Routine 1

Setup:
Three predictions (in folded index cards): 1. There will be 23 face down cards 2. 16 of the cards are black cards 3. All the remaining cards are HEARTS on the back: except the 4 of diamonds Giant coin in back left belt loop 2 big sponge bunnies in left pocket, 5 small sponge bunnies in right pocket Half dollar in right small pocket Deck of cards set up for Shuffleboard in back left pocket Shuffled deck of cards in back right pocket

Begin with predictions in hand, Shuffleboard deck on table Good evening ladies and gentleman, my name is Richard Yan and my segment begins with a mystery. This is a packet of three index cards and Look intently on one person I dont know why, but I trust you. Youre going to have the most important job in the show. Hand the predictions to a spectator on the edge of the audience Your job is to make sure nobody touches those index cards except you. Especially not me, I cant touch them until the end. Ok? Now give me one of them back. Ah I can already see youll be good at this (or: No, you gotta be careful. Nobody can touch them except you) Along with those, I have a deck of playing cards. I would like for these cards to be shuffled. Take out cards, spread and split at the 4 of diamonds. Hand each packet to two spectators (not next to each other) ___ could you take this half? And ___ could you take this half? Throughout this entire routine, I want you to shuffle those cards and keep shuffling until the end. Magic can be done with everything around us, things that were familiar with, and things that we are not Pull out half dollar. Now this isnt a quarter or a dime, its a half dollar. But regardless, its real money and you can examine it for yourself. This is a Kennedy half-dollar. Its got John F. Kennedy on the front and an eagle on the back. If you look closely, you can see that in one claw, its holding

an olive branch, , and in the other, a set of arrows. This shows that America stands for peace and freedom and we will fight to defend it wherever there is oil. Is it good? Ok. Play around with the coin, classic palm vanish The classic thing for a magician to do with a coin is to make it vanish, right? Reveal vanish But of course, you know its really not gone, they just hide it in their sleeve. Produce from sleeve But what if they have a short sleeve shirt? Then you cant really do that. So in this case, a lot of magicians like to hide it in their skin. French drop > Produce from skin Of course there are many other hiding places for example augh haguha haugh in your mouth Retention vanish > Produce from mouth (Optional) And of course the classic pulling it from your ear. French drop > Produce from spectators ear But what a lot of people seem to think is that we hide coins in our other hand. Thats not the case because see, you can make it vanish from here and its not in the other hand. In this case its actually in my shoe. Spider vanish > Produce from shoe, load big coin in left hand But the real secret is that the coin is small and hard to see. So next time you see a magician do coin tricks. Classic palm vanish to produce big coin. Let spectators examine it. Magic can be done with familiar things, but it can also be done with something unfamiliar. Pull out 2 big sponge bunnies Here I have two sponge rabbits. This one is mama rabbit and this one is papa check underneath the rabbit yeah this is papa rabbit. I have to keep them far apart though, cuz you know rabbits ___, which one would you like? Mama or papa? You want Mama rabbit? Ok I want you to take her, and squeeze her really right in your hand like this. Now watch I simply snap my fingers and open your hand they switched places! Now I have mama rabbit and you have papa rabbit!

Stand back for applause. If no applause: You dont seem impressed. If applause: *chuckle* You guys will clap for anything (cont.) Well alright, so I have papa rabbit... check underneath yeah definitely papa rabbit. Im going to squeeze him really tight in my hand again and I want you to squeeze mama rabbit super tight in your hands as well. Push through vanish > Load in their hand Im gonna squeeze mama rabbit so small that she looks like this you dont believe me? No look, Im not kidding. And look *kuh* drop it into their hand open up your hand. Allow reaction > Load 5 small bunnies Heres something even weird. Now can you hold both bunnies in your hand really really tight? Load all the bunnies in their hand Watch this, give a few seconds. Do you know what happens when you put mama and papa rabbit together in the same hand? Check it out open your hand. Allow reaction. Pull out regular deck Im shown you magic with something familiar and also something unfamiliar. Now let me show you something unfamiliar with something familiar. First, would anyone like to shuffle this deck? Hand out deck to be shuffled Ok, youre satisfied? Awesome. ____, could you please take any card out of the deck that you want. Look at that card, show everyone else but do not show me. Allow them to see the selection. Get a pink break above bottom card. Swing cut top half into left hand. Alright and when youre done, could you place it right in here? Thank you. Were gonna shuffled this deck up a bit more, losing your card in the middle of it. False cut and shuffle, retaining the selection 2nd from the top. What Im gonna try to do is cut right to your card. Swing cut and hold small break. Ill cut right there. Cut and place top packet on the table. Now I may be off by a bit, so give me like a 5 card range. But Im certain your card is just about where I cut. Reverse count 5 cards, turn packet face up on the deck. Now I still dont want you to reveal your card, so Im

