Who We Are
Our History
More than a half-century ago, the leaders of Columbia International University (CIU) had a vision for a model schoola center of influence in the Christian school movementthat would instill thorough Christian discipleship, high academic standards, and a call to world evangelization. This vision, coupled with faith and courage, gave Our Mission birth to Ben Lippen School (BLS) in 1940. The name Ben Lippen, a Ben Lippen School seeks Scottish phrase meaning Mountain of Trust, captures the essence to glorify God by assisting upon which Ben Lippen was founded. Before becoming a Christian school, Ben Lippen was a summer conference center operated by CIU (formerly Columbia Bible College), providing respite from the summer heat of Columbia, South Carolina. The cool mountain air of western North Carolina served as a beautiful and restful setting for those serving in fulltime and lay ministry to receive encouragement and training.

the family and church in equipping students spiritually, academically, and socially under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

Robert C. McQuilkin, CIUs first president, realized that Ben Lippen was only being used three months out of the year and that it could meet another needa need for quality Christian education for the children of missionaries. In 1940 Ben Lippen opened its doors to high school boys.

The elementary program was launched in 1990 when Ben Lippen Elementary School opened in the facilities of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Irmo, South Carolina. In 1996, a second elementary school, Ben Lippen Northeast, was opened using space at Spears Creek Baptist Church in Elgin, South Carolina. Currently, Ben Lippen Elementary School has two locations owned by the schoolthe Monticello Road Campus and the St. Andrews Road Campus. Today Ben Lippen is comprised of nearly 800 students. Families served by Ben Lippen represent over 115 local churches and 15 foreign countries. Ben Lippen continues its tradition to serve as a model of academic distinction. Graduates are accepted to some of the finest colleges and universities . The result is generation after generation of Ben Lippen alumni who build their lives on biblical values and contribute to society as doctors, lawyers, missionaries, pastors, business leaders, military personnel, husbands and wives, and dads and moms.

Our Vision A Ben Lippen School graduate influences the world by demonstrating lifelong commitment to loving and obeying God, pursuing biblical truth, and humbly serving others.

In 1952 when Robertson McQuilkin, son of Robert C. McQuilkin and 1944 Ben Lippen graduate, was named Ben Lippens headmaster, the school became coeducational. It flourished as a secondary school. In December of 1980, a fire destroyed Ben Lippens primary building. Years of planning to rebuild did not come to fruition. In 1988, Ben Lippen moved to new facilities adjoining the CIU campus in Columbia. Over 200 boarding and day students in grades seven through 12 enrolled at the new campus.

Who We Are (continued)

Our Distinctives
Ben Lippen is a Christian college and calling preparatory school. One hundred percent of our graduates are accepted into college. The 93 members of the graduating class of 2012 earned $3.5 million in renewable scholarships. Ben Lippen has produced 38 National Merit Scholars during the past 16 years. Ben Lippen students outscore 81 percent of their peers (nationally) on the complete battery of the Stanford Achievement Test. As early as eighth grade, Ben Lippen students begin individual testing and guidance counseling related to aptitudes, interests and abilities to prepare for their next steps after high school. Nearly 60 percent of Ben Lippen full-time faculty have obtained or are working toward an advanced degree. Twenty percent of Ben Lippen high school students are international boarding students who live on campus. This provides an enriching cross-cultural experience for both day and boarding students. All Ben Lippen students in grades Pre-K through 12 participate in weekly chapel services. A Ben Lippen student is engaged in active Bible study and discussion for approximately 180 hours per year.

Our Logos
Ben Lippen School has a rich heritage which is captured in the schools Seal .
Green symbolizes life and the spiritual, academic, and social growth which we aspire for every student. Ben Lippen is a Scottish phrase meaning Mountain of Trust.

A reminder that we serve the King of Kings.

The Asheville campus was surrounded by trees. Trees also suggest the bearing of fruit which we desire for our graduates. The Columbia campus is also encircled by many trees.

The school originated on top of a mountain in Asheville, NC and now resides at the highest point in Columbia, SC. In fact, the word Monticello (the street on which the campus is located) means little mountain.

Gold symbolizes the glory of God.

