Pressure-Temperature Ratings Pressure-Temperature Ratings

Shurjoint has incorporated the ASME/ANSI nominal pressure-temperature rating method, to identify and describe working pressures of grooved mechanical components, so that engineers and designers can select Shurjoint components in the same manner and method that they do when selecting other fittings, flanges, valves, pumps and other piping components.
Refer to the chart of Pressure-Temperature Ratings for Class 125, 150, 250, 300 and 400 shown on the next page. Maximum working pressures shown in this catalog are rounded numbers rather than those specified in ASME/ANSI standards. All pressure ratings shown in this catalog are based on use of cut or roll-grooved standard weight (STD) carbon steel pipe within a temperature range of -20F to +100F (-29C to +38C).

Service temperatures
Service temperatures are limited by the flow media and gasket grade. For additional information, please refer to the Gasket selection guides (Shurjoint cut sheet #B-03).

Vacuum Service
Standard Shurjoint gaskets are designed to seal well under vacuum conditions up to 10 inHg (absolute)/254 mmHg (absolute) which may occur when a system is drained.

Class 125 175 psi 175 psi (12 Bar) Class 150 285 psi 300 psi (20 Bar) Class 250 400 psi 400 psi (28 Bar) Class 300 740 psi 750 psi (52 Bar) Class 400 990 psi 1000 psi (70 Bar) Pressures are shown in psi (pounds per square inches) and temperatures in Fahrenheit (F) with converted pressures in Bar (MPa x 10) and temperatures in Celsius (C).

The performance parameters of grooved mechanical components will vary depending on the pipe wall thickness, material, diameter and the type of grooves processed. For example the pressure rating of a Class 150 coupling used on schedule 7 pipe would be lower than that of the same coupling used on standard wall pipe. Refer to the Performance Data Sheet, shown on Shurjoint cut sheet #B39, for actual working pressures at ambient temperatures (or CWP - cold working pressures) for each pipe schedule or wall thickness of carbon steel and stainless steel pipes. Proof test pressures are 1.5 times the maximum working pressures (non-shock cold water). Burst test pressures are minimum 3 times the maximum working pressures for sizes up to 12 and minimum 2 times for sizes 14 and above.
CWP (Cold working pressure) Pressure ratings of grooved components that do not conform to the applicable ASME/ANSI pressure-temperature ratings are shown in CWP. Grooved components used for fire protection systems shall be listed by UL and or approved by FM and or other approval bodies such as VdS, LPCB, etc., as may be required by local authorities and or codes. Refer to the Approved Pressure Ratings by UL and FM which are shown at Shurjoint cut sheet #B40. Pressure ratings of some valves that are designed to MSS standards are also shown in CWP.