just going to scroll through these five cards and youll tell me if your card is in there. But dont give it away when you see it. Alright? Biddle count, load 2nd card to the bottom of the packet. So its in there? Awesome. But I still have to find which one it is. Its no fun for me to just pull it out though, so here. ____, could you put your hands firmly on this packet? And ___ could you put your hands firmly on top of the deck? Make sure I cant take anything out of your hands or put anything in. Watch, Im gonna take one card out invisibly, throw it into the air you see it?.... and itll land right into the deck. ___ turn those cards over is your card still in there? Weird isnt it? ____ could you spread out the deck? And look in the middle is one card... Your ______! Set that deck aside Ive shown you magic with something familiar and something unfamiliar. Ive shown you something unfamiliar with something familiar. Now Im going to show you something so familiar that its unfamiliar You familiar with that? Its called the mind. A very underestimated tool. The mind has an incredible ability to predict. Its not always right, but its still very impressive. And thats exactly what Ive done today. ____ and ____ youve been shuffling those cards since the very beginning right? Theres no doubt theyre in total chaos. But were gonna make it even more chaotic. I want you both to cut off half your packet and flip it face up. Now watch, were gonna do something crazy switch the face up packets Im gonna give you this one and you this one. I want you to keep the face up cards face up and the face down cards facedown and shuffle them into each other. Now theyre even more chaotic. To finish it off, well shuffle them into each other. Turn over the non-key packet and shuffle into each other. Spread the cards, find the side with the 4 of diamonds and turn that side face down But with the power of the mind, we can find something incredible from this chaos. You see, the three index cards ____ have been holding are three predictions. ___, could you please remove the clip and open up the first prediction. Read in a loud and clear voice what it says on the lined side of the card. *they read prediction* So twenty three cards are face down. Well lets see Count the face down cards But wait look! Open the second prediction and read loudly what it says on the lined side! *they read prediction* Sixteen black cards! Count black cards No wait! Hold your applause the final prediction please read loudly what it says on the lined side. *They read prediction* And all the rest of the cards are hearts! Name every heart, stopping at the last four of diamonds

And four of dai-monds Well this is quite. Unfamiliar to me. Oh! But wait!.... Turn over the 3rd prediction and read what it says turn over prediction except the four of diamonds! Tonight weve explored the familiar and unfamiliar. But one thing you should be familiar with now is the magic of Richard Yan.

Routine 2 (Impromptu card routine)

Before I begin, would anybody like to shuffle this deck of cards? Hand deck out to be shuffled Satisfied? Ok From a shuffled deck of cards, there are many possibilities for interesting things. Cards have many curious abilities that most people arent aware of. My favorite example of is using the cards as a lie detector. You see, sometimes cards are better at detecting deception than polygraph. Here, lemme show you. Pick any card youd like. Have card selected, get a pinky break below top two cards Have you memorized it? Ok. Well place it back into the deck. And now Im gonna take a couple cards, doesnt really matter how much. Randomly spread off a packet of cards. Really count off 9 cards So Im going to ask you a series of questions. On each question you can either lie or tell the truth. Alright? So first question, what is the value of your card? Remember, you can lie or tell the truth. Six? Ok, well spell out your card. S-I-X Deal one card for each letter of the value they name. Place the rest on top Now itd be six OF something right? So well spell that out, O-F. Deal two cards for O-F. Place the rest on top Now six of what? What was the suit? Remember you can lie or tell the truth. Hearts? Ok so H-E-A-R-T-S Deal one card for each letter of the suit they name. Place the rest on top Heres your final question. On that last question, did you lie or tell the truth? Now remember, you can lie or tell the truth about lying or telling the truth. If they say lied: So you lied? Alright, L-I-E-D Deal four cards, place the rest on top If they say truth: You told the truth? T-R-U-T-H Deal five cards, put the rest on top of the deck You see, no matter how much you lie, the truth will always come out on top. Flip over top card, reveal selection Of course, you can find a card this way too, but magician prefer to use our own skills when performing for an audience. For example, ____, pick any card youd like. Show it to yourself

and the rest of the audience but not to me. Have you got it? Alright, place it back in the deck and well shuffle it up really well, losing it into the middle. Control selection to the bottom In fact, were gonna mix it up even more like this. Face up to face down, so it becomes a big mess. Sloppy shuffle it, putting the bottom card face down on top and turn it over. There are cards face down, cards face up, cards back to back, its just all over the place. But watch with just a wave of my hand over the deck did you see that? All the cards turn back facing the same way. Every card except one. Luckily for me, that is your _____. Reveal triumph and selection The thing is though, that time you picked a card right? You pulled it out and some people will think I couldve manipulated it. So how about this, I dont want a card to be picked, I just want the chosen card to be an idea. So anyone, just name a card for me. Eight of diamonds? Alright well find the eight of diamonds Spread through the deck, cull the named card to the top You know, it doesnt seem to be in here. Spread the deck, hiding the selection. Cull the three other cards of the same value to the top See? Its not quite in here because its in your ear! Pull nothing of someones ear. Im just kidding! That trick would be impossible. But ok, enough joking around, lemme show you something better. Ill take out a couple random cards Take out two random contrasting cards, while culling two aces on top. Ok so we have the 4 of hearts and the queen of spades. Im going to give the queen to you. I want you to hold onto it like this and hold tight. Dont turn it over. Whatever you do dont turn it over. Alright? just dont do it. Nonchalantly place the other indifferent card under the two aces on top. No what card do you think you have? Not the queen? Well look at it. It is the queen. See? You should trust me! Alright here, you have the queen and I have the four. Triple lift to show the four. Im going to take the four and switch it real fast! And Im going to switch it again! Look you still have the queen. See heres what I did in slow motion. Switch the cards, turn the queen face up above the card theyre now holding. Now I have the queen. Now without looking, what do you think that card is?

Top change You think thats the four? Would you bet that thats the four and thats the queen? Or thats the queen and thats the four? Ok, well flip them over. After reaction, place indifferent cards on the bottom of the deck, leave the aces. In fact here, for last trick lets get the other two aces out here. Could you examine these cards, make sure theyre normal? Get a break under the four top cards Which ace would you say is your favorite? Spades? Its funny cuz every likes to pick spades. Put their favorite aces on the bottom of the face up pile and do a 4-for-4 switch. Take off four cards, and secretly load a fifth. So were gonna take your favorite ace here. Can you see it ok? Set up the Impossible Twist change Watch. Just a simple up and down shake and it changes into your Eight of Daimonds. But thats not the only card that changes all four cards are now eights. Reveal kicker. Hold cards next to your face. To clean up, place on top of the face up deck.
