ZD WINES
Four Decades of Organic Excellence in Carneros and on the Silverado Trail
BY JOSH STEIN
ZD WINES Open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 8383 Silverado Trail, Napa, CA 94558 1-800-487-7757 | www.zdwines.com Scan the QR code with your smart phone app for information on tours and tastings!
ZD has been doing things the right way for more than four decades, and over the years they have never lost sight of the importance of being good stewards of the land. Long before Napa became world famous, wine country had its intrinsic appeals: a slow pace of gradual movement, an appreciation for the valleys environs, and working with and not against nature. That feeling of connectedness has been the cornerstone of ZDs success and that same attitude certainly shines through in their wine tasting experiences. Whether youre tromping around their organic vineyard during the Eco Tour or overlooking Rutherfords famous vineyards during the Vineyard View Tour, you will find yourself with a deeper appreciation of organic winegrowing and the attention to detail it takes to make world-class wine. ZD prides itself as an eco-friendly winery, and equally a winery that produces world-class wine. They do a great job connecting the relationship between healthy, balanced grapevines to the quality of wine in the bottle. Take ZDs Eco Tour and youll learn all about the great lengths taken to produce flavorful grapes in a way that is symbiotic with nature. As you sip your way around the vineyard, you are exposed to the sights, smells and sounds of organic farming: the cover crops, insectaries, owl boxes and composting. All their equipment runs on biodiesel. They use hybrid vehicles and solar power, implemented waste reduction programs and a water recycling system. If a walkabout in the vineyard isnt for you, ZD offers a variety of tour and tasting experiences to choose from, like the Cellar Tour, which offers visitors several current vintage and reserve wines with a private guided tour through the cellar and a sampling of soon to be released wine maturing in the barrel. A Private Group Tour & Tasting provides a relaxed experience where groups of people can enjoy a private tasting in the intimate environment of its barrel rooms. The Vineyard View Tour & Tasting is an experience in the eponymous room with its west-Valley-facing floor-to-ceiling windowed space and exterior deck above the crushpad at the top of the winery. From there, you can see the entire property as you enjoy the wines complemented by artisan cheeses and finished with a decadent chocolate truffle. All tours require an appointment. ZD also offers daily tastings, just drop by their Rutherford winery on the Silverado Trail between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. They offer a tasting of current wines and a reserve tasting with selections from the library. ZD Wines was founded by two aerospace engineers involved in the 1960s space race, Norman deLeuze and partner Gino Zepponi. The ZD in ZD Wines has two meanings: the obvious, the initials of the partners, and the inspirational Zero Defects, a quality-control program used to build rocket engines. With a love of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, they set out to make their favorite Burgundian wines. They received their winery permit in 1969, the first new permit issued in decades, and subsequently fell in love with the Carneros grape growing region where the first ZD wines were produced. It was the beginning of a journey that had included three-generations. ZD produces more than excellent Cabernet, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, they also produce special winery-only bottlings, known as the Rosa Lee Whims, including, at various times, releases of Barbera, Malbec, Muscat Canelli, Mourvdre, Petit Sirah, Pinot Grigio, Riesling and Viognier the newest is a delicious and not-to-be-missed Grenache Ros. Perhaps the wine most symbolic of ZDs approach to sustainable winegrowing is its Founders Reserve Pinot Noir, made from the grapes off of its organic estate vineyard in the Carneros region. This wine is a tribute to Norman, who was the motivational force behind ZDs philosophy of eco-friendly business practices and organic farming.

