function of the Agency is to provide a safe, secure, efficient and economic air navigation service in consonance with international standards. The basic functions of the Agency are as follows: To provide air traffic services, including air traffic control, aeronautical telecommunications, visual and non visual aids, to enable public transport, private business and military aircraft fly, as far as practicable and possible. To generally secure the safety, efficiency and regularity of air navigation. To require persons engaged in, employed in or in connection with air navigation to supply meteorological information for the purpose of air navigation as might be deemed appropriate from time to time. To provide adequate facilities and personnel for effective security of navigational aids outside the airport perimeters. To procure, install and maintain adequate communication, navigation and surveillance and air traffic management facilities at all airports. To ensure an effective co-ordination in the use of the Nigerian Airspace in line with established standards and procedures. To hold meetings with the armed forces on Nigerias international obligations as they relate to civil and military co ordinations. To maintain permanent liaison with the civil air traffic services units and relevant air defense units in order to ensure the daily integration or segregation of civil and military air traffic operating within the same or immediately adjacent portions of the Nigerian Airspace employing civil or military radars as necessary. To obviate the need for civil aircraft to obtain special air defense clearance To take necessary steps to prevent as far as possible, penetration of controlled airspace by any aircraft, civil or military, without co-ordination with the air traffic control unit concerned Undertake systems engineering development and implementation for Communication, Navigation, Surveillance and air traffic management. Charge for services provided by the Agency. To co-ordinate the implementation of Aeronautical Search and Rescue services, and To discharge the operational, technical and financial air traffic service commitments arising from Nigerias membership of international organizations and other air navigation agencies. Activities Geographical Focus Notes This aviation parastatals is responsible for the provision of seamless Air Traffic Management Services for the local and International airline operations. It is led by a Managing Director and supported by five Directors. Act No 48 established NAMA on 26 May 1999, as a body corporate with perpetual succession and common seal. The Agency operates under Nigerian laws, rules and regulations based on the framework established by the Chicago Convention, which regulates international civil aviation. The major civil aviation organisations with which the Agency has a relationship are the International Civil Aviation Organisation, (ICAO) the Ministry of Aviation, (FMA) Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, (NCAA) Federal
