e colonial period of Australias history. Do you think it conveys a sense of belonging to the Australian landscape? Justify your opinion with reference to two features of the text. (2 marks) This text portrays a sense of belonging to the Australian landscape. The positioning of the house snugly nestled between trees on a hill indicates a sense of fitting in to the landscape and thus being connected and belonging to the landscape. Moreover the tidy manicured trees and the windswept grass appears homely, pleasant and inviting emanates a sense of connection, being at home and thus belonging. b) How does this website page convey the connection of Aboriginal people to the land? (2 marks) The use of bold typeface highlighting the words maternal links and paternal links and spiritual and physical health emphasises the idea that the relationship the Aboriginal people have with the land is deeply spiritual. The website employs various symbols of rocks, shells and cultural items as bullet points to visually reinforce the predominance and spiritual nature of the connection to land. c) i) What conflicting notion of belonging is presented in this extract? (1 mark) The persona feels a strong sense of connection and belonging through her relationships with other people she meets throughout her journey; however this conflicts with a sense of alienation and disconnection to the harsh landscape. d) ii) How does the writer represent this conflicting notion of belonging? Discuss two techniques. (2 marks) The use of exhaustive listing of seven hours of solitary driving, the weary cafes, road-houses. depicts a bleak and treacherous landscape and highlights a sense of alienation and disconnection from the land. This is contrasted to the positive admiring language describing the people she meets for example their gentlemanly warmth made it a six-star hotel for me and a human spirit, weirdly Australian, which emphasises a sense of connection and belonging through her relationships. e) (i) Why has the familys sense of belonging been disrupted? (1 mark) The family needs to leave their home to move to a new place because they are drifters, thus disrupting their sense of belonging to place. (ii) How has the poet used two techniques to convey the familys dislocation? (2 marks) The poet employs enjambment to emphasise movement and the familys need to move for example shell go out to the vegetable patch and pick all the green/tomatoes from the vines. The repetition of and further reinforces a flow of movement which seems monotonous like a routine. In this way, the poet emphasises the monotonous movement of the family and thus a sense of dislocation.
