"This individual was a big seller of stolen bicycles and fueling thieves to steal bicycles for a quick buck. By prosecuting the defendant we are dealing a blow to the marketplace of stolen bicycles." -- District Attorney George Gascon, DA Prosecutes Alleged Bike Thief, Mission Local, July 18, 2012.

Getting Enforcement Right

Are you frustrated by confusing or wrongheaded messages and tactics to encourage safe streets from City agencies and the media? Do you wish that the SF Police Department and SF Municipal Transportation Agency were doing an excellent job of targeting the most dangerous behavior by road users at the known, most dangerous intersections? We share your frustration. So we're sharing with you the list of the 21 most dangerous locations for people walking and biking in San Francisco -- a list that we continue to put in front of the SF Police Department and SF Municipal Transportation Agency. These locations are where we expect the City to target the bulk of its limited resources to make our streets safer for everyone. Enforcement means both in person policing as well as engineering and policy changes: a separated bikeway on crucial blocks of Oak Street, automated enforcement at Market and Octavia Boulevard, etc. You can be sure that we will continue to speak up for your -- and everyone's safety -- by urging the SF Police Department to focus on these intersections in the months to come.

Street workshops. We were thrilled to see many people who care about bicycling speaking up for a plan for a wide, continuous separated bikeway with continued full access to the roadway. If you were not able to attend, please take a moment to share your thoughts about what Market Street should look like. The City is asking as many people as possible to fill out this short survey, and your input is crucial. Learn more about the draft concepts presented by the City's project team, and the history of the campaign. Be sure to fill out the survey and let the city know how they can make Market Street a world-class street for everyone!

Masonic Avenue Plan Clears a Hurdle

We are thrilled to report that the community-supported plan for Masonic Avenue cleared another hurdle on its way to construction. The project's supplemental environmental impact review has been completed and has found the project sound. Next step: detailed design and securing funding ... then construction! Once built, Masonic Avenue will provide a critical connection from the heart to the north of the city, and tame an incredibly dangerous and unpleasant neighborhood street. Test Your Bikes on BART Knowledge

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has long advocated to make the region's transit systems easier to access with a bike. From bike racks on MUNI to opening up CalTrain for more bikes onboard to our most recent work to win expanded access for bikes on BART, we know that having the option of taking your bike on transit provides an added level of comfort and convenience. Every Friday this August, BART is going to relax one of the final barriers to moving freely about the Bay Area by bike. They're going to test allowing passengers to bring their bikes on board at all times, even during rush hours. All other rules pertaining to bikes on BART will still be in effect. Help us make the pilot a big success by spreading the word about good bike etiquette. Think you're a bikes on BART expert? Take our quick quiz and find out. And while you have bikes and BART on the brain, volunteer for the BART/bike pilot. The San Francisco Bicycle

Video: A Bike Superhighway

Wouldn't it be great if you could pedal to work on your own bicycle highway? Well, in Copenhagen you can. Last April, the city of Copenhagen got its first bicycle " Superhighway," a massive bikeway that stretches from the suburbs into the city center. This 11-mile bikeway was created to entice people to commute to and from Copenhagen from surrounding cities. Complete with air pumps every mile, rest stations and traffic lights timed to biker's pace, the new bike superhighway is making it easier and more enjoyable for people to commute long distances by bike. Copenhagen is sure to become a model for many cities looking to expand their bicycle community. Check out this awesome video about the revolutionary bike project!
