It included a celebration of British history and Northern Ireland played its part with a rendition of Danny Boy by a choir of Ballymena schoolchildren, as well as a stirring recital of Shakespeare by Belfast-born actor Kenneth Branagh, before the Olympic torch finally finished its long pilgrimage around the UK and the flame was lit, signifying the official opening of the Games. Earlier yesterday the RAFs iconic Red Arrows staged a flypast at Belfast City Hall on a celebratory tour of the UKs capital cities, before up to 1,000 people, including Lord Mayor Gavin Robinson, watched the opening ceremony on the big screen.