GRGICH HILLS ESTATE Open Daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 1829 St Helena Hwy S Saint Helena, CA 94574 (800) 532-3057 | www.grgich.com
The American Dream came true for me in Napa ValleyThat is how I feel about it., explained famed winemaker Mike Grgich. It being the sweeping success story of man triumphing over Easternblock Communism and global migration only to win the most celebrated wine competition ever the 1976 Paris Tasting and placing California wine squarely on the global enological throne as King. No small feat any of it so you can imagine my surprise to find this Napa titan a fit, twinkle-eyed 89 years old, happily signing autographs, taking pictures and even pouring wine to unwitting customers behind the bar in his universally acclaimed Grgich Hills Estate Winery. Born into a winemaking family living under Communism in Croatia, Miljenko Mike Grgich was one of 11 children tending vineyards from a very young age. His mother weaned him from breast milk at 2-1/2 years and my next beverage, from that point forward, was wine Wine is so important for the whole family, continued Mike. It is tradition. It took the covert whispers of his college professor, Professor Hebrang (who had just returned from a sabbatical trip to study California wines and vines) to inspire young Mike to think big. In the rare absence of police monitors, Professor Hebrang whispered California is a Paradise. And, Mike was hooked. In August 1954, he literally walked out of Croatia carrying just one small suitcase with two degrees in winemaking and business, ten books on winemaking, a clean beret and US $32 between the soles of his shoe. It took him four years to arrive in West Germany, immigrate to Canada by 1958 and later board a Greyhound bus to California. He arrived at 10:15 p.m. on August 15, 1958 in St. Helena, California holding the promise of a job at Souverain Cellars. The Souverain position came with a small cottage that Mike was emotionally overwhelmed to see surrounded by Zinfandel vineyards the same vines he knew as a boy. The vines, to Mike, were old friends and I felt not lonesome anymore. Mikes subsequent meteoric rise in winemaking is stuff of legend. Like Henry Ford or Andrew Carnegie, Mike worked his way up from humble beginnings to be a keystone of his industry based on luck, ambition and determination. Following one vintage at Souverain, Mike moved onto Christian Brothers (now the Culinary Institute of America) followed by nine years working alongside legendary Russian winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff at Beaulieu Vineyards. In 1968, a mere ten years after stepping off that Greyhound bus, Mike became Chief Enologist at the most innovative winery of the time, the Robert Mondavi Winery. In 1969, I made my very first Cabernet for Robert, Mike recalls by fusing cutting-edge techniques that nodded to his traditional winemaking heritage. Mike listened intently to the teaching of the master and took to heart Roberts preaching that one day, wed be making wines every bit as good as France. By 1972, Mike joined Chateau Montelena as winemaker and limited partner. There, he produced the epic 1973 Chardonnay that knocked the

French out of first position in the most famous, groundbreaking, blind tasting competition in Paris, 1976. That day, his 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay scored not just the best Chardonnay but the very best wine in the world. I was nobody really until that point, says Grgich. Jim Barrett, Montelena owner, showed Mike the winning telegram but it took Frank Prial, a reporter from the New York Times to fly out to Napa and truly explain the magnitude of the win. Then, Mike remembers, It was like being born again. Within a single year, he joined forces with Austin Hills, of Hills Brother Coffee Co., and broke ground on his childhood dream a California winery of his very own Grgich Hills Estate. In each corner of the new winery, Mike buried one of his four top bottles produced respectively at Souverain, Beaulieu Vineyards, Robert Mondavi and Chateau Montelena. Mike did not let his fame get the best of him. Instead, he
channeled his focus into producing smaller and smaller batches of only the finest quality Napa Valley wines. Mike worked to purchase prime Napa vineyards to control every step on winemaking from vine to bottle. Today, all Grgich Hills wines are produced from 100% Estate vineyards and represent some of the finest terroir and microclimates found in Napa Valley. Even now in 2012, Mike and his team still work to carefully produce artisan wine each year. With too large a production, you cant specialize, says Mike. The rule exists that limited production allows you, the Winemaker, to be an artist. Today, Mike still revels among his vines and works with daughter Violet and nephew Ivo Jeramaz on each vintage produced at Grgich Hills Estate. And on very special occasions, he breaks out a bottle of that 1973 Chardonnay to savor with family. To Mike, the old wines taste better and better as Good wine and good ladies only improve with maturity.

