PRESSED GRATINGS TYPE R

Pressed gratings are made up of a sturdy grid
of bearing- and crossbars of solid strip steel.
The dimensions are extremely precise due to
the advanced, computer-controlled production
process, in which the straightening, punching
and cutting to size are very accurate.
Part of the crossbars are automatically
pressed into the bearing bars and enclosed
by the unique 2mm thick Arco profile border,
which guarantees a stable connection.
Other possibilities are a practically flat
butted border of 3 mm thick, or other flat
borders of various heights or thicknesses.

This type of grating is most suitable for
extra heavy loads. Production uses heavier
material markedly increasing the bearing
capacity.
These standard gratings are provided with
flat borders of which the thickness is
identical to that of the bearing bars.
In addition, specific versions can be made to
order. If desired, all types can be provided
with anti-slip serration of the bearing and
crossbars.

FULL PRESSED GRATINGS TYPE RK

This type of grating has been provided with
identical bars in two directions according to
the so-called manufacture principle.
Their visual uniformity allows architects much
room for exciting or playful concepts.
They are frequently used as sunblinds in
awnings. These gratings can be supplied
powdercoated in all standard RAL colours and
due to their attractive use of colours can be
an intriguing element in the total concept.

LOUVRE GRATINGS TYPE RL

These gratings are made up as louvres, where
the bearing bars are installed at an angle of
30 or 45. This makes them most suitable as
sunblinds and partitions. Optically, they
appear dense, thereby providing much
privacy as partitions. The see-through space
can be determined by varying the height of
the louvre bars. Louvre gratings can be made
as rain-entry free. As standard border finishes
they can be provided with 5 mm thick flat
steel. Other options are available on request.
The louver gratings can be ordered powdercoated in all standard RAL colours.
These colour elements guarantee a high
attraction value in an architecturally total
design.

BALCONY FENCES AND PARTITIONS

TYPE RO
Architecturally decorative
Arco products are characterized by top quality
and professionality. This is true for the wide
range of gratings with highly universal
applications, but also for Arco balcony and
partition fences. It is especially these Arco
products that inspire architects to place
highly decorative and visually attractive
accents. Creativity can never be standard.
That is why Arco supply the balcony and
partition fences exactly as specified in the
design. Straight or shaped, with variations in
the height of the bearing bars and the mesh,
galvanized or powdercoated in any chosen
RAL colour. Custom made in optima forma.
In a few words, Arco function as sparring
partners for the architect and provide the
necessary specialized support. The balcony
fences are provided with gratings of the type
RO with 3 mm bearing bars and 5 mm round
cross bars. They can be supplied in various
versions, in which also the standard border
finish of 5 mm thick steelplate can vary as
ordered.

FORGE WELDED GRATINGS TYPE SP

These grating mats with a bearing-bar length
of approx. 6,000 mm and a standard mat
width of 1,000 mm are the basis for exactly
custom-made gratings with universal
applications. They are made of strip steel
with crossbars of drawn and twisted steel of
square 6 or square 8 mm. The crossbars are
pressed into the solid material under great
force and at the same time all connections
are resistance-welded. Depending on the
mesh, the grating has 600 to 1,000 welded
connections per m2, which makes for a high
stability. Using these grating mats,
practically any desired size can be custom
made.
The advantages of SP gratings:
remain right-angled even under rough
treatment
safe anti-slip effect by the twisted crossbars
very stable, even in non-galvanized version
possibility for large bearing-bar lengths
especially suitable as gutter grid that can
easily support the weight of truck and
forklift truck traffic.

Additional safety by serrated bearing bars providing

an even larger anti-slip effect. Specially suitable for
conditions where rain, ice or oil lead to extra risk.
This version is not possible for all types and is
supplied on request.

Type SP-safety offshore

Specially produced for use in the offshore industry.
An additional round bar installed halfway between
the bearing bars prevents tools or objects from
falling through the grating. The dimensions satisfy
the requirement that 15 mm diam. ball should be
stopped by the grating.
Choice of the following materials:
steel grade S 235 jr, from 2 to 5 mm bearing-bar
thickness.

SP treads
For all SP versions, corresponding treads can be supplied. The standard treads are provided with a safe
step profile and mounting plates for fastening between the strings.

Construction guidelines for hanging stairs

CONSTRUCTION GUIDELINES
The height (H), basic length (L) and width (W) of a stairs are the most obvious dimensions for constructing stairs.
Practical experience gained indicates that there must be a certain agreement between the slope of the stairs (D),
the step-up (O) and the step-in (A) so that the stairs can be comfortably walked. The overlap (S) must be at least
10 mm. The slope angle (D) must be between 30 and 45. Since often there isnt enough basic length, the ideal
stair slope cannot be realized. This makes a compromise necessary. For this see the table of for stairs of known
slope.
If the stair slope isnt known, but the height (H) and basic
length (L) are known, then the basic length (L) is divided by the
height (H). In the following table select the best approximation
of the ratio.
Exemple : Stair slope (D)
Basic length (L)
Height (H)

:?
: 3,0 m
: 2,5 m

L : H = 3.0 : 2.5 = 1.2

The stair slope is 40.

