Church of the Holy Eucharists 24th an-
nual Pine Barrens Festival commenced
Monday, July 23, without a hitch, despite
some rainy weather.
The event is volunteer-powered by those
of the parish and outside community.
More than 450 volunteers donate their
time to the event both within and outside
the parish.
Ive been here for 10 years, said Father
Andrew Jamieson of Church of the Holy
Eucharist. And its amazing to see the gen-
erosity of the volunteers. They take vaca-
tion time to come work the festival and
thats just wonderful.
The parish maintains all the booths, and
the only part of the event run by an outside
source, is the rides.
Marriage Encounter is one of the booth
sponsors running Josephines Caf, offer-
ing sweet baked goods and coffee.
The booth used to be run by Josephine,
who passed away five years ago. She used to
do a wheel, said Rose Kukura of Shamong,
who works with Marriage Encounter and

val.
The baked treats were all do-
nated and made by parishioners.
Its important to the commu-
nity, you get to talk to everyone
and say hello, said Kukura.
Come enjoy a cup of coffee
and a piece of cake and listen to
the music, said Kukura. Its like
a social network.
Between 35,000 and 40,000 visi-
tors were expected to come visit
this year and enjoy the family
friendly atmosphere, while sup-
porting a good cause.
The money goes directly to
the parish and its upkeep of the
year its a major fundraiser for
the church, said Father
Jamieson.
The festival has seen improve-
ment over the years between
growing crowds and an increase
in interest.
I would say there has been
gradual improvement over the
past few years. Three years ago
we got the new rides from Majes-
tic Midway, and everyone loved
the safety, cleanliness and the pro-
fessionalism, said Jamieson.
Were just glad to have them at
the Pine Barrens Fest.
The festival takes place on the
churchs property and dedicates
each night of the festival to differ-
ent Pineland towns in the area
with honoring a Volunteer of the
Year from the unique towns.
Each town nominates two peo-
ple and the festival committee
makes the selection of who is Vol-
unteer of the Year, said Mary
Fishl, chairperson of the Culture
and History and Nature Re-
sources tent at the festival, in ad-
dition to organizing Volunteers of
the Year.
Our [tent] is all about differ-
ent things and what they all have
in common is the history and cul-
ture of the Pine Barrens, Fishl
explained. In terms of culture,

The Shamong Sun
Tiger Twilight Camp hosted
Scouts entering the first grade,
from Shamong, Tabernacle and
members in the Burlington Coun-
ty area.
The camp ran from July 24
through the 26 at the Pine Tree
Environmental Education Center
in Tabernacle.
The program, for the youngest
members of Scouts, who graduat-
ed kindergarten, will get their
first introduction to Scouting
when they enter the camp and be-
come Tiger Scouts.
Tiger Scout is the first rank
achieved as a Cub Scout. The
Scout must complete five achieve-
ments on the Tiger Cub trail in
order to earn the Tiger Cub
badge, according to the Boy
Scouts of America official site.
Each achievement has three ac-
tivities: one to be completed with
the family, one with the den, and a
go see it activity, or field trip.
Once a boy has earned his Tiger
Cub badge, he can complete vari-
ous electives to earn Tiger Track
beads. The Tiger Cub program
provides opportunities for the
Scout to learn and grow while
having fun.
The campers engage in crafts,
archery, science and nature les-
sons and play a game each night
with their adult companion ei-
ther parents or family members.
Along with different games,
the camp is age appropriate
learning. Its what we strive for,
said Chuck Jaxel, the Tiger Twi-
light Camp director.
Jaxel, a Distinguished Eagle
Scout, has been working with
Burlington County Boy Scouts of
America for four years. Jaxel, like
many, went through the Boy
Scout program, similar to the
campers and newest member of
BSA.
This year was on average with
the last five years. It was definite-
ly success, said Jaxel.
Tiger Twilight Camp has been
running 10 years, and this past
year was organized and ran by a
volunteer from Westhampton,
Denise Blane. The camp has a
new volunteer run the program
each year.

Moreover the festival honors a
resident of the Pine Barrens with
the Pine Barrens Festival Award.
Russel Juelg will be honored as
the 2012 Pine Barrens Festival
Award recipient.
The award is given to some-
one who has made an outstanding
contribution to the culture, histo-
ry and natural resource of the
Pine Barrens, Fishl said.
This year, Shamong was held
the night before the finale of the
festival, July 27 and honored John
Volpa for his dedication to the
community and his work as a sci-
ence teacher at Indian Mills Me-
morial School. Volpa retired in
June.
Volpa has worked with an im-
pressive 3,000 children in a men-
toring program teaching kids
about environmental conserva-
tion and resource management.
His standout achievements in-
clude the organization of the
sixth-grade overnight Camp
Ocky and development of an en-
vironmentally active and aware
student council. Most recently he
received a grant to organize vol-
unteers to improve and maintain
the walking and biking trails in
Shamong Township.
We just wanted everyone to
turn out and enjoy a great time
with their families and children,
enjoy great food and great enter-
tainment. Its a great time, said
Father Jamieson.