HAHN ESTATE
Discover One of Santa Lucia Highlands Top Pinot Noir Producers
Visitors to Monterey County will be pleasantly surprised to discover that theres more to this California community than what is along the coast. For more than three decades, a thriving wine country has emerged due in large part to the efforts of Hahn Estate and the rise of the Santa Lucia Highlands. A short drive inland from downtown Monterey will reward any wine lover interested in discovering one of the regions most acclaimed destinations. Hahn Estate was established in the mid-1970s by Nicolaus (Nicky) and Gaby Hahn who discovered their love for California wines during several visits to the area. They eventually purchased two neighboring Monterey County horse and cattle ranches that had been converted to vineyard property, now the current home of Hahn Estate. Sensing the potential of the region, Nicky Hahn became a catalyst for the Santa Lucia Highlands (SLH) appellation by spearheading efforts in 1988 to establish an American Viticulture Area (AVA) for this wine growing region. Today Hahn owns the largest share of planted Pinot Noir in the Santa Lucia Highlands with more than 650 vineyard acres that range in elevation from 200 to 1,200 feet and offers a diverse selection of terroir. With a majority of these vineyards planted to 17 different clones of Pinot Noir, Hahn has established itself as one of the finest producers of this popular varietal. For visitors, this vast collection of estate vineyards provides one of the most gorgeous settings for enjoying wine and learning about the art of winemaking. Standing atop the estate vineyard and visitors center, wine lovers will be treated to one of Californias most beautiful panoramic views of wine country and the Salinas Valley. Hahn Estate offers wine tasting experiences for novices and connoisseurs alike. That includes wine tastings featuring Hahns diverse collection, including Hahn Winery, Hahn SLH Estate and Lucienne. Go behind the scene of the Hahn Estate with a winery tour, followed by a leisurely stroll to the demonstration vineyard for an insiders look at the history and significance of the Santa Lucia Highlands. For the more adventurous, enjoy a private ATV safari through the vineyards that features a spectacular view at the upper reaches of the Hahn Estate before visiting the wine cellar and finishing with a Reserve Tasting in the VIP room. New for 2012, Hahn Estate has launched several epicurean tasting programs for those interested in discovering new food and wine pairings. This includes Wine Country Tapas, an assortment of three seasonal small plates created by Estate Chef Brian Overhauser and paired with wines from the Estate. Or, enjoy Fromage Fridays, a complimentary cheese and wine pairing to entice the palate.
HAHN ESTATE Open Monday to Friday from 12 to 5 p.m. Saturday & Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. 37700 Foothill Road, Soledad, CA 93960 For more information, or to arrange a visit to the winery, go to www.hahnwinery.com or call (831) 678-4555 Download a free Hahn Family Wines phone application from iTunes or Android Market.

The Mendocino County town of Boonville in the verdant Anderson Valley has its own fascinating story. In fact, it even has its own vocabulary, called Boontling. The Zina Hyde Cunningham Winery has a pretty interesting story as well. The winerys history began in Maine (about as far from Boonville as you can get), then to San Francisco during the Gold Rush then, to Mendocino County after stopovers in Windsor and Kenwood, where winery founder and winemaker Zina Hyde added to his landholdings by buying ranch property. As with many prosperous and respected wineries, the ill-fated Volstead Act, which mandated Prohibition, all but destroyed the winery that had taken decades of hard work and dedication to build. But fast-forward half a century or more, to 2004 when Bill Cunningham, with the encouragement of his cousin Steve Ledson, a prominent winery owner and winemaker in his own right, encouraged him to restore the label that had roots going back nearly 150 years. You can discover the result when you visit the architecturally superb tasting room on the towns main street, across from the Boonville Hotel and near restaurants, cafs and galleries. The tasting menu is comprehensive, to say the least, since the wines that Zina Hyde Cunningham produces include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gewrztraminer, Ros, Pinot Noir, Carignane, Zinfandel, Barbera, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah. Many of the bottlings are listed as reserve, and there are also such limited-production dessert wine rarities as a Late Harvest Primitivo Sweet Kerry Port, an Orange Muscat (plus an Orange Muscat Port), and a Russian River Demi Sec Riesling. In fact, most of their wines are made in small lots, which is why many people subscribe to their futures program, to make sure they can get the wines they covet. Luckily, to help you decide, you can go to the tasting room and sample, either indoors at the handsome bar, or out on the front porch, where you can take a bottle (the tasting room folks will open it for you and loan you glasses) and perhaps get something from the charming and delightful market right next door in this period building. There are also picnic tables out back, by the bocce courts, should you be feeling borderline athletic.

BALDACCI FAMILY VINEYARDS Open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment (just call). 6236 Silverado Trail, Napa, CA 94558 About ten miles from Napa and five minutes from Yountville (707) 944-9261 | www.baldaccivineyards.com Theyre also on Facebook and Twitter.
