Ioun Stones for AD&D, 1st ed.

Ioun stones primarily come from the magical vortices in the Plane of Minerals, grown in magically charged geodes near the Positive Eneregy Plane. They are charged with Positive energy from the Positive Energy Plane. A few come from salt domes near the Negative Material Plane in the Plane of Salt. One or two others come from differing magical locales. There are 144 stones know. 174 total can be used counting 5 maximum for the magic resistance, shield stones, comeliness stones, skill stones, contingency stones, up to 12 ability stones, and up to 5 Grey stones. Grey Ioun stones are burnt out Ioun stones and may be found anuwhere other Ioun stones may be found. Note that any number of stones may be used at once but most duplicates are inactive. In addition, stones orbit user at 1'-3' but can wonder as far as 12', following the aura of the user. They are all AC: -4 HP: 10. Stones drained of power or damaged to the limit of their hit points burn out. These burned out Grey stones continue to "fly" and operate as Grey stones until they are destroyed. Grey stones add 10 psionic strength points to the user per stone per day to a maximum of 50 points at a time. Stones save as hard metal, +3. Stones burn out due to damage, the use of all charges, or maximum use or drainage. Unless otherwise noted, all magical effects are at 20th level. The Stones 1) Barbell, shiny black, two " spheres connected by 1/8" diameter cylinder " long, slightly magnetic. This stone is an exception and comes from gates near to the Demi-Plane of Electromagnetism. User can add or subtract 2 G's of gravity to any touched target. 2d10 charges.

2) Brilliant Cut Diamond with rainbows, (Genie Stone), clear 1" cut diamond shape like an engagement ring diamond, clear with sparkling phtasmagoric rainbows arcing around it. Summons a Jinn 1/week or a Jannkin 1/day.

3) Bucky Ball shape, 1" around, dull night black with white stars moving towards the viewer regardless of angle. (Helm Stone). Acts as a Major Helm. On ship with another helm adds +2 SR. It overides the Minor Helm stone but will not conflict with or overide any other helm. It is immune to most helm bombs or attacks.

4) Three dimensional Cardioid made of pink and blue twisted together. " tall. Heal self or others 1/day.

5) Three dimensional Chiliagon, 1,000 sided solid. Looks like a 1" in diameter golf ball it has so many sides. Every vertice has a plasma jet coming out of it. People are shocked when trying to grab ANY ioun stones obiting around user, 2d6 damage.

6) A 60 degree angle cone 1" tall in medium blue. Detect Poison, as the spell.

7) A Crimson cone, 1" tall, as above, that glows with IR light. Grants Infravision in a 60' range or double normal Infravision. 8) Incandescent red cone 1" tall, as above, Glows red from within like a light bulb all the time. Detect Secret Doors, as the spell. 9) Iridescent blue 1" cone, as above, which has a reflective "butterflywing" shine. Detect Scrying, as the spell. 10) Saffron yellow 1" cone, as above. Know Direction, as the spell. 11) Scarlet (dull) cone 1", as above. Detect Magic, as the spell. 12) Sky blue with white swirls 1" cone, as above. Air Stone, Whirlwind (tornado), as the spell, 3/day. These six Elemental Ioun stones have their own powers but when any two are held, each elemental stone can summon an 2

elemental. Also holding any two of these stones allows summoning a paraelemental or quasi-elemental from the plane inbetween -- i.e. the fire stone and an earth stone allow a magma para-elemental to be summoned. The earth stone and the Postive Energy stone allow a Mineral quasi-elemental to be summoned. Holding all six stones allows for the summoning of any of the six para-elementals, any of the 8 quasi-elementals, or a shadow. Holding all six also allows for the summoning of a Xag-ya, Xeg-Yi, or a Xag-Az. Summoning can occur 1/day per stone or pair of stones in the case or a para or quasi-elemental. 13) Clear connected spheres each " around. User and 200lbs. can become insubstantial for 1 turn, 1d6+1 charges. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals.

14) Black 1" cube. Spell Focus (Enchantment), -1 saves vs. Enchantment spells cast.

15) Black and green 1" cube. Spell Focus (Necromancy), -1 saves vs. Necromancy spells cast. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. 16) Black and red 1" cube. Spell Focus (Transmutation), Transmutation spells cast. -1 saves vs.

