MAIZE HARVEST It is that time of the year again when the maize dries out after growth in the rainy season, the cobs are brought in and the

BLANKET DISTRIBUTION It is also the time of the year when the weather is at its coldest. Nights can be bitterly cold and many of our clients have just

maize separated from the cobs. Though the amount of maize sown in our farm this last season was not great as we sowed what we could afford, the yield was very rewarding. Thanks to Richard and his two workers and a little help from the young ones at harvest, the cobs were huge and laden with maize grains. Apparently they count the rows of grain on a cob and ours were particularly good. The cobs are put into a sack and beaten to loosen the grain after which it is emptied out onto a sheet and the nal separation done by hand by rubbing cobs against each other. Based on our current rate of use the thirty ve or so bags

a grass mat to lie on and a thin cotton cloth to cover themselves with. We are grateful to many ladies who knit brightly coloured blankets throughout the year enabling us to give each needy person at least one warm blanket each. These simple acts of love, from knitting to distribution, make such a difference to people not just in keeping out the cold but bringing in the warmth of care BUILDING We are embarking on a rather monster venture, which we feel is necessary for Isubilo to become more self-sustaining as we are not covering our running costs. Some of the farm land bought nearly 8 years ago, which we have not been able to use, is at has multiplied the value of the land. We feel that the best way to make the most of this, is the end of a recent housing development which

20 TONS OF MAIZE Talking about maize, we felt its very important to have a stock of maize to make sure we do not run out and to keep the mill running which brings in a steady trickle of an income. A church in Tamworth very kindly nanced the best part of 20 tons of maize which we were able to order from the Food Reserve Agency which we can store safely and use as needed. At this time of the year maize is at its cheapest

to sell some of the land as plots and build on the remaining land with the capital from those plots, to rent houses out, bringing in a steady income for the running of Isubilo. This is a huge undertaking and we are praying for a project manager to oversee it. We have had numerous encounters with a corrupt Town Council and still battling, though we are condent of being able to go ahead with this venture

MAKING OUR OWN BRICKS ON SITE

A while ago we had the generous donation of a machine which compresses soil with 5% cement to make strong interlocking bricks, a little like Lego. This enables walls to go up to roof level in a matter of a few days. We have already started producing these bricks by faith and have almost enough for the rst three bedroomed house. We are just waiting for planning permission to start building on part of the Centres plot behind our youth centre. But we discovered that the Council had given this part of our property to others to build on! We are currently in the process of reclaiming this land and conrming planning permission

ONE OF OUR GIRLS Anne (not her real name), was really discouraged having failed her grade 9 for the second time. This year it has been difcult to replace last years voluntary teachers who have moved on, some of them who are interns are now in tertiary courses. However the extra tuition has gone on and we are pleased to say that Anne has really beneted to

the extent that she is now doing better than this years grade 9 students. We are expecting her to pass with ease this coming year-end. A prize giving was held for the best students to encourage the students in their efforts

SWEAT SHIRTS We recently received a good number of brand new thick sweat shirts which arrived just as the cold was setting in. Again, this is another way of being able to express compassion and care to those in great need

exceptionally well. He has climbed to the top of his class in his latest exams as well as been elected Secretary of the School Council which is unusual for a rst year student. Another thoroughly good young man, Michael, who has been with us since he was a little boy, has just been accepted to do a nursing course at Kalene Mission Hospital. We are very pleased to see our young people getting much valued and over-subscribed places.