This verse describes the life of victory upon which Columbia Bible College (now Columbia International University) and Ben Lippen were founded. Ben Lippen began in 1940 in Asheville, NC. We moved to Columbia, SC in 1988.

How To Support Ben Lippen School

Ben Lippen has two sources of income tuition and tax-deductible gifts and both are essential to fulfilling our mission of developing Christian scholars. The Mountain of Trust Fund (MOTF) annually raises money to support ongoing and special projects of the school. Energized parents, in collaboration with Ben Lippens leadership, direct the MOTF. In Spring 2012, the MOTF announced the completion of Phase One of the Steve Caswell Athletic Center, which includes a new weight room and classroom. Phase Two of this project is currently underway, and includes bleachers, upgraded lighting and sound, repairs to the floor, and renovation of the lobby area. In addition to this and other initiatives of the MOTF, raising $200,000 for financial assistance is a key distinctive of our school. Proceeds from two annual fund-raising events, Cedar Creek Classic and TEE UP for Students, and a portion of the proceeds of the Ben Lippen Bazaar are earmarked for the Mountain of Trust Financial Aid Fund. Every family is encouraged to get involved in one or all events as a participant, sponsor, planning committee member, or event day volunteer. Contact Kyndra Waganer at kyndra.waganer@benlippen.com.

Ben Lippen Bazaar This is a new fall event offering school-sponsored groups an opportunity to raise money for their own projects and/or needs. Cedar Creek Classic Now the largest such event in the Midlands, this 14-station/100 bird sporting clays event is held the last Saturday in April. TEE UP for Students This is an 18-hole captains choice golf outing typically held on the last Monday in October.

Tax-deductible gifts may be made online at www.BenLippen.com or mailed to the school. While cash, checks, and credit card gifts are most common, more gifting options exist such as electronic funds transfer (EFT), stock gifts and other appreciated assets. Contact bonnie.spacek@benlippen.com to speak confidentially about your charitable support of Ben Lippen School. Watch for future communications about the 2012-2013 initiatives of the Mountain of Trust Fund.

Additional Resources for Faculty and Staff

Ben Lippen School

Attire Guidelines
As Christian professionals, the faculty and staff of Ben Lippen School recognizes that the way we are perceived by our students, parents and the community is influenced by how we dress and present ourselves. Therefore, our dress code is designed to honor the Lord, support a Christian testimony, represent with excellence the mission of our school, and set a positive example for our students.

Basic Guidelines
To enhance the mission of training Christian scholars at Ben Lippen and project the professionalism we expect of ourselves, the following guidelines are given: Faculty and staff members will dress in a well-groomed manner. Dress is to be professional, neat, and modest, and should convey an attitude of respect. Dress is to be appropriate to each individuals position and the nature of the work performed. The faculty and staffs attitude in adhering to the stated dress code should present to the student body a model of joyful submission.

Female Faculty and Staff

Dress Code for Official Occasions Official occasion attire includes suits, dresses and dressy pant suits. Dressy shoes coordinated with the outfit (as stated in the classroom/daily dress code) are appropriate. Attire for graduation is a dress or suit which does not extend below the length of the graduation gown. If the dress extends below the graduation gown it must be black or dark blue in color. Dressy shoes (no sandals) of a dark color (black, dark blue or dark brown) should be worn for the graduation ceremony. Dress for Classroom/Daily Office Duties Professional dress includes: Dresses or skirts (modesty reflected in length, slit openings, and style). Dress slacks that are neat and fit modestly. (Elementary teachers are allowed to wear pants of more casual material, i.e. twill or denim, with a double-stitched inseam.) Blouses, sweaters, jackets, and blazers coordinated with skirts and dressy slacks. These are dressy rather than casual, and present a professional appearance. Tops which are long enough to prevent skin from showing when arms are raised. Sleeveless tops must be non-revealing (with the edge at the shoulder). It is preferred that sleeveless tops are worn under a sweater, jacket or blazer. Casual tops must fit modestly and should be dressed up with an appropriate necklace, scarf or jacket. Capri/crop slacks that are made of dressy material and are approximately mid-calf in length. Shoes - heels, flats, open-toed shoes, dressy open shoes (sandals) with a raised back/heel. Hair neat and clean. Unprofessional attire includes: Casual pants (double stitched side seams, jeans and cotton knit pants). Capri slacks just below the knee in length. Shirts - polo-style shirts, sweatshirts. Shorts.
A ministry of Columbia International University