17) Black basalt 1" cube. Fire Stone, Stinking Smoke Cloud, as the spell, 3/day. These six Elemental Ioun stones have their own powers but when any two are held, each elemental stone can summon an elemental. Also holding any two of these stones allows summoning a para-elemental or quasielemental from the plane inbetween -- i.e. the fire stone and an earth stone allow a magma para-elemental to be summoned. The earth stone and the Postive Energy stone allow a Mineral quasi-elemental to be summoned. Holding all six stones allows for the summoning of any of the six paraelementals, any of the 8 quasi-elementals, or a shadow. Holding all six also allows for the summoning of a Xag-ya, Xeg-Yi, or a Xag-Az. Summoning can occur 1/day per stone or pair of stones in the case or a para or quasi-elemental. 18) Deep red 1" cube. Spell Focus (Evocation), -1 saves vs. Evocation/Invocation spells cast. 19) Forest green 1" cube. Spell Focus (Abjuration), -1 saves vs. Abjuration spells cast. 3

User is resistant to mind-affecting spells as if user had Wisdom of 20 (attack adjustment is +5). 22) Pale green 1" cube. Spell Focus (Divination), -1 saves vs. Divination spells cast. 23) Pink and green 1" cube. Spell Focus (Illusion), -1 saves vs. Illusion spells cast. 24) Puce 1" cube. Bestows ESP ability at will, read surface thoughts in 30' rg. 25) Silvery mirrored 1" cube. +1 save vs. gaze attacks (Medusa etc.). 26) Vibrating brown topaz " cubotahedron, always feels like it is shaking when touched. (Genie Stone). Summons a Dao 1/month or a Daolani 1/week.

27) Bright silver cylinder, " in diameter, and 1 " long. User and 200lbs. can go ethereal for 1 hr., 2d10 charges.

28) Clear cylinder as above. Enlarge Spell, increase spell range 100% (doubled) 29) Clear cylinder only with half sphere end caps. Otherwise, as above. Grants Eyes of the Hawk, see 20x to 2 miles.

30) Clear blue cylinder, regular flat ends, as up above. Maximize Spell, all spell effects are maximized (and can still be empowered). 31) Clear green cylinder, as above. Heighten Spell, spell is as though one level higher but 9th level spells max. 32) Clear rose cylinder, as above. Empower Spell, all spell effects are one and one half times stronger. 4

33) Incandescent blue cylinder, as above. Glows blue from within like a light bulb all the time. Silent Spell, allows verbal spell components to be silent. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. 34) Lead metal silver cylinder, as above. Earth Stone, Earthquake, as the spell, 3/day. These six Elemental Ioun stones have their own powers but when any two are held, each elemental stone can summon an elemental. Also holding any two of these stones allows summoning a para-elemental or quasi-elemental from the plane inbetween -- i.e. the fire stone and an earth stone allow a magma para-elemental to be summoned. The earth stone and the Postive Energy stone allow a Mineral quasi-elemental to be summoned. Holding all six stones allows for the summoning of any of the six para-elementals, any of the 8 quasi-elementals, or a shadow. Extend Spell, increase spell duration to double normal. 36) Saffron yellow cylinder, as above. Quicken Spell, speeds spellcasting by 50%. 37) Scarlet cylinder, as above. Still Spell, allows somatic (gesture) components to not be needed. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. 38) Clear ditrigonal scalenohedron, " around and 1 " long. Acts as a Periapt of Health.

39) Forest green ditrigonal scalenohedron, as above. Acts as a Periapt of Wound Closure. 40) Brilliant green triangular dipyramid with phtasmagoric lightning bolts arcing around its surface, 1" tall. Positive Energy pulse, 1d8/rd for 1d10 rds 60'rg. 20' radius is as heat metal, 2d6 charges.

41) Clear yellow triangular dipyramid, as above. Zone of Truth, as the spell. 42) Incandescent purple triangular dipyramid, as above. Glows purple from within like a light bulb all the time. See Invisible, as the spell. 43) Pale green triangular dipyramid, as above. Suggestion, as the spell 3/day. 44) Saffron yellow triangular dipyramid, as above. Tongues, as the spell. 45) Salmon pink triangular dipyramid, as above. Acts as a Periapt of Proof Against Poison. 46) Aqua green disk, a cylindrical disk 1" across and only " tall like a thick coin. This disk is actually green with blue streaks and constantly changes like liquid in a disk shaped container. User is immune to pressure and pressure change at any depth and to vacuum.

