Round 1
The City of Merritt is pleased to an-
nounce the first round of the Clash of the
Talents on Saturday, 28 July, 3-7pm in
Spirit Square.
Come out and support local talent
and enjoy an evening of entertainment,
the downtown atmosphere, local shops
and event vendors, and vote for your
favourite contestant. There is even an
added bonus: after the contest an open
jam session will happen to continue with
the spirit of entertainment in Merritt.
Burst-Into-Site and the City are host-
ing a 6-week talent competition, the first
time our community has ever held a
multiple day multiple venue talent con-
test. There is a guaranteed prize cash
pool of $3000: 1st place $1700; 2nd place
$850; and 3rd place $450. entry fee is $10
per act.

Desert Daze festival
In its 3rd year, the Desert Daze Festi-
val in Spences Bridge supports local tal-
ent and celebrates rural life. Aside from
a jam-packed musical line-up, Desert
Daze showcases delicious Okanagan

The festival kicks off with an Aboriginal
welcome ceremony with hand-drum-
ming and singing on Friday, August 17th

Merritt man dies in
fatal fall
The BC Coroners Service confirmed
that 51-year old Merrittonian Steven
Robert Thomas was the man who died
on July 18, after he fell from a cliff near
Hope. He was attempting to photograph
a waterfall just off the Coquihalla High-
way on July 17, when he fell from the
cliff and sustained a fatal head injury. He
was transported by air to Royal
Columbian Hospital in critical condition,
but was unable to recover from his in-
juries and died the following day.
Police said he left his vehicle by the
side of the road 30km north of Hope
about 10am Tuesday. He lost his footing
and fell 10 metres. The BC Coroners
Service continues to investigate this
death. On behalf of the family, the BC
Coroners Service asks that the media re-
spect their privacy at this difficult time.
Bike Rally
police report
Merritt RCMP were out in numbers
over the weekend with a few extra offi-
cers from other communities to assist
with the exxpected numbers from the
Great Canadian Bike Rally.
Members on foot and bike patrols
downtown during the day found most
people to be friendly and having a good
time despite the heat. And they found
that the evening crowds were for the
most part just as well behaved.
Police responded to approximately
250 files over the weekend. 40 people
found themselves in custody and there
were several violation tickets and warn-
ings issued. No impaired drivers were
charged by general duty members and
no accidents resulted from the events.
There were several roadside prohibi-
tions due to drinking and drugs but with
the road checks set up over the weekend,
police found that the majority were ac-
cessing local transit or designated driv-
ers. All in all, the patrons were very
respectful of the community.
Cents raise $1500
On Friday, July 13th, the Merritt Cen-
tennials hosted their first annual Charity
Golf Tournament at the Merritt Golf &
Country Club. The event was a huge suc-
cess, and raised $1500 for Ronald Mc-
Donald House BC.
Among the current players in atten-
dance were Brendan Lamont, Tyler Steel,
Payton Schaefer, Brent Fletcher and Se-
bastien Pare. Among the alumni were
Kevin Rabbitt, Paul Barnes, Rich Brew,
Todd Fletcher, Pat Rabbitt, Bobby Ver-
mette, Rob Boyd and our current GM &
Head Coach Luke Pierce - who played
for the Cents from 2001-03.
Organizers would like to thank
Nicola Motorsports, NV Outdoors, Pest
Detectives and Kruger Foods, as well as
everyone for their generous contribu-
tions of silent auction prizes and game
prizes. Lastly, we would like to thank our
