Processes of primary Al production

Mining Processing Producing

3 independent stages:

1st stage : Actual mining of the raw materials: bauxite, kaolinite, nepheline, alunite ,etc. 2nd stage: Processing of the ore and preparation of alumina
3rd stage: Producing of aluminum from alumina

Using metals for improving the properties

Boron (B) Precipitating transition metal impurities: Ti and V Improving electrical properties A dilute master alloy (<1% B) Bismuth (Bi) Used pure metal and a dilute master alloy Enhancing machinability
Aluminum Alloys 6

Using metals for improving the properties

Chromium (Cr) Preventing grain growth in Al-Mg alloys, Inhibiting recrystallization in Al-Mg-Si and AlMg-Zn alloys, Correcting for Fe to produce a golden color in anodizing Copper (Cu) Used in many forms (pure metal, master alloys, etc.) Increasing strength

Using metals for improving the properties

Iron (Fe) Addition forms are similar to that for copper. Improving the high-temperature strength Magnesium (Mg) Added as the pure metal or master alloys Providing high strength and good ductility Improving excellent corrosion resistance - weldability - heat treatment ability

Using metals for improving alloy properties

Manganese (Mn) Improving strength Preventing recrystallization Lead (Pb) Like Bismuth Used as pure metal, concentrated tablets and master alloys Enhancing machinability

Using metals for improving the properties

Silicon (Si) Addition as pure metal, master alloys and through powder injection Giving excellent uidity in casting.
Strontium (Sr) Added as a dilute master alloy modifying the eutectic in Al-Si alloys