47) White disk, as above. It is plain solid gloss white. Restore Mind on self or others 1d3 times. 48) Black dodecahedron, ". Negative Plane Protection (Elemental Stone), as the spell, can summon a Xag-Ya with other stones. These six Elemental Ioun stones have their own powers but when any two are held, each elemental stone can summon an elemental. Also holding any two of these stones allows summoning a para-elemental or quasi-elemental from the plane inbetween -- i.e. the fire stone and an earth stone allow a magma paraelemental to be summoned. 49) Blue dodecahedron, ". Protection from Normal Missiles, as the spell. 50) Iridescent blue dodecahedron, ", which has a reflective "butterflywing" shine. Shield, as the spell, -4 to AC to incoming attacks even noncorporal ones. 51) Iridescent green dodecahedron, ", which has a reflective "butterflywing" shine. Entropic Shield, as the spell, any ranged attack has a 20% to miss. 52) Pale green dodecahedron, ". Barkskin, as the spell, +5 armor bonus. 53) Pale lavender dodecahedron, ". Mage Armor, as the spell, +5 to armor. 54) Pale white translucent dodecahedron, ". Acts exactly as Scarab of Protection & blocks ghosts' aging attacks 1use/yr, 24 uses. 55) Purple dodecahedron, ". Teleport without error once per day, 2d10 charges. 56) Scarlet dodecahedron, ". Death Ward, as the spell, protected from death spells and the like. 57) White dodecahedron, ". Positive Plane Protection (Elemental Stone), as the spell, can summon a Xeg-Yi with other stones. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. 59) Deep red and black ellipsoid, 1" long. Adds Combat Reflexes, +1 to hit/parry.

60) Deep green ellipsoid, 1" long. Animal Empathy or +10 to exisiting Empathy. 61) Gold ellipsoid, 1" long. User and 200lbs. can go astral for 1 hr., 2d10 charges. 62) Lavender and green ellipsoid, 1" long. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. Absorbs spells up to 8th level. Absorbs from 20 to 80 spell levels then burns out. 63) Pale lavender ellipsoid, 1" long. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. Absorbs spells up to 4th level. Absorbs from 10 to 40 spell levels then burns out. 64) Pale white translucent ellipsoid, 1" long. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. Dehydration pulse 60' rg. Save or become a desiccated husk. 1d4+2 uses. 65) Rainbow colored ellipsoid, 1" long. User can levitate at will. 66) Damp green emerald cut prism, 1" long. It always has the sensation of being damp when touched. (Genie Stone). Summons a Marid 1/month or a Maridan 1/day.

67) Moonstone half-sphere, 1" around. Lowers Mental AC by 2 to increase protection.

68) Clear pointed hexagonal antiprism or a stretched hexagonal trapezohedron, 3 1/2" long ans " in diameter. It is an Ioun familiar. The Ioun Familiar must be activated as a familiar or it merely acts as a grey stone but gives 20 Psionic strength points (PSP points). Only 50 points can be gained in this way per day so it would take the place of two other grey stones. It has HP: 20 and an AC: -8. When "killed," it goes grey and provides only 10 psionic strength points like any normal grey stone. A further HP: 10 damage at AC: -4 destroys it, just like any grey stone.

69) Rutilated gold hexagonal dipyramid, 2" long. Attack weapon, as level of user. Does 1d6 dam. +3 H&D, 60' rg., it returns after attack. The attack stone has an AC: -10 HP: 20. After burn out or damage it is as a normal Grey stone and keeps flying until it takes another 10 HP to be destroyed. It is AC: -4 as a Grey stone.

70) Brushed titanium Hexagonal Prism, 3" long. (Helm Stone). Acts as Minor Helm, is dormant if Major Helm Ioun stone or another helm is had but still adds +1 SR. It is overridden by a Major Helm stone and will not conflict with or overide any other helm. It is immune to most helm bombs or attacks.

71) Clear hourglass shape with white motes of light inside. 2 " long. This stone is an exception and comes from gates near to the Demi-Plane of Time. User can slow or speed time 10 to 1 so one melee round (six seconds) becomes ten melee rounds (one minute), 2d10 charges.

