Minutes of the Stakeholders information sharing workshop-September 19, 2011 After presentation of materials from the attendees, all

participants were divided into 3 separate groups, with each group to focus and discuss one out of the 3 key areas we wanted to focus on in the workshop. Below are the 3 key areas identified? 1. How to improve sustainable productivity? (TOPIC FOR GROUP ONE) 2. What is to be done to improve market linkages of fruits and vegetables? (TOPIC FOR GROUP TWO) 3. How to improve the collaboration between stakeholders? (TOPIC FOR GROUP THREE)

QUESTIONS? If good quality seedlings are available, will farmers buy them? ANSWER? Yes, some farmers have started using the high quality seedlings, and have seen the difference. Some hotels require a wider range of fruits and vegetables Having a reliable hotel with good management and commitment to buy Suitable marketing policy Having a forum for horticulturist to have a stronger alliance/ voice for their need Gradually improve the supply of produce Centralization of a marketing vegetables Moral contract

Suggestions to include:-More market research -Should start with small hotels and restaurants and gradually build up -Should target the local market as well as the hotels -Should concentrate on producing more produce, to exceed local consumers and self-consumption GROUP THREE 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Strengthening of regular meeting, workshops, seminars etc. Sharing of expertise in agriculture, tourism and entrepreneurship Involve the beneficiaries in stakeholder meetings Organizing exhibitions or trade fares/shows Strengthen joint farmers visits Sharing the resources (persons, finance, materials, facilities and etc.) Strengthen the voice for the government and NGO, E.G. permit fees Develop a strategic plan which will focus on one ambition/goal; horticulture/agriculture

QUESTIONS: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. How do farmers know the type of seeds they are buying? Is there a common screening of seeds? Is the government involved in the screening of seed? Is there an agricultural field day in Zanzibar? Is it important for Agricultural research stations to involve the farmers in the screening process of the seed?
