Unloading valves Introduction

Fluid Power

General Unloading valves are designed specifically for two pump Hi-Lo circuits. Just as an automobile transmission shifts gears to provide either high torque or high speed, the unloading valve allows a Hi-Lo circuit to shift from high volume (low pressure) to high pressure (low volume). This is particularly useful when high pressure is required for only a small portion of total cycle time.

Unloading valves can provide: Horsepower Savings Less Heat Generation High Speed High Force Reduced Component Cost

Types and Operation

Type Description Output from both pumps (P1 & P2) is combined giving maximum flow at low pressure. As load pressure increases to setting of the unloading section, the high volume pump flow (P1) is unloaded directly to tank at minimum pressure drop. The high pressure pump (P2) supplies system with required high pressure-low flow. Built-in relief limits maximum pressure of the high pressure pump (P2) to limit force and protect the system.

Unit Will Operate On Open Or Closed Center Hydraulic Systems Use and operation This one-of-a-kind fully hydraulic pressure intensifier was designed specifically for high pressure, low volume applications, such as holding clamping cutting crimping molding or for hydraulic power tools. It holds high pressure continuously and automatically makes up for any leakage in the system. The automatic reciprocation feature results in no loss of pressure while holding, cutting or clamping. The Unloading Relief is an adjustable pressure relief valve which will dump the high pressure side of the circuit to tank when the high pressure reaches relief setting. When the unloading relief begins opening, the high pressure then works on a larger area on the piston, thus requiring less pressure to hold the relief open than to start opening it. As a result, pressure in the HP line (to the tool) reaches relief setting and then drops off to approximately 70 bar. (When this occurs, the intensifier section continues to reciprocate without increasing pressure in the tool.) This unloading feature can be felt by the operator through the control lever on the handle, indicating that the maximum pressure has been reached. The Handle incorporates a holding feature. This enables the operator to stop the tool at any position by just releasing the lever. By releasing the lever (without depressing it in the opposite direction) port A will be blocked and flow will stop. With no flow through the orifice in the direction control valve spool, pressure will equalize on the two ends of the spool, permitting the spring to shift it and divert system flow to tank. Likewise, the dump valve will open the path from the HP port to Low Tank. Pressure will be trapped in the tool by the check valve and retract valve. When the lever is depressed in the retract direction, the retract valve is opened allowing the return spring in the tool to retract the plunger, forcing the oil therein through the Low Tank port.
