Dear Friends of CaliforniaALL:

The economy continues to spiral downward, and many are using these tough times as a reason not to focus on issues of education and diversity. But I love the saying that tough times never last, but tough people do. These are the times that call for toughness of spirit and action. The focus needs to be more than just the economy. I propose that we focus on what many consider our biggest crisis -- our failure to educate our students in a competitive world and global economy. This morning I attended an Education Summit hosted by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson. The research again validated the shocking numbers of Black and Latino students falling behind and the achievement gap continuing to grow. National speakers shared innovative ideas and best practices and a dialogue between local and statewide leaders occurred about what could happen in Sacramento to change the direction of the education crisis. All of us are talking about what we can do for our children. Can we cure poverty? Probably not. Should we wait until we can cure poverty? If we do, then no action will take place. One of our President/CEO speakers turned the focus by stating that We will never fix poverty until we fix education. Thats Ruthe C. Ashley our answer. We must do what we can to fix education. That means business, government, educators and communities working together to meet the challenge. If we do not, our future is in jeopardy. The workforce needed to step into each of our places will not be available. We cannot wait until the economy turns around or until poverty is conquered. We must do it now. CaliforniaALL needs your help. Our first funded pipeline, the Saturday Academy of Law, graduated its first class on March 7 -50 ninth graders who now have a foundation of critical thinking skills that will continue to be nourished through high school and on. CaliforniaALL needs you to help us fund these kinds of complete pipeline projects. After all, we will need them to be successful as each of us leave those 9-6 jobs to drink mai tais on the beach. Graduates of U.C. Irvines Saturday Academy of Law

SANTA ANA, CAOn Saturday, March 7th, 2009, over 200 guests gathered at the Delhi Community Center to recognize the first graduating class of the UC Irvine Saturday Academy of Law. The six-week program, created by UCIs Center for Educational Partnerships was made possible by a grant from CaliforniaALL and the Verizon Foundation. An inspirational welcome given by Dean Chemerinsky, highlighted the importance of the First Amendment as graduating students proudly understood and captured the message he so eloquently delivered. Each student received a certificate of merit and several outstanding leaders gave testimonials. The program was designed to introduce students to the field of law and strengthen their critical reading and writing skills as well as public speaking. The students demonstrated their newly acquired skills as they gave firm hand shakes and made eye contact with the Dean and their professors while receiving their certificates!

BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Doug Scrivner is general counsel for Accenture, a global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company. He is responsible for all legal support and is also principal counsel to senior leadership and the board of directors and leads the company's legal organization. He also Douglas Scrivner serves as corporate secretary and compliance officer and is a member of Accentures Executive Leadership Team. In addition, he oversees the company's government relations function. Mr. Scrivner has participated and held leadership positions in several educational and professional organizations including the Board of Trustees, University of Denver; the Visiting Committee, Second Century Campaign, University of Denver College of Law; the Board of Visitors, Sanford Institute of Public Policy Duke University, the Arts & Sciences Campaign Committee, Duke University; and the Board of Trustees, Institute for Clinical Social Work, Chicago. Mr. Scrivner received a bachelor of arts degree in political science and history from Duke University, a master of science degree in international relations from the London School of Economics, and a juris doctorate from the University of Denver College of Law. Maria del Pilar Avila is Vice President of Marketing for Palladium Equity Partners, LLC, one of the largest Hispanic-owned firms in the nation. Ms. Avila focuses on Palladiums strategic marketing initiatives including managing investor relations. Ms. Avila served as founding Executive Director of New America Alliance which focuses on an economic capital agenda including the promotion of American Latino access to private equity/venture capital and the financial industry, the inclusion of Latinos on corporate and pension fund boards, and investment in higher education of American Latinos in the fields of business and finance.

From 1996 to 1999, she served as Vice President of Marketing and Events at the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. In 2006, Ms. Avila was recognized as one of the 20 Most Influential and Outstanding Hispanic Women in Business by Hispanic Trends Magazine and she received the New America Alliance Chairmens Leadership Award in 2004. Ms. Avila earned a Bachelor of Science in Business and Hospitality Management from the University of Central Florida.

CaliforniaALL Recognized for Pipeline Diversity Work

SACRAMENTOThe office of Assemblymember Mike Davis and the law firm of DLA Piper, co-hosted a reception honoring CaliforniaALL on January 27th at the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria. The event highlighted the CaliforniaALL mission and vision to ensure a pipeline of individuals are prepared to successfully lead California's economic and political future. A presentation on the UC Irvines Saturday Academy of Law, which recently received a CaliforniaALL grant, provided guests with a meaningful connection to the work of CaliforniaALL. Guests viewed slides of 9th grade students from the Santa Ana Unified School District enjoying their introductory course to the legal profession. Sharon Ito, News10 (ABC) anchor, served as Mistress of Ceremony for the event.

Staff Updates
Debra Paular Aban has joined CaliforniaALL as the External Affairs Consultant. Ms. Aban is a recognized professional in innovative education, community development , the media and public relations. As Educational Services Manager for the Sacramento Bee, she was responsible for program development, funding, marketing and promotion for the Newspaper in Education program offered to schools throughout Northern California. She created state and national acclaimed programs including Hispanic Heritage sponsored by the Ford Foundation, Get Focused sponsored by Vision Service Plan, Banking on Our Future sponsored by Wells Fargo, and the Weather Wizard program sponsored by News10 (ABC). Ms. Aban spent 25 years with the Sacramento Bee, and most recently, served as managing editor for the Asian Pacific American News & Review newspaper distributed to the Northern and Central Valley regions of California. She was instrumental in the development of several sections including Education, Senior Times, Voices, and Spotlight on Non-Profits. Theresa Garcia, former Assistant Secretary of Education for K-12 in California, has joined the team of CaliforniaALL as an Education Consultant. As Assistant Secretary of Education, she was primary advisor to the Secretary for Education on early childhood and K-12 education policy and served on the state First 5 Commission. Ms. Garcia has worked on K-12 and early education policy in California for the past 15 years and has advised local and statewide agencies and non-profit organizations on public policy and advocacy. She served as Vice President for California Policy for Children Now, a state and national childrens advocacy organization where she handled Education and Health policy projects, grant development, project management, and advocacy.
