Keeping Standards up-to-date

Standards are living documents which reflect progress in science, technology and
systems. To maintain their currency, all Standards are periodically reviewed, and
new editions are published. Between editions, amendments may be issued. Standards
may also be withdrawn. It is important that readers assure themselves they are using
a current Standard, which should include any amendments which may have been
published since the Standard was purchased.
Detailed information about Standards can be found by visiting the Standards
Australia web site at www.standards.com.au and looking up the relevant Standard in
the on-line catalogue.
Alternatively, the printed Catalogue provides information current at 1 January each
year, and the monthly magazine, The Australian Standard, has a full listing of
revisions and amendments published each month.
We also welcome suggestions for the improvement in our Standards, and especially
encourage readers to notify us immediately of any apparent inaccuracies or
ambiguities. Contact us via email at mail@standards.com.au, or write to the Chief
Executive, Standards Australia International Ltd, PO Box 1055, Strathfield,
NSW 2135.

This Standard was issued in draft form for comment as DR 98402.

PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand
Committee WS/16, Cast Iron Pressure Pipes and Fittings, to supersede AS 4181—1994.
This Standard is the result of a consensus among Australia/New Zealand representatives on
the Committee to produce it as an Australian Standard.
The objective of this Standard is to include design, materials and type tests required for
stainless steel clamps.
This edition includes modification to materials and fabrication requirements and an
additional appendix to demonstrate means for demonstrating compliance with this Standard.
The terms ‘normative’ and ‘informative’ have been used in this Standard to define the
application of the appendix to which they apply. A ‘normative’ appendix is an integral part

of a Standard, whereas an ‘informative’ appendix is only for information and guidance.

Statements expressed in mandatory terms in notes to tables and figures are deemed to be
requirements of this Standard.
Support and contribution is acknowledged from water authorities, manufacturers, importers
and Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA).

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA

Australian Standard
Stainless steel clamps for waterworks purposes

1 SCOPE
This Standard specifies the requirements for stainless steel clamps for waterworks purposes.

2 APPLICATION
Stainless steel clamps complying with this Standard are intended for use in the repair or
tapping of water supply pipelines of the sizes designated in Table 1, with a maximum

service temperature of 60°C and up to an allowable operating pressure of 1.6 MPa. Repair
clamps have limited ability to accommodate axial deflection and are, therefore, not
generally intended for use as couplings to join two pipes together. However, they are
commonly utilised for repair situations at full pipe break, where the pipe ends are
considered stable.
This Standard does not cover stainless steel tapping saddles whose minimum lengths in
Table 1 are not met and whose seal is not fully circumferential.
Means for demonstrating compliance with this Standard are given in Appendix A.