31

Attire Guidelines (continued)

Tight-fitting sheer or revealing clothing. Un-ironed, wrinkled, or faded clothing. Shoes - athletic shoes, flip-flops, Crocs, shoes that are in disrepair or worn looking. Hair extreme styles and coloring. Jewelry distracting or inappropriate for age, facial piercings (nose, tongue, lip). Body art visible tattoos are discouraged and may be limited at the discretion of the administration.

Friday Wear The professional dress code for classroom/daily duties is always appropriate for Fridays. Two exceptions apply to Friday wear for female faculty and staff: jeans of a solid color that do not give the appearance of excessive wear may be worn on Fridays. Additionally, Ben Lippen logo polo shirts may be worn. Dress Code for Other Occasions As with every area of the dress code, attire for other occasions should be modest, represent with excellence the mission of Ben Lippen, and set a positive example for the students. Because the events in this category vary significantly in purpose and type, faculty members should follow the specific guidelines established for, and stated with, each activity. PE Instructor and Coaching Staff The attire of Ben Lippen PE teachers and coaches should promote the image of a coaching professional and instructor; not just the physical activity of the day. Professional dress includes: Shorts (at least four inch inseam). Collared polo-style shirt. Athletic shoes with socks. Ben Lippen tee shirts/athletic shirts that are in good repair and neat in appearance. Sweatpants as weather dictates. Unprofessional attire includes: Tank tops. Non-Ben Lippen logo shirts. Sandals. Cotton sweat pants. Spandex clothing. Form-fitting clothing. Summer Dress Code As professionals, we recognize that our attire conveys a message to our students, parents and community regarding the quality of Ben Lippens program. Therefore, faculty members who are teaching/tutoring students on the campus and staff members working in school offices during the summer should follow the same guidelines as stated for the regular school year. Summertime is, however, a time for reorganizing, cleaning, and arranging the physical environment at Ben Lippen. As a result, more casual clothing may be worn when the scheduled activities for the day warrant a change. This could include jeans and casual tops. Shorts, however, should not be worn in the office. 32

Because the events in this category vary significantly in purpose and type, faculty members should follow the specific guidelines established for, and stated with, each activity. Dress Code for PE and Coaching Staff The attire of Ben Lippen PE teachers and coaches should promote the image of a coaching professional and instructor; not just the physical activity of the day. Athletic shoes are appropriate only for PE and coaching. Modestly styled, loose fitting walking-length shorts or sweat pants may be worn. Collared shirts, sweatshirts or regular student PE uniform shirts may be worn. Shirts are to be worn at all times.

Branding
The American Marketing Association (AMA) defines a brand as a name, term, sign, symbol or design, or a combination of them intended to identify the goods and services of one seller or group of sellers and to differentiate them from those of other sellers.

Identity and Style Guidelines

Each of us plays an important role in branding Ben Lippen School. While the Office of Corporate Marketing and Communications is charged with the marketing communications, make no mistake that it is the sum of all parts of the Ben Lippen experience which indeed brands or differentiates us. The following communication guidelines uphold our branding efforts. If you have questions, please contact the Office of Corporate Marketing and Communications at (803) 807-5535.

One strategy for promoting events, initiatives, etc. is adding signature plates to ones email signature. Everyone who receives your email will be alerted to the event. Signature plates may be hyperlinked to a website or Web page so that readers may click to learn more. For example, this signature plate was created to use when promoting BLS Campus Tours. How do I get a signature plate? When the Office of Corporate Marketing and Communications creates a new signature plate it will be made available to all faculty and staff through email. How do I add a signature plate to my e-mail signature? For Mac Users (Mac Mail): Choose Preferences from the Mail application menu and click Signatures. For PC Users (Outlook): From the main Microsoft Outlook window, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab.