72) Red icosahedron, 1" tall covered with phantasmagoric flames. (Genie Stone). Summons an Efreeti 1/month or an Efreetikin 1/day.

73) Brass lozenge shape (lens), 1" around. Adds 2d4 +2 HP to user on command, once per day, 2d10 charges.

74) Clear lens lozenge shape (lens), 1" around, as above. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. See minute objects 400x at 7 feet. 75) Pale yellow lozenge shape (lens), 1" around, as above. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. Bestows water walk ability at will. 76) Frosty white octahedron, 1". Grants 1-4 wishes then turns grey. Clear sparkles represent the number of wishes remaining.

77) Gold and clear octahedron, 1". Adds +1 to Comeliness. Up to five duplicates may be used for +5 Comeliness. 78) Pure white octahedron, 1". Adds +1 to Charisma versus creatures of the same race. 79) Clear octahedron, 1". Air Walk, as the spell. 80) Iridescent green octahedron, 1", which has a reflective "butterflywing" shine. Haste, as the spell 3/day. 81) Pale lavender octahedron, 1". Casts illusion on all Ioun Stones (itself too) that confuses others what they look like. Three times a day 10

it can cloak all ioun stones invisible for one hour. The invisibility ends if any powers are used to attack. 82) Salmon pink octahedron, 1". See Aura, as the spell, all the time. 83) Scarlet octahedron, 1". Grants True Sight, as the Spell, 3/day. 84) Sky blue octahedron, 1". Freedom of Movement, as the spell. 85) Wine dark blue octahedron, 1". Feather Fall, as the spell, at will. 86) Blood red orthorhomboid, 1". All angles are 90 degrees but sides are unequal. Transmuter, change nonliving matter to energy in a 10 cube. 1-8+2 charges.

87) Rutilated pink pentagon, " across. The stone is flat and about 1/8" thick with rounded edges. Cast restoration on self or others 3 uses only.

88) Deep purple triangular prism, 2" long, that glows with UV light. Grants Ultravision 60' range or double normal Ultravision.

89) Dusty rose triangular prism, 2" long. Gives +1 protection, like a ring of protection. 90) Light blue triangular prism, 2" long. Understand all spoken languages. 91) Orange triangular prism, 2" long. Adds +1 level of experience. 92) Pale green triangular prism, 2" long. Adds +1 competence bonus to all rolls. 11

93) Vibrant purple triangular prism, 2" long; has florescent coloring. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. Stores 2-12 levels of spells. 94) Black pyritohedron, 1" tall. It is covered with phantasmagoric black flames. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. Negative Energy pulse, 1 Life Level, 60' range, nonliving save vs. disintegration, 2d4 charges.

95) Blue equilateral triangle pyramid, 1" tall. Spell Penetration, 10% chance to overcome magic resistance.

96) Orange equilateral triangle pyramid, 1" tall. User and 200lbs. can Passwall like a Xorn for 1 hr., 2d10 charges. 97) Scarlet equilateral triangle pyramid, 1" tall. Adds +20% to a predefined skill. Up to five duplicates may be used to build up five skills. 98) Sky blue quartz crystal, 2" long. It is always cold to the touch. (Genie Stone). Summons a Djinni 1/month or a Djinnling 1/day.

99) Bright white rectangle, 1 " long. Has square ends. Adds +1 save vs. acids.

100) Polished copper rectangle, 1 " long. Has square ends. User can read magic at will. 101) Soft black rectangle, 1 " long. Has square ends. Protection vs. life-level draining, 2d10 charges. 102) Brown rhomboid, 1" long. No angles are 90 degrees. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. User and 200lbs. can assume gaseous form for 1 hr., 2d10 charges.

103) Cerulean blue rhomboid, 1" long. No angles are 90 degrees. Bestows free action on user, as per the magic ring. 104) Dark blue rhomboid, 1" long. No angles are 90 degrees. Alertness, -1 to be surprised. 105) Pale blue rhomboid, 1" long. No angles are 90 degrees. Adds +1 to Strength, 18 maximum. Up to two duplicates of this stone may be used for a total maximum bonus of +2 to the ability score. 106) Pink rhomboid, 1" long. No angles are 90 degrees. Adds +1 to Constitution, 18 maximum. Up to two duplicates of this stone may be used for a total maximum bonus of +2 to the ability score. 107) Steel grey rhomboid, 1" long. No angles are 90 degrees. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. Drain 1 life level per touch 1/day, 2d10 charges. 108) Magenta ring shape, " cylinder with a loop ring diameter of 1 ". User can become invisible (improved) at will.

