Young children tend to be drawn to bright colors, especially yellow and red. They are not attracted to bland choices such as white, gray or black. Bright shades, however, may not be the best choice because they tend to be too energizing or distracting. A bright color on a wall can also conflict with displays of students' artwork. Calming colors such as pale blue or green are often a better choice. Older students often lean toward the latest fashion trend, which makes them favor bolder or darker shades.

Lessons Learned

Another consideration is the lessons students will be learning in the classroom. For example, if students study social studies, a blue or green wall color may be appropriate when there are several maps on the wall. Science teachers may want to focus on a specific habitat to imitate and therefore select colors that complement this choice. In younger grades, teachers may want to select colors to go with particular learning stations.

Motivational Theme

Every teacher should consider the overall ambiance she wants to create in her classroom. Educators often select a theme for their students to motivate them, such as "Reach for the Stars" or "Reading Is for Champs." Color selection should be based on these themes and add to the overall decor. Classrooms can also be

focused on any popular theme such as sports, hobbies, music or movies. Colors should complement these ideas.

Attitude Adjusters

Both children and adults can be influenced by the paint choices in a classroom. For instance, red can be very stimulating. A deep shade of red is thought to be more stimulating than a lighter shade. Yellow is a cheerful shade, perhaps because it reminds people of sunshine. Various shades of blue seem to be calming. Color choice can also affect motor control and memory. You may want to make a color selection based on the state of mind you want to encourage in your students.
Eschew the standard desks-in-a-row classroom layout and make room for a couch or two. Go to garage or estate sales to get bargains on old, outdated furniture and arrange them in the classroom wherever is best. Depending on the size of the class and the classroom, create a miniature living room (for story time, perhaps) or allow students to rotate between sitting at their desks and sitting in the comfortable furniture (make sure everyone gets a turn regularly). The funkier and more colorful the furniture, the better; many children love bright colors and unusual designs.

Colour Design for Better Classrooms April Cottreau, Teacher, Avalon Adventist Jr. Academy, Port Hardy, BC What colour is ideal for classroom walls? Here are some guidelines you may want to consider as you create an atmosphere for growth. 1. Choosing wall colours is an important decision in business, medical and retail facilities. 1 It only stands to reason that those in the educational business give the issue serious consideration as well. We should approach colour, not from an aesthetic standpoint, but rather from a functional standpoint. Do certain colours result in genuine benefits? Mood is very important in the school, in the work place and in daily life; therefore, it is pertinent to understand how colour affects mood. 2. Studies show that monotone environments may induce anxiety and lead to irritability and an inability to concentrate. 2 Its suggested that the proper use of colour in schools can convert an atmosphere that is depressing and boring into one that is pleasing, exciting and stimulating, promoting more positive feelings about school. This does not mean we must choose the perfect colour and paint every classroom that colour. Several colours within the school are beneficial. We should tailor the learning environment to be attentive to individual children rather than following a course of mass instruction. Too much sameness does not convey the value of diversity. 3. It is recommended that stairways and corridors use bright colours to provide variety and stimulation while passing between other spaces. Hallways serve for movement rather than engagement.

3 They should be more colourful and provide both vibrancy and personality through complimentary colours. Examples include light orange walls, offset by blue doors, or light green walls with low-chroma red doors. Frank H. Mahnke summarizes his experience with institutional white: During my many years of collecting reference material on color and light, I have not yet come across any pronouncement that supports white and off-white on psychological or physiological grounds for prompting its wide use. (Interestingly, although black represents mourning in our culture, the colour of grief in China is white.) Since brighter colours encourage activity, we would do well to consider those colours for areas in the school created for movement such as the hallways, stairways, and gymnasium. Using school colours in certain areas may promote more school spirit. 4. Lighting is too closely connected to room colour to exclude it from this discussion. Glare from the sun must be avoided from surfaces of televisions, whiteboards and monitors. But humans need and want natural sunlight more than 1 www.peterli.com/archive/spm/551.shtm-23k 2 asumag.com/mag/university_classroom_colours/-39k 3 www.coe.uga.edu/sdpl/researchabstracts/bestpractices/visualbp.htmlartificial lighting. Positioning windows and reflective furniture properly and having light-coloured blinds will solve this in part. Brightly coloured walls (as well as high light levels) may increase glare. Therefore, the wall colour in a classroom should not be too bright. 5. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and Winter Blues are genuinely debilitating conditions that act against learning. Its treatment through exposure to particular light is one of the light therapies that is well grounded in research. These problems affect up to 20% of people above the 40 th parallel 4 (including Canada) leading to some depression and reduced productivity. The lighting used to help is full-spectrum lighting fluorescent lighting that more closely resembles sunlight, enriched in blues and violets. The change in lighting, in connection with simple changes in room colour, minimizes the effects of the shorter days. Ideally, children would be outdoors in natural lighting a good part of the day, especially throughout the winter when the days are so short. Since they are largely confined to indoors instead, its best to simulate the natural lighting and colours in the classroom to aid in mental well-being. 6. Consider home as a template for school 5 was a recurring theme in my research. Colours that reduce tension and anxiety produce a home-like atmosphere in contrast to an institutional one. Wall colours are important and just hanging colourful artwork will not compensate for otherwise dull wall colours. Homes generally utilize wall colour more than institutions and we can learn from