If you live in the wine country long enough, youll find out pretty quickly that when friends and friends-of-friends visit, you become a de facto travel guide. To make matters easier I made up a list of wineries that I could print out and keep on hand. For years, Baldacci Family Vineyards on the Silverado Trail has been on the list, and from the comments I have received from everyone whos been there, Baldacci has deserved to be on the list. Having been there recently, it deserves it now more than ever. The winery is the realization of a dream that Tom and Brenda Baldacci had for a long time, one that began to come together with the purchase of this 17-acre property in the Stags Leap district in 1997. From the very beginning, the winery has combined a passion for winemaking with the tradition of family. The winery tasting room is like being in the private wine cellar of a friends home, in this case, a restored Napa farm house with two compact granite-topped tasting bars. It is wine country casual with great attention to detail and charming understatement. The terrace is the same, as is the pathway to the 4,000 square feet of humidity- and naturally temperature-controlled caves carved into the knoll. As you sit outdoors and enjoy their wine, look across the vineyards that are at the core of the winerys estate Cabernet Sauvignon program. These grapes reach their maximum potential and create exceptional tannic structure and concentrated flavors essential elements of their wine. New to the property is their Cellar Reserve Room, with thick stone walls and perfectly set tables for tasting in a venue that is both rustic and refined. A wine that shows the commitment to both family and quality is the IV Sons Cabernet Sauvignon, named for the four Baldacci sons. Then there are the four elements: it is always crafted of Cabernet Sauvignon and a bit of Cabernet Franc, and the wine is aged in French and American oak barrels. The result is a wine filled with fig and black cherry nuances. Other wines wearing the Baldacci label are Pinot Noir and more Cabernet Sauvignon. The Allwin Syrah is another favorite, as is the limited-production Gewrztraminer and a wine that never fails to delight and surprise is their Chardonnay. But then, you need to visit, decide for yourself and, most of all, enjoy every moment of the experience.

WINEMAKER PROFILE
RANDY ULLOM
Overseeing the Entire Kendall-Jackson Portfolio Since 1997
BY ABIGAIL P. ZIMMERMAN
I look at all of the vineyards we own, and all of the individual lots of wines that we make, and the thousands of barrels we have sitting in our cellar and sometimes I think, you gotta be kidding me! After Ive sufficiently recovered from my daily panic attack, I take off my coat, dig in my heels and take it one barrel at a time. Its a rewarding job that I love. RANDY ULLOM
KENDALL JACKSON WINE CENTER Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 5007 Fulton Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95439 (707) 571-8100 | www.kj.com
Randy Ullom found his start to becoming King of Americas most famous Chardonnay brand Kendall-Jackson by way of being a college ski bum in South America. As a college student in Utah, Randy felt set apart first for his preference for wine over beer and second for his wanderlust penchant for skiing. Even though I was studying Mining and Engineering, I mostly majored in skiing. Part way through school, Randy took a leave of absence to ski in Chile. Three months hiatus became three years! Randy felt welcome in early 1970s Chile. Locals befriended him and Randy reveled in Chilean culture, especially enjoying wine each night. Wine at dinner was a staple, explains Randy. There was a white wine glass and a red wine glass at the table every night. The father of a local friend took the time to explain the nuances of grapes, cultivation and wine. Randy may have lived in Chile indefinitely had political instability and a dangerous new regime not sent Randy back to America. Once home, Randy delved into Crop Production with a specialty in Viticulture and Enology at Ohio State. Initially selecting the University to be near family, Randy soon found a home within the thriving regional grape-growing belt surrounding the Great Lakes. After earning his degree in 1975, Randy worked in Ohio and New York before coming to California in 1981 to work the next decade with renowned winemaker Cecil De Loach. Then, Jess came calling. This year, Im wrapping up 19, entering my 20th year here with Jess and family! And legions of American wine lovers can be thankful. Randys astute palate and hard work ethic combine to preserve and expand the wine legacy that is the Kendall-Jackson brand. Men and women across the nation toast each other with Kendall-Jackson wines and it is Randy who we may thank for the nationally distributed Vintners Reserve Chardonnay which is not just Gold Medal wine but also the enological point for wine enthusiasts to begin exploring their own palate and seek even more diversity in their glasses. When people come to taste at Kendall-Jackson, theyll be pleased to find many different tiers of Chardonnay. Indeed, Kendall-Jackson produces distinguished single vineyard, single block, even single clone Chardonnay in California. My palate was quite aligned with Jessand we understood how to make that 200 case, $85 per bottle Chardonnay as well as the larger volume Vintners Reserve that America lovesWe understood the volumetrics, economics and quality aspects for the breadth of wines produced by Jackson Family Wines, explains Randy. Today, visitors to the Tasting Room on Healdsburg Square may select and savor higher end wines from the Grand Reserve, Jackson Hills and Highland Estate tiers as well as the Vintners Reserve wines available in the Fulton Road Tasting Room. Summarizes Randy, Just try our wines. Sip it. And a couple of sips leads to a glass which leads to a bottle, and the rest is history.