The first night, the Scouts
made neckerchiefs specific to
what they like. This years theme
was Rootin Tootin Cowboys,
and a majority followed the
theme by decorating with horses
and cowboys.
Other crafts the Scouts made
were edible necklaces out of pret-
zels and cereal, leaf paintings and
on the last night they made a pic-
ture frame to hold the photos
taken on the first night.
The children also were able to
experience a sport not many
adults get the opportunity to try.
The kids got their first taste of
archery, they just love it, said
Jaxel.
The adults were included in
some of the activities too, Jaxel
said. One of the neatest things
was seeing the excitement on the
childrens faces,
Educational values were an im-
portant aspect of the camp un-
derstanding why leaves are im-
portant to trees were taught to the
Scouts, giving them the broad
view on nature.
Cub scouting is fun. No mat-
ter what grade you are in, first
through fifth, it can be a blast, es-
pecially if you love to learn by
doing. This is just the place, said
Jaxel. You learn to tie knots, set
up a tent, archery, and cooking a
meal on a campfire. Kids learn
how to send a secret code to a
buddy, build a birdhouse, and
hike.

The tragedy that occurred in Colorado
was a shock to our nation. This type of vio-
lence never makes sense and leaves us
shaking our heads. What is also tragic, are
the attempts made to politicize this horrif-
ic event.
The immediate outcry is that guns
should be banned. We are kidding our-
selves if we really believe that banning
anything solves the problem. Perfect exam-
ples are the war on drugs or the prohibi-
tion of alcohol. Do we really think that
criminals will not get handguns if its
against the law? Maybe we should ban fer-
tilizer and ammonia next since the two can
easily be used to make a bomb. Its stupid
and unrealistic.
As of 2009, the U.S. population was about
307 million. Based on production data from
manufacturers there were approximately
300 million firearms owned by civilians in
2010. Of those, about 100 million were
handguns. Almost 50 percent of house-
holds in the U.S.
have a firearm.
With that level of
public acceptance,
its ludicrous to
think that passing
a law will change
that behavior. It
will however,
make all those
law-abiding citi-
zens criminals.
When polled, 67
percent of gun
owners stated that
they own firearms for protection against
crime and target shooting. 41 percent were
hunters.
So, is it realistic to think that owning a
gun can help defend you against crimi-
nals? A survey by the Journal of Quantita-
tive Criminology indicates that U.S. civil-
ians use guns to defend themselves and
others from crime about 1 million times a
year. About half of those instances are to
frighten away intruders who are breaking
into their homes.
A survey of male felons in 11 state pris-
ons dispersed across the U.S. had some in-
teresting results:
34 percent had been scared off , shot at,
wounded or captured by an armed victim
40 percent had decided not to commit a
crime because they knew or believed that
the victim was carrying a gun.
69 percent personally knew other crimi-
nals who had been scared off, shot at,
wounded or captured by an armed victim.
How about the flip side of this? A study
by the Justice Department over a 10-year
period found:
42 percent of Americans will be the vic-
tim of a completed violent crime (assault,
robbery, rape) in the course of their lives.

Most school districts have done a lot
in recent years to be more responsive

taxes as low as possible, while still pro-
viding great service. One of the best

true public-private partnership be-
tween schools and the communities
they serve. And building that relation-
ship starts with effective communica-
tion.

Across the country there have
been various attempts to ban vari-
ous types of firearms. Washing-
ton, D.C., was one of the first cities
to ban handguns; the Washington,
D.C. law was recently struck down
by the Supreme Court. During the
years that the ban was in effect,
the murder rate was 73 percent
higher than at the outset of the
law, while during that same period
the national murder rate averaged
11 percent lower.
Take into consideration the
Chicago handgun ban. The per-
centage of murders committed
with handguns has average 40
percent higher than it was before
the law took effect in Chicago.
Floridas right to carry law be-
came effective in 1987. About 5.4
percent of the population over
the age of 21 in Florida has an ac-
tive carry permit. Since the out-
set of the Florida law, their mur-
der rate has averaged 36 percent
lower that before the law took ef-
fect. The U.S. murder rate has av-
eraged 15 percent lower during
the same period.
Statistics, however, can be de-
ceiving and can also be manipu-
lated so rather than base any con-
clusions on them, lets do some-
thing unique and use something
which is totally lacking in our
government these days. Common
sense.
I will start by saying that I own
a few handguns. The process of
getting a permit to purchase a
handgun in New Jersey is pretty
thorough. You get fingerprinted,
the state police performs crimi-
nal background checks, you need
references, etc. Once you clear all
that is where the problem begins.
You take your permit to pur-
chase to a gun store, pick out a
gun and can leave. There is no
training requirement. I know
some of my gun friends wont
like this, but it is stupid to allow
someone to purchase a gun and
not get fully trained on how to use
it. Instead of focusing our efforts
on banning guns, we need to focus
on teaching people how to use
them safely. In my case I elected to
take training to educate myself. It
shouldnt be optional.
So if we approach gun owner-
ship from a common sense per-
spective there are things we can
do to make it better. First, gun
laws need to be consistent from
state to state. At a minimum,
someone who carries a license
from their home state should not
become a criminal when they
cross a state line. Background
checks need to be standardized
for all states. Gun safety training
should be mandatory to purchase
a firearm. If you intend to carry
the weapon (impossible in NJ)
then additional training should
be required. There is no need to
allow the public to own fully auto-
matic weapons or high capacity
magazines. People who shoot for
sport dont need those and nei-
ther do the folks who hunt.
The event in Colorado was hor-
rible, but it was the shooter, not
the gun, who committed those
acts. That guy would have gotten
weapons whether they were legal
or not.
For once lets hold people ac-
countable for their actions, not
think that we can legislate the
problem away.
