear foot will travel forward in the same manner as in a marching pace to midswing. The angle of the foot and the bend of the knee will progressively develop as the foot travels forward from midswing (toes in line) and will be relative to the pace taken. The progression of the angle of the foot will peak at the extreme end of the pace and will be relative to the length of pace being taken. The angle will determine whether the toe or ball contact the ground first, prior to the heel being lowered smoothly on the emphasis of the beat of music. The speed will be relative to the length of pace being taken. When wheeling, the foot in flight phase will follow the specified arc. The shoulders will travel forward at half the speed of the foot in flight. The speed of the travelling foot will be regulated to allow the toe/ball to contact the ground fractionally before the emphasis of the beat. The timing of the toe/ball contact will be uniform throughout the team.

COMPLIMENTS TO THE FRONT: PART 1 To the Salute At Position

Left Beat:

Right Beat: Left Beat: Right Beat:

From the Stationary position place the Left foot (ball to ground) to the front of the Right foot, both feet in own line of march, weight over the Right foot. The distance from toe to toe shall be about 30cm and uniform throughout the team. Pause one beat The feet will remain in Foot Front Position, at the same time the Right arm will be lifted to the Salute position in one beat. Pause one beat

COMPLIMENTS TO THE FRONT: PART 2 Lower From the Salute At Position Left Beat: The Left foot will be raised smartly to the Mark Time position where Right Beat: Left Beat: Right Beat:

there will be a hesitation to complete the Left beat. Pause one beat. The Left foot will be lowered to the Stationary position at the same time the Right hand/arm will be lowered to the Attention position. Pause one beat.

Judging ceases at the completion of the Compliments. The Team will Left/Right Turn and march directly toward the side boundary. After crossing the side boundary, they will form single file to march off the competition area. The manner in which the team forms the single file is free choice.