STATION 1870
Santa Rosas Newest and Most Vibrant Wine Bar
BY ABIGAIL P. ZIMMERMAN
STATION 1870 Open Tuesday through Saturday from 4 to 10 p.m. 123 Fourth Street, Santa Rosa, CA 95401 (707) 623-9619 | www.station1870.com Facebook | Twitter
Station 1870 is the new wine spot in historic Railroad Square. Named for the year the very first locomotive train arrived into downtown Santa Rosa, Station 1870 is a rich, comfortably sophisticated night spot to mix and mingle with old and new friends. Station 1870 is owned by Clay Fritz and boasts eight labels and 22 different wines available by the glass or bottle each night. Illustrious labels such as Lost Canyon, Fritz Estate and Rocca Caselli (Italy) are only a few of the fine wines on hand at Station 1870. Born into an important name in Sonoma wine, Fritz utilizes his legacy in fine wine production to not just serve his namesake wines but also to pour select, limited release labels he has acquired here in California or imported from Italy. Married to an Italian American, Fritz has also honed his palate for Italian produced Prosecco, Brunello and Chianti all of which are available nightly at Station 1870. Want a new, delicious way to wrap up a busy day or enjoy waiting for your table at any of the fantastic restaurants in Railroad Square? Stop in to Station 1870 and start with a very special glass of NV Loriella Prosecco paired with a piece of holy-cow-amazing Salt Side Down Meyer Lemon Infused White Chocolate Truffle. This treat brings out an array of citrus undertones and refreshing brightness in the wine. It is just the right amount of decadence to put a smile on your face! ($8 for the pairing). Be sure to also try the 2010 Vino Valpredo Bianca Mia. A unique blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, this alluring white wine marries a bouquet of white peach, nectarine and key lime with a rich, smooth finish of orange peel and sweet tea leaf ($8 by the glass/$24 by the bottle). Wines are also available by the flight. Selected regularly by wine stewards, each wine flight consists of a 2-oz pour of three or four different wines. This is an ideal way to taste through many wines without having to commit to a full glass. Choose from the White Wine Flight ($8), Pinot Noir Flight ($10) and Red Wine Flight ($12). Subsequently, each wine will also be available for purchase by the full glass or bottle. Whether you come for the great wine or the sexy atmosphere and warm welcome, Station 1870 is a wine bar sure to be a favorite.

Sonoma Plaza, a National Historic Landmark, is originally home to the last of the chain of 21 California missions. Throughout its colorful history including the Bear Flag Revolt where the California state flag was first raised in 1842 the small-town epicenter is now home to some 25 gourmet dining establishments, 40 boutique shops and art galleries as well as 18 unique tasting rooms. A well-known tourist destination, visitors come to Sonoma to experience the idyllic Wine Country lifestyle. Sure, doublewide tractors may grace the two-lane Highway 12, wide-open ranchlands blanket the valley between towns, and wooly sheep keep weeds and grasses minimal in the vineyards. But, no doubt, you will also find countless award-winning wineries and world-class restaurants in Sonoma. Sonoma is all about life, about taste and enjoying each day.

Wine enthusiasts can admire the breath-taking views of a 16acre Cabernet vineyard sprawled along Greenville Road, perfectly situated on top of a hill in Livermore. McGrail Vineyards and Winery specializes in 100-percent, estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. McGrail won the Sweepstakes Red Wine Award from the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition this year for its flagship wine, the 2008 McGrail Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. We farm it to the highest degree for quality. We drop fruit several times throughout the year and we strive for the best fruit possible, said Heather McGrail, McGrail Vineyards and Winery President. The winery ages its wine for 30 months in oak barrels. The extra time in the barrel helps integrate the flavors. They also taste each and every barrel before finalizing its blend which ensures top quality. Jim and Ginger McGrail opened McGrail Vineyards and Winery in 2008 with the help of their daughter, Heather McGrail. The McGrails have been growing grapes for the last 12 years for the Steven Kent Winery. In 2009, they hired Mark Clarin as winemaker and the rest is history. We use the time honored method of producing wine; start with good grapes and dont mess it up, Heather McGrail said. Our winery is all about fun, family and friends. According to her, the Petite Sirah and Chardonnay are other popular selections. The Chardonnay is a California style Chardonnay with fruit notes, oak and butter. The Petite Sirah is grown from the fruit of a family friend and neighbor, Julio Covarrubias. It has blueberry notes, dark fruit and dry tannins. Two wines were released this year, a dry Cabernet Sauvignon Ros and a 2009 Reserve Cabernet that will be released in July. When the tasting room originally opened they poured only one wine, the 2005 Reserve Cabernet, the same recipe but different vintage. Each year, they work at improving this wine while keeping it consistent with previous vintages. Its exciting that three vintages later we have successfully created a wine that receives such high honors, Heather McGrail said. She says besides sampling the award winning wines, guests always have the opportunity to meet someone from the family at the winery on any certain day. The tasting room is open Friday through Monday and by appointment Tuesday through Thursday. They offer private vineyard tours as well as private tastings for groups or events. For more information, call (925) 215-0717 or visit the website at www.mcgrailvineyards.com.