109) Silver rod, " thick and 2" long. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. Gives +1 save vs. electrical attacks.

110) Flickering white snowflake, 1" across. It sparkles. Grants +1 save vs. cold attacks.

111) Agate eye sphere. Looks like agate ringed stone, 1" in diameter. Allows normal vision in 360 all the time.

112) Clear sphere, 1" in diameter. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. Grants 5% magic resistance. Up to five duplicates may be used to build 25% resistance maximum.

113) Clear pink sphere, 1" in diameter. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. Spirit Storage. User's soul is transferred into the stone when a death blow is received, where it can be returned to the body easily through the power of a restoration spell. The body will have 1 HP, however. 114) Deep black sphere, 1" in diameter. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. Spirit Storage. Allows user to see in magical darkness (30' range). 115) Deep red sphere, 1" in diameter. Adds +1 to Dexterity, 18 maximum. Up to two duplicates of this stone may be used for a total maximum bonus of +2 to the ability score. 116) Pulsing orange sphere with orbiting phantasmagoric orbiting lights. This sphere is only " in diameter. The lights are insubstantial and the sphere lights from within like an incandescent bulb. It flares and dims never going out, only pulsing. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. User is immune to ionic and electromagnetic radiation. 14

117) Green sphere, 1" in diameter. Gives +1 save vs. gas attacks. 118) Incandescent blue sphere, 1" in diameter. Glows blue from within like a light bulb all the time. Adds +1 to Wisdom, 18 maximum. Up to two duplicates of this stone may be used for a total maximum bonus of +2 to the ability score. 119) Pink and green sphere, 1" in diameter. Adds +1 to Charisma, 18 maximum. Up to two duplicates of this stone may be used for a total maximum bonus of +2 to the ability score. 120) Scarlet and blue sphere, 1" in diameter. +1 to Intelligence, 18 maximum. Up to two duplicates of this stone may be used for a total maximum bonus of +2 to the ability score. 121) Polished silver sphere, 1" in diameter. Negates rear-attack bonuses against user from any source. 122) Yellow sphere, 1" in diameter. Sheds continual light 15' radius, on command. 123) Black and white, Yin and Yang sphere, 1" in diameter. Sustains user without sleep.

124) Blue green 90 degree cone spindle, 1". Bestows airy element (even Vacuum) in a 10' sphere at will.

125) Bright yellow 90 degree cone spindle, 1". Fly, as the spell, at will. 126) Clear 90 degree cone spindle, 1". Sustains user without food or water. 15

127) Clear sapphire blue 90 degree cone spindle, 1". Water Stone. Cast Fog Cloud, as the the spell, 3/day. Sustains user without air. 129) Pearly white 90 degree cone spindle, 1". Looks like a pearl's surface. User regenerates 1hp/turn. 130) Rainbow colored 90 degree cone spindle, 1". User and 200lbs. can polymorph self for 1 hr., 2d10 charges. 131) Pulsing red five pointed star, 1" across. The star lights red from within like an incandescent bulb. It flares and dims never going out, only pulsing. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. User has +1 save vs. fire attacks.

132) Maroon five pointed star, 1" across. User is harmed only by magic weapons or spells for full damage. 133) Pearlescent pearl tear drop, " long. This stone is from the Plane of Salt and powered by negative energy unlike the other stones from the Plane of Minerals. User can see underwater, 100' range.

134) Black tetrahedron, 1" tall. It emits black light, darkness that hurts the eyes and illuminates in shades of darkness. This stone is from the 16

135) Florescent blue tetrahedron, 1" tall. Glows evenly blue to the edges like a florescent bulb all the time. Shield 20 HP for 1hr 3/day. Up to five duplicates may be used to build a 100 HP shield maximum. 136) Ruby red tetrahedron, 1" tall. As a contingency spell, user plants contingency, one use only. Once contingency spell is planted, the stone becomes incandescent and lights red from within like an incandescent bulb.
