Automation Paradox
Alejandro Areiza German Torres Palencia

Abstractthe article talks about problems that humanity is having nowadays with the automation. The automation is a paradox just because some people think it is better for humanity to use computers and automated based systems than people who can perform these tasks. Some errors were not made at all by the system, but in some cases the error was made by humans. They are trying to solve if it is better for aeronautics to use automation systems or if it is better to let all the control to the pilots. There are different opinions about these, but they said that the if the automation systems failed there should always by a person that should be trained on knowing how to react in a state of emergency and that this person must have the knowledge on how to solve the issue and how to handle the situation. What I think about this is that in recent years as the technology advance and there are more automated systems for people to use, we have let out the option of knowing basic thinks that we should and we let a machine do it for us, in some cases if this machines doesnt have the correct usage and the needed maintenance they may failed. Is as easy as this people does not know how to solve a simple square root they let the calculator solve it, and what they dont know is that the calculator could failed for some many reasons, the weather, they are low of battery and some other, in this case it is a situation that only involves you and it could be bad for you because not knowing how to make a square root could make you reprove an exam, but this is not tragic for other people, but in other automated systems, like the navigation systems that the airplanes have, if the system has an error and you dont know how to react and handle it could be lethal, for all the passengers that are on the plane that without knowing are giving they lives to a person that is not well trained and doesnt know how to react in a panic situation. II. REVIEW Based on the article of the Automation Paradox1 and the other article What Really Happened Aboard Air France 447 2 makes me think if making more automation systems is good for mankind or not, it let me the sensation that every step for technology makes people more lazy and with less willing to learn. People may be asking why they should want to learn how to add if a calculator and a computer can make it for them, they dont want to learn the things that a machine can do for them, but they dont think what if the machine makes a mistake and could be harmful for many others. What happened in the airplane 447 is not just about the navigation system, it was an error of all the cabin crew members, they did not pay full attention on what the airplanes system was telling them, this just shows that as the technology advances people does not want to learn, if the pilots and copilots of this airplane were paying attention and knowing what they need to know and how to handle the situation this tragedy could have been avoided. The point is that what the airline said is that the pilots were trained for handling this type of situations, but they never had been in a real situation like this, so they didnt know what the system was advising. The navigation system was advising that there was an error and it was time for the pilots to take the control of the airplane because the system was not able to continue, the pilots didnt knew that and thought that the system was still operating, when they realized that there autopilot was off and that they needed to took the control of the plane it was too late and the plane ended crashing in the ocean. With all these information I may think that the problems are not with the automated systems, because they are doing what they are program to do, they cannot do any other thing, they may failed and make mistakes, but this is because we dont know how to use them, they are in extreme situations as the weather conditions and they have not receive the correct maintenance. In order to have less problems with automation systems people should be trained on how they work, what they are supposed to do, and the basic maintenance, if the people who used frequently these systems know these important information problems with automation systems should be less. What we can see nowadays is that the automation systems

I. INTRODUCTION

HIS article talks about the automation paradox and may let you thinking if it is better for all humankind the automated based systems or just having people instead of them. The automated navigation systems in airplanes are very useful and are letting the pilot pay attention to some many other things that just following the route and controlling the plane, but all this technology and comfort just make me ask these question how good is the comfort of the pilot, leaving in his hands the life of the passengers?

Universidad Santo Tomas Automatizacin Automation Paradox Review have make hard and harmful jobs for humans very easy and not dangerous, there is no way to think that they are a problem, they are an excellent tool for all. The article also mention than before some automated systems were implemented they were more accidents and deaths, but they were not mentioned, because what we think is that humans can make mistakes, but machines cannot. And another think all humans have is the Lake Wobegon effect that is thinking and feeling that you are over the average, so if they commercialized the car that can drive by itself by only entering the route on a GPS and you have an accident, many people are going to said that that accident could be avoided if they were driving, because they are the best drivers of the world, without knowing that the computer and the automated systems could drive better than them. So this paradox about if the automation systems are good or not could only be solve by educating people on how to handle the systems how to work with them so that they are not going to be broken easily, also letting them know that the systems is going to do what they are ordering him to do, he cannot do any different things, if they enter a wrong command he is not going to do anything because he could not understand what you entered and is going to let you know in some way, it could be with a sound, a light or with any sign that the information is not correct, or that he is having a problem and that they need a person to intervene, think and solve the issue so that they can continue with their work. This paradox could end if we know to handle the automated systems and treat them well, the only thing they are doing is to making easier our lives, they are doing some jobs that people may not want to do, or that in some cases is very difficult, because it requires many concentration and attention, that for many of us is very difficult to have because you can get distracted very easy, for many reasons that could be just because you are not feeling well or your are hungry.

When should this tragedies being demystified of being made by automated system, that people could do repetitive jobs better than machines and how could this been done? Another reasonable way that I see besides the one that the engineers control all the job and the complete machine that the automation system was made for is to educate people that the technology is made for them to make their lives better, easier and happier, in this way people should be familiarized with all automation systems and realize than is some cases machines could do some things better that what we as humans can do. Based on education and good training the automated systems would work perfectly lets hope that one day this could happen, meanwhile lest continue investigating and creating more technology so that the whole world can see that life is good and is better with our friends the automated systems.

III. CONCLUSION What I could conclude after reading and analyzing the 2 first articles and a last one Automated to Death 3 is that in order to stop this myth that automation systems are not good for mankind we should start doing something big, that is that people that know how work with them start working with them and after they can show the world their safety, reliability and reliance train some others on how they can use them in a good way. The best people to work with them are the people who know how the automated systems were built, the engineers. They should took some other courses, the ones that the automation systems were built for, but in this way there is no doubt that the tragedies that are supposed to be made by automated system are going to stop and that we are going to have more happy people using in a good way and without any fear the automation systems that were built for them, to making their lives easier.