Music and wine lovers can have the both of best worlds by tasting musically inspired wines with live music by the singer/winemaker who goes by the name: The Singing Winemaker (aka Steve Powell). Steves signature wines are his red varietals but he offers every type of wine ranging from Dolcissimo, a musical term meaning very sweetly for a Cabernet Sauvignon blush; a white Scherzando, (musical term for playful) for his, light summer white wine; a tawny Port; a late harvest Zin dessert wine along with peach, raspberry and almond sparkling wines. We focus on red but provide wine for all palates, there is something in the tasting room for everyone, he said. We have great wines and the best wine tasting experience. The Singing Winemaker has not released a new red wine in a year, so this summer he is back in action, releasing six wines. Each will have a release party during the summer with wine and food pairings for guests and of course, music for every age and taste performed by The Singing Winemaker. Many of his wines have musical names including his Harmony blend made with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Old Vine Zinfandel. The Singing Winemakers popular Melody which is a blend of Malbec and Tempranillo is always a crowd pleaser along with another favorite, Amador County Barbera, which is a robust Italian varietal.

Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group Gourmet Grazing on the Green Food & Wine Festival To Be Held on September 15
The 9th annual Gourmet Grazing on the Green, a fabulous festival featuring the best local food, wine and beer, supports the Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group. The Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for people living with cancer in the Santa Cruz community. Working with a dedicated group of volunteers and partners the organization raises community consciousness through events and outreach and provides vital financial support for several Santa Cruz beneficiary organizations including Hospice of Santa Cruz, Jacobs Heart Childrens Cancer Association and University of California at Santa Cruz. Held at beautiful Aptos Village Park on Saturday, September 15th from 12 to 5 p.m., Grazing on the Green is a fun-filled day of fine wine, excellent food, locally crafted beers and live music! Spend the afternoon sampling the delicious flavors from dozens of the finest local restaurants and local wineries as well as breweries. Also, Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group is honored to welcome attendees to meet and greet the Beneficiaries who are our special guests at the event. Beneficiaries include Hospice of Santa Cruz County, Jacobs Heart Childrens Cancer Association, Katz Cancer Resource Center, WomenCARE Cancer Advocacy and University of California at Santa Cruz. Ticket prices include food, wine and beer tastings all day. Plus a wine glass. By purchasing a $65 ticket to this food and wine festival, attendees are raising funds for the Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group (SCCBG) while getting to attend a fun day for foodies and winelovers. There will be a huge selection of Santa Cruz restaurants and local wineries and breweries that are participating in the 2012 event as well as local farmers who have donated produce for the Gourmet Grazing event; this list includes Coke Farms, Route One, Earthbound Farms, New Natives and Watsonville Coast Produce. Tickets include admission to the event, special souvenir wine glass, and a day of food, wine and beer tasting. Purchase tickets online or at local New Leaf Markets. If you know a few people who want to attend, take advantage of group discounts: 10 tickets for $500. SCCBG has funded cancer research and local groups including many that support people living with cancer since 1995. SCCBG was started by a small group of friends who used to play tennis together once a week; they had each lost a relative or friend to cancer and wanted to do something to make a difference. The first event the organization hosted was a Spring Forward Against Cancer Tennis Tournament and Celebration; these tournaments are still held each year. Proceeds from this years Gourmet Grazing benefit these local cancer support and research organizations: Hospice of Santa Cruz County, Jacobs Heart Childrens Cancer Support and Services, The Katz Cancer Resource Center, UC Santa Cruz Cancer Research and WomenCARE. Participating restaurants include Caf Cruz, Chaminade Resort & Spa, Hulas Island Grill, Beast BBQ, Johnnys Harborside, Shadowbrook Restaurant, The Whole Enchilada and Zameen Mediterranean Cuisine.
