Manufacturing Process
The manufacturing process is the means of transforming raw
materials into consumer goods through various stages, but what
is the environmental impact of this cycle of mass production?

Environmental Impact
The following info graphic highlights five key areas that link the
manufacturing process to environmental iniquity. These five areas are:

Waste

Air Pollution

Soil Pollution

Energy & Resource

Consumption

Water
Consumption

Key
Source Materials

Pre-Production

Assembly

Packaging & Transport.

Sale & Use

Recycle

Landfill

*Please note that many aspects contribute to each of the following environmental
offenses, and not every manufacturing process is solely responsible for the fact given.

The Bright Side

Greater transparency and a concerted effort on behalf of
manufacturers has helped corporations to identify these unsustainable
manufacturing practices. As more companies begin to develop processes
that offset hazardous environmental impact, as well as innovate toward
more sustainable production we will see these scary numbers reducing,
and the acceptance of more sustainable solutions growing.

WASTE
Landfill Impact
In an average lifetime, an American
produces enough garbage to cover the
entire US continent one inch deep in trash.
Thats roughly the height of this paragraph.

Recycle Me Not
80% of the items found in landfills could
have been recycled, but instead were not.

Other

Food Scraps

Yard Trimmings

Durable Goods

Non-Durable
Goods

*Goods with a 3
year life span.

*Goods intended
for one use or use
less than 3 years.

Cars, phones,
refrigerators,
batteries, etc.

Containers
& Packaging

Clothing, footwear,
newspaper, plastic
cups, etc.

AIR CONTAMINATION

1.2 Million

people die every year from urban air pollution.

Breathe Deep

million

The average adult consumes 3,000

gallons of polluted air every day.

Respiratory Infections
60% of respiratory infections
are linked to the environment.

Lost in the Haze

Increased levels of air pollution interfere
with flower pollinators (such as bees).
Multiple studies have shown that when
there's thick smog present, a flowers scent
is modified to such an extent that the
pollinators aren't attracted to it. This has
led to a decline in certain plant species
in many industrial regions of the world.

SOIL POLLUTION
Touchdown
If the US were to bury all the trash it
produced in one year that hole would be
100 miles deep and the size of a football
field, from end zone to end zone.

One Time Use

The US produces 11.9 million tons of
plastic packaging and over 90% of
this goes into landfills after being
used only once.

Land Pollution
Land pollution causes us to lose 24
billion tons of top soil every year.

Tainted Soil
Tainted soil (chromium, lead, pesticides, benzene, arsenic) = Tainted
plants and Animals = Tainted food.

ENERGY & RESOURCE CONSUMPTION

Prescription Hot Spot
Rainforest are home to of the Worlds
estimated species. This biodiverse hot spot
also gives us 121 prescription drugs; derived from rainforest species.

Rainforest Depletion
Rainforests used to cover 14% of the earth
and now they cover a mere 6% with the
possibility of completely being consumed
in less than 40 years.

Resource Depletion
Copper, iron ore, magnesium, phosphate
rock, potash, rare earth metals, tin, titanium
and zinc have all been extensively mined
and are declining resources.

Unequal Oil Distribution

70% of the United States consumption
of oil is solely for transportation.

WATER CONSUMPTION

Water
Contamination,
Where is it coming from?

Maritime Transportation: 10%

Farm Runoff: 20%

Industrial Waste: 10%

Oil Pollution
1 Quart of motor oil
can pollute 250,000
gallons of water.

Rubbish: 5%
Offshore Oil: 5%

Air Pollutants: 20%

Industrial Dump
70% of industrial wastes
are dumped untreated into
developing countries waters.

Sewage: 30%

Toxic water!
46% of Americas lakes are
too polluted for fishing,
swimming or aquatic life.