them in recreating a welcome place for children to spend much of their life. Home is where you would also tend to see the softening effect of using textured paint effects through sponge paint, air brush, etc. On a side note, using natural wood furnishings, baskets, fabrics and cushions, incandescent lighting, plants, and water (fountain/fish tank) add other homey effects to a classroom. The idea is to recreate a more home-like environment where children want to be. After all, the classroom is their second home and we will find them more teachable if they want to be there. 7. Most institutions would find this somewhat inconvenient and less economical, but the fourth wall, the teaching wall, should be painted a different colour, complementary or at least a darker hue than the other walls. This is not merely for aesthetics. The different hue and colour at the front helps to reduce students eyestrain as they look up and down to write notes. 6 Have you noticed how many more children are wearing glasses each year? 8. The following are generally accepted effects of colours on moods: Red and orange are stimulating Yellow or gold evoke feelings of warmth and cheerfulness. 4 www.isu.edu/ctl/nutshells/ 5 www.essentialschools.org/cs/resources/view/ces_res/210 6 www.isu.edu/ctl/nutshells/IdealClass_files/IdealClass,html Blues are calming. Some suggest the best colour for a classroom is skyblue, tinged with red. This combination is conducive to thoughtful study, but also to alertness. Blues relax. Green suggests hope, restfulness and calm and is associated with nature, giving a peaceful, secure feeling. Light pink, coral and pastel colours soften energy. Pink relates to sensitivity and love. 9. Warm and cool colours make people perceive temperature differently either warmer or cooler as their name implies. 7 A room that tends to be warm may give the impression of coolness with a cool room colour; a room that tends to have a cool temperature may give the perception of warmth by warmcoloured walls. My conclusion after this burst of colour insight is that a variety of colours are needed in a school and a variety of colours are also quite suitable. It seems one has to start by deciding between warm and cool colours: Should I choose a cool colour with the goal of relaxing students? or Should I choose a warm colour to energize them? Ellen Bell, the former principal of College Height Christian School, had been encouraging a variety of changes in class design. She plans to develop a palette of colours carefully selected for teachers to choose from for wall colour and trim. 8 My

