Surgical dressings
1 SCOPE This Standard sets out requirements for single-use absorbent woven gauze
swabs for surgical use. It applies to sterile and non-sterile swabs and swabs that
incorporate X-ray detectable markers.
NOTE: This Standard is not applicable to ‘dissecting swabs’ such as ‘cherries’, ‘peanuts’ and
‘patties’.

3 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Standard, the definitions below apply.
3.1 Green gauze swab — green absorbent woven gauze, folded into a rectangle or
square, and used only by anaesthetists.
3.2 White gauze swab — white absorbent woven gauze, folded into a rectangle or
square, and used for dressing purposes.
3.3 Packs
3.3.1 Unit packs — a pack providing a microbial barrier and containing a stated number
of the particular gauze swab.
3.3.2 Multiple packs —a pack containing one or more sterile unit packs, or a pack
containing one or more non-sterile gauze swabs.
3.3.3 Store pack—a pack containing one or more multiple packs.
3.4 X-ray detectable gauze swab A white gauze swab which incorporates an X-ray
detectable marker and is used for surgical purposes within operating suites.
