Conflict
Two (or more!) regulators trying to change the same setting
e.g. Work vs Dont work Be confident vs. Dont talk to strangers Lose weight vs Dont be hungry

Pressure, stress, anxiety are all signs of conflict occurring

Reorganization
If conflict continues, brain initiates reorganization Automatic process of rewiring Continues until the pain/stress of conflict stops If conflict can be stopped by stopping your actions, it probably will be!

Conscious Reorganization
Awareness is the master control system Awareness can direct reorganization Awareness lets us connect perceptions, thereby linking regulators together

Debugging a Conflict
Hold desired elements constant Identify issues being raised
Whats bad about that?

Mitigate/Negotiate Let go of conflicting standards Re-evaluate existing standards

The Regulation Process


A regulator controls ONE perception Detects the difference from the DESIRED setting When out of range, sets another regulator to a different setting Action and goals are SIDE EFFECTS!

Time and Control


Higher-level control = Longer time Lower-level control = Shorter time More-specific behaviors need shorter-time measurables
Time worked today vs. total progress

Exercise done vs. weight lost

Begin with the problem variable
e.g. going after what I want

Write it down (bottom of the page) Imagine setting this variable to the desired new level What objections come up in your mind?

Going Up A Level
Beliefs are If/Then or When/Then If I go after what I want, Im selfish Variables: Going after, Selfishness If = Lower level, Then = Higher Level Draw a line between them!

Mapping The Structure


Record beliefs on lines coming up from the things that trigger them Write short-hand names for the newly-discovered variables Imagine setting the new variable(s) to the way youd want them Repeat until nothings left to map!

What to Ask When


Whats bad/good about this item? What would it be like if? (changed setting) Is that okay? (no? Loop back) Break links w/ Is that true? etc.