Extract from BS EN ISO 1461 thermal galvanization

4. General terms and conditions

Remark 2

4.1 Hot dip galvanization area

It is not possible to define the appearance and finish

that covers all requirements in actual practice.

The hot dip galvanization bath contains mainly

molten zinc. The total of impurities (other than iron
and zinc) in the mass of the molten zinc may not be
higher than 1.5%. The impurities referred to are
defined in ISO 752 or EN 1179.

Flux residues are not allowed. Thickened spots and

zinc ashes are not allowed where they affect the
intended use of the hot dipped galvanized objects or
their corrosion-resistance requirements.

6. Top coating properties

6.2 Thickness

6.1 Appearance

6.2.1 General

The normal visual inspection during acceptance

must show that all relevant surface areas of all
galvanized objects are free of thick spots in the form
of blisters (i.e. raised parts without solid material
underneath), roughness and sharp points (if these
can cause injury) and ungalvanized patches.

Top coating applied by hot dipped galvanizing are

intended for the protection of iron and steel objects
from corrosion. The duration of the corrosion
protection provided by EN ISO 1461:1999 to such
top coatings (light or dark grey) is approximately
proportional to the thickness of the top coatings.
Extremely caustic circumstances and/or extremely
long life spans can require thicker top layers than
the top layers indicated here.

Remark 1
Roughness and smoothness are relative concepts
and the roughness of top coatings on objects
galvanized after manufacture differs from those of
mechanically treated objects such as galvanized
plate and wire.
The appearance of darker or lighter grey patches
(e.g. a cellular pattern of dark grey spots) or some
unevenness on the surface is no reason for rejection:
also white spots caused by storage (white or dark
corrosion products), mainly alkaline zinc oxide formed
during storage under moist circumstances after hot
dip galvanizing) is no reason for rejection, on the
condition that the top layer thickness remains above
the indicated minimum value.

The specification of those thicker top layers must

first be agreed between the hot dipped galvanizing
plant and client to specify how they should be reached (e.g. shot blasting, chemical composition of the
steel).

* It is possible to arrange a non-standard guarantee

certificate, if requested in advance, but such will
incur added costs.

47

Extract of quality requirements for applying

powder-coating systems
48

2. Scope of application
These requirements apply to hot dipped galvanized
products and products made from continuously
galvanized plate and wide plate, which must be
provided with an organic top coating after
galvanization and/or composition.
These products should be galvanized per EN ISO
1461.

The pretreatment of the zinc surface should be done

by a:
chemical pretreatment or
mechanical processing or
mechanical processing following by chemical
processing

7. Coating system
7.2.4. Powdercoating system

5. Zinc layer and zinc surface

5.2 Quality and inspection of zinc layer
The requirements of the zinc layers and hot dipped
galvanized products are covered by EN ISO 1461,
chapters 8 through to 10.
Any present sharp points, zinc droplets, zinc ashes,
foam residues from flux etc. must be prevented as
much as possible, or removed as effectively as
possible before the paint system is applied.
A thickened spot is allowed, on the condition that it
isnt sharp and not disturbing or injurious to the
intended use of the product. The criterion is that no
disturbing effects may be visible without visual tools
from a distance of three metres.

Remark 1
This doesnt apply to those unevennesses of
galvanized steel that are inherent to the
galvanization process making the appearance less
tight and smooth; these unevennesses are not
regarded as distortion (see EN ISO 1461).

Powder coatings are usually applied by means of

electrostatic spraying and then stoved. The stoving
process makes the powder flow to become a paint
layer, which is then cured. The stoving temperature
(object temperature) therefore may not exceed 225 C.

8. Inspection of the paint coating system

8.5.2 Layer thickness
For all types of paints, the dry layer thickness should
correspond the specifications of the paint supplier,
unless agreed otherwise.
The layer thickness is indicated by the average.
This refers to the average of 10 measurements
evenly distributed over the surface area in view.
The average layer thickness for powdercoating
systems:
1st layer: on average 80 m, minimum 60 m.
2nd layer: on average 120 m, minimum 90 m.
Under medium to highly corrosive circumstances, a
minimum of a two-layer system must be applied for
powder coatings.

Raised welds may be ground until they are smooth.

Small, sharp protrusions caused by rolled-in steel
chips must be rounded off using abrasive linen.

6. Pretreatment of zinc surface

6.1 Objective of the treatment
The objective of the treatment is to remove
impurities and promote the bond of the coating
system.

* It is possible to arrange a non-standard guarantee

certificate, if requested in advance, but such will
incur added costs.
