Thomas Adams was hired by a This was a resin that came from the Mexican exile named Antonio Mastic tree. to develop a new form of rubber The Mayan Indians of Central that contained chicle, since chicle America chewed a natural gum was plentiful in Mexico. Antonio called chicle that they derived from thought that Adams could make trees. American Indians chewed a synthetic rubber tires out of the natural gum-like resin that came new material. Adams tried to use it to make things like toys, masks, rain boots and bicycle tires; even though he failed in every attempt, he still became a huge success. One day he decided to chew a piece of the chicle, and then he added flavoring to it. In the process, he created the modern chewing gum. Soon after, he began selling pieces of his gum for a penny each World record setting bubble gum bub- and then he patented the machine that made it. ble is 23 inches in diameter. By Paul Niemann 2012

There are a few other pieces of gum trivia that are worth mentioning: The very first patent issued for chewing gum went to a dentist named William Semple in 1869, the same year that Adams created his chewing gum. Maybe Semple was the original fifth dentist you know, the one who didnt recommend Trident to his patients?!? The first bubble gum was created by Frank Fleer in 1906. If that names sounds familiar, its because his company makes the Fleer trading cards. A Fleer employee named Walter Diemer made bubble gum pink

because pink was the only color that he had left. And if you just cant get enough of this gum trivia, heres one more: The largest bubble ever blown was 23 inches in diameter, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. What ever happened to Thomas Adams boss, the Mexican exile named Antonio? Before he moved to New York, Antonio served as a general in the Mexican army; in fact, he was also a former president of Mexico. There was something else for which he is remembered. You know him by his first name, but history knows him by his last name Santa Anna, as in

Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. He was the general who led the attack on the Alamo! Thomas Adams company went on to merge with the nations six other largest chewing gum makers, building a monopoly in the process. Today the company is known as Cadbury Adams, which is a division of Cadbury Schweppes. What happened to Adams chicle gum? Did he give his brand of gum a name back then? It turns out that he did name it. The name of Thomas Adams gum, which he began making way back in 1869, is Chiclets. They should mention this kind of stuff in the history books.

Pro Football Hall of Fame

Since opening in 1963, the Pro Football Hall of Fame has grown in size and stature. Improvements and renovations have transformed the original 19,000 square-foot museum into an exciting 85,000 square-foot internationally recognized institution. Currently, the Hall of Fame is undergoing the largest expansion in its history. The Future 50 Expansion & Renovation Project is set to be finished in 2013 in time for the Hall of Fames 50th Anniversary. The completed building will be 118,000 square feet. Today, the Hall of Fame stands as a shining tribute to the men who made professional football Americas most popular sport. Why Canton for the Hall of Fame Site? The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton for three primary reasons; (1) the American Professional Football Association, later renamed the National Football League, was founded in Canton on September 17, 1920. (2) the Canton Bulldogs were an early-day pro football power, even before the days of the NFL. They were also the first two-time champion of the NFL in 1922 and 1923. The great Jim Thorpe, the first big-name athlete to play pro football, played his first pro football with the Bulldogs, starting in 1915. (3) Canton citizens early in the 1960s launched a determined and well-organized campaign to earn the site designation for their city.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL
HISTORY: The Pro Football Hall of Fame concept first was placed before the public by the Canton Repository on December 6, 1959. That newspaper challenged its readers with the headline: PRO FOOTBALL NEEDS A HALL OF FAME AND LOGICAL SITE IS HERE. Canton civic groups quickly took up the challenge and a formal bid was made to the NFL for acceptance of Canton as the site for a pro football hall of fame. Three months later, Canton was granted this official site approval. Wooded parkland was donated from the city and ground-breaking for the original construction was held on August 11, 1962, and on September 7, 1963, the building was first opened to the public. For the past 48 years, the annual enshrinement of football players, coaches and contributors into the Pro Football Hall of Fame has been celebrated each summer during the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festivals 18 diverse events over nearly two weeks and is enjoyed by 700,000 people. The laws of contraction and expansion

the point of buying groceries and cooking when two can eat out so cheaply (I justified to myself)? A n d then the kids came home from college. Not only did they bring home By Mary Beth bags of Weisenburger food from their dorm and apartment, they also brought home new tastes. We suddenly needed to stock things like coffee creamer, a certain kind of juice with green tea, 1% milk and celery. Wham! The once-sparsely furnished refrigerator needed an overhaul, and we are now stuffing it to the gills on a weekly basis. And since the kids eat out some, too, we need to constantly shove things around, compile contents of Tupperware containers (leftover spaghetti in a bowl with the leftover steak? Why not!) and generally create death-defying pyramids of bottles and jars to make room for the Styrofoam restaurant boxes. Its a problem. And I havent even touched on the challenge of finding space in our little freezer. (I sold the chest freezer last September, remember?!) Well just have to quickly eat that family-size box of waffles that is getting crushed in the freezer door. My refrigerators and freezers clearly need expansion joints. So do my washer and dryer, which have been able to keep up easily over the past monthsthey even got a few days off every week! But now they are rocking and rolling and running up my electric bill on a 3-times-daily basis. Theyre exhausted. The bathrooms are also too small, theres not enough room in the