personal purpose in teaching grade 5 & 6 is to create a warm, friendly environment that is mildly stimulating. I am considering the benefits of a warm colour such as light golden- yellow or a light pink-violet. My primary choice of a cool colour would be a light green. But for now, Im ready to leave the blas whites and creams behind. Red is a very strong color. It is a noticeable color that is often used on caution and warning signs. It is often associated with stop or "beware". Its a hot color that evokes a powerful emotion of passion, lust, sex, energy, blood and war. Red is a good color to use for accents that need to take notice over other colors. Red is often used in flags for nations, as it is a symbol of pride and strength. It is also a sporty color that many car manufactures choose to showcase their signature vehicles. Orange is a combination of Red and Yellow. It is also a bright and warm color. It represents fire, the sun, fun, warmth and tropical images. It is considered a fun light color that has appetizing qualities to it. Orange increases oxygen supply to the brain and stimulates mental activity. It is highly accepted among young people. As a citrus color, orange is associated with healthy food and stimulates appetite. Any design relating to the tropics, something fun, easy going and youthful should incorporate some type of orange into the design. A darker, richer shade of orange can be associated with autumn. Yellow is the brightest color to the human eye. It represents youth, fun, happiness, sunshine and other light playful feelings. It is a cheerful energetic color. Yellow is often used for childrens toys and clothes. Yellow is often hard to read when placed on a white background so designers must be careful when using yellow, that it isn'tt too difficult to read or notice. Though yellow is a bright cheerful color, as it starts to darken it, however, quickly becomes a dirty and unpleasant color. Yellow can also be associated with being scared and, cowards. The term "yellow belly" is proof of that. Green is the color of nature and health. It represents growth, nature, money, fertility and safety. Green is a relaxing color that is easy on the eye and has a healing power to it. It is often used to represent anything having to do with health. Many pharmaceutical and nutritional companies use green in their logos and material to advertise safe natural products. Dark green is commonly associated with the military, money, finance, and banking. However it can also be associated with being new or inexperienced as being green or a "green horn". Green is becoming a very popular color in design for web sites. Blue is a cool calming color that shows creativity and intelligence. It is a popular color among large corporations, hospitals and airlines. It is a color of loyalty, strength, wisdom and trust. Blue has a calming effect on the psyche. Blue is the color of the sky and the sea and is often used to represent those images. Blue is a color that generally looks good in almost any shade and is a popular color among males. Blue is not a good color when used for food as there are few blue foods found in nature and it suppresses the appetite. Purple combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. Throughout history purple has been associated with royalty, nobility and prestige. It symbolizes mystery, magic, power and luxury. Purple is often used to portray rich powerful kings, leaders, wizards and magicians. Purple combined with gold can be flashy and portray wealth and extravagance. Light purple and pink is good for a

feminine design and is a popular color among teenage girls. Bright purple along with yellow is commonly used in promoting children's products. It gives the appearance of something that is fun and easy to do. Black is often a color used to portray something evil, depressing, scary or even death in western civilization. It has negative imagery with it at times such as "black mail" "black list" "black hole" etc. Black is also a very powerful color that also portrays one of class elegance and wealth. Classy clothing is designed in black from the "power suit" to the "sexy black dress" to formal "black-tie attire". Black combined with other colors can have a very strong statement. Black is a color that can fit into almost every design to add contrast, type, and make the other colors stand out more. White is often associated with being pure, clean, fresh and good. The color of a fresh snowstorm brings up images of a peaceful and pure winter scene. White is a common background for Webster's as it is easy to read black or dark text on it. When used with a design using lots of negative space it gives a very clean look to it. White is also used lots for charities and non-profit organizations to denote something good and positive. Hollywood often portrays their characters in white as being good; the white horse, the cowboy with the white hat, the white wizard etc. White usually is associated with being pure and almost heavenly. White is associated with hospitals, doctors, and heaven.

In nature, green reappears in spring, after a dull and colorless winter. But during the dormant winter months in the classroom, a light shade of warm teal green is reenergizing and acts as a gentle reminder of spring to come, making the middle semester (the coldest one) more bearable, interesting and creates a calm learning atmosphere. It can also filter negativity, put the students and teachers at ease and into a positive state of mind.

Another Effective Light Color - Blue Blue is the color of water and the sea and it represents life. For this reason, lighter shades of blue help calm students especially those with ADHD and ADD. It can also reduce the number of behavior outbursts and discipline problems In the Western culture, blue symbolizes loyalty and authority while it also symbolizes strength and power in the Eastern culture. These are qualities which students want to feel the teachers have on a global level.
Other classroom research findings: Bross and Jackson (1981) declared that colors liked by students influenced their muscular tension and motor control (Poyser, 1983) Colors can also affect memory and the brain's capacity to retain more information. Wohlfarth (1986) and Sydoriak (1987) associated warm colors with slight elevations in blood pressure in children while cooler colors caused slight drops in blood pressure (Hathaway, 1988).

Over to You - Making Correct Classroom Color Choices

Take inventory of your students at the beginning of the year. It would make sense to gather as much information as you can about your students, making notes on the behaviorial limitations, special learning needs and other learning styles. in light of this, see if you can paint the classroom a lighter shade of green and blue. Compare the differences in the students learning. How have they changed? Drop by the discussion boards, share your opinions, ideas and experiences. Works Cited Hathaway, W.E. (1988).