I recently read an article about a local bridge that needs replacing because its expansion joints did not pass inspection. Expansion joints are those manmade gaps in slabs of concrete that allow the material to contract and expand with temperature and other conditional variations (sort of like my waistline does with my stress level variations). Ive been thinking about expansion joints and I have decided that my house could use a few of those, too. Especially right now. The first place I would put an expansion joint is in my refrigerator. For the majority of the past nine months, my husband and I have been empty-nesters. The grocery bill was cut in half, the fridge was emptied of junk food and we ate out. A lot. Whats

garage for all of our vehicles, and the dishwasher is working overtime, too. Our bath towel supply is running ragged, and every time I turn around I am replacing rolls of toilet paper. The dogs have lost weight because there are no longer any scraps available and they are forced to eat actual dog food. Of course it will all need to contract again in late August when the kids return to school. Food supplies will dwindle, the washer will make its way back to its cor-

ner, and my electric bill will return from the stratosphere. Everything that had been stretched to capacity over the summer will breathe a collective sigh of relief, and go back to its normal size. Everything, Im sure, except my waistline.

The long road back: A progress report on the economic recovery

It was just four years ago when investors faced their most dramatic challenge of recent times. In September 2008, Lehman Brothers collapsed and other financial giants were teetering on the edge of a similar fate. The government stepped in with the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP) and the bailout helped avoid a deeper crisis. Yet investors paid a price. A severe bear market would see stocks (valued by broad measures like the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500) lose more than half of their value in a period of 18 months. A recession also took hold in 2008, the most severe America has seen since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Two of the most notable aspects of the economic slide that impacted Americans were the housing market bust and the unemployment rate rising above 10 percent. Economic Growth The economy slipped into a recession in the summer of 2008, declining at an annualized rate of almost nine percent in the fourth quarter of that year, according to statistics from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Positive economic growth did not return until mid-2009 and the recovery has remained modest since. The U.S. economy grew by three percent in 2010 but just 1.7 percent last year, and started this year with an annualized growth rate of about two percent. when the Case-Shiller Home Price Composite U.S. Index peaked. By 2008, it had fallen dramatically, and nationally home values continued to decline through 2011, losing on average one-third of their value. Foreclosure levels remain high, and the housing market is not expected to show significant strength anytime soon. Investment Markets In September 2008, the Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at 10,850, already down about 25 percent from its peak less than a year earlier. It would proceed to dip to 6,547 by March, 2009. Since then the Dow has steadily recovered much of that lost ground, reaching above 13,000 in recent months before retreating somewhat in light of political and economic turmoil in Europe. The performance of individual stocks, mutual funds, ETFs or other investments varies. Bond markets have been stronger performers in that same time period. When the financial crisis hit in September 2008, the yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note stood at 3.82 percent. It has dropped well below two percent in 2012, and lower yields mean higher values for existing bonds. So the slow pace of economic recovery has actually benefited the bond market in recent times. The road from here Weve come a long way from the crisis environment that existed in 2008. While the economy and investors are still feeling the impact, it is also notable that both

have shown tremendous resiliency. Despite moving in fits and starts, the U.S. economy has managed to avoid another recession since 2009 and stocks have gradually recovered much of the ground that was lost during the meltdown. More challenges may lay ahead, with Europes debt problems and worries over the slowing pace of economic expansion in China and other places looming over the global marketplace. But our experience since 2008 demonstrates why a patient, long-term approach to investing may be the most effective way to react to challenges facing the economy, no matter how severe they are. For advice on investing, consider working with a financial professional.

BAKE -FREE DESSERT IDEAS FOR SUMMER

(StatePoint) Nobody likes working in front of a hot oven during the summer. But if you and your family love desserts, youll still want to partake of sumptuous treats that will keep you all cool. According to top dessert experts, theres a whole world of alternatives to baking for those who suffer from a year-round sweet tooth. On hot days, my mind usually turns to frozen treats such as popsicles or sorbet; for something a bit more elegant I'll whip up a chocolate ganache tart with cookie crust, says Lindsay Landis, author of the new book, The Cookie Dough Lovers Cookbook. Landis has created over fifty recipes using egg-free cookie dough that is safe to eat raw. By repurposing your favorite desserts for the summer season, you can take the need for heat out of the equation. For example, if you love pie, consider a graham cracker, whipped cream and candied fruit based dessert that can be created in minutes and served cold. And dont forget that one of the best things about summer is the abundance of fresh fruit. No matter what you come up with, adding a garnish of exotic fresh fruits like kiwi, pineapple and mango will wow your guests with a boost of natural sweetness. Or create a parfait of frozen yogurt, fresh strawberries and a variety of nuts. For a bit of inspiration, try out this perfect no-bake summer treat from Landis:

Add vanilla. Place 1/2 tablespoon chocolate chips in the bottom of each of four 1/3-cup ice-pop molds or small paper cups. Top each with milk mixture. Insert sticks and place molds in freezer. Freeze until solid, at least 3 hours. To release pops, run molds under warm water 20 to 30 seconds; they should slide right out. If using paper cups, simply peel cups away and discard. If your ice-pop mold does not include built-in sticks or a lid to hold them in place, you may find yourself with sticks

pointing every which way but up. To prevent this, stretch a layer of plastic wrap over the top of the mold and secure it with a rubber band. Cut a small slit in the plastic, centered over each pop, and insert a stick through each opening. Alternatively, you can adjust sticks as necessary after about 45 minutes of freezing, when the pops arent yet frozen solid. For more no-bake dessert ideas, visit www.cookiedoughlovers.com.
