AUGUST 5, 2012 EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THE BREAD OF LIFE

Todays Gospel has the crowd asking Jesus three questions. First, When did you get here, to which Jesus responds by rebuking them for their failure to grasp his miracle as a sign, an occasion to put faith in him. Their second question about accomplishing the works of God has Jesus respond that faith is the work that God wishes. Many scholars believe this is Johns answer to the faith-works dichotomy emerging in the early Christian community. Faith is the work of God in the believer, John would have us understand. The third question asked by the crowd is a request for a sign that would allow them to put faith in Jesus, as the manna in the desert allowed the Israelites to put faith in the Lord God. Jesus answers by revealing himself as the bread of life that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Third Mailing and Pledge Reminders

A third request for a contribution to the 2012 Catholic Ministries Appeal is in the mail to all parishioners who have not made a contribution. The Appeal provides critical funding to diocesan ministries that serve individuals and parishes throughout the Diocese of Joliet. It also provides refunds of 50% of the cash received (not pledged) over the parish goal to each parish. If you receive this mailing, please respond generously. You will be helping both our diocese and our parish. Also, the sixth monthly reminders have been sent to those that made an in-pew pledge to the Appeal. Those that pledged by direct mail have already received payment coupons. Thank you for your gifts, and please make your payment as soon as possible. For your convenience, you can bring your pledge payments to Mass and place them in the basket. The parish will forward them to the diocese.

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

We would like to offer a hand crocheted or knitted prayer shawl, cape, or laprobe to anyone in the parish who needs to send them to a dear one struggling with life's loss or illness. The shawls are lovingly made so that your loved one may be wrapped with the all-encompassing love of Mary, the Mother of Mercy and Care; and God, the Father of Faithfulness, Healing, and Love. At our meetings on Wednesday from 1:00-3:00 PM in the East Room, we will support you through our prayers for restoring health and healing to your loved ones. In the church narthex, there will be a sign with instructions posted to request a prayer shawl. Bonnie Venezio's e-mail address is: rbvenezio@comcast.net and we will either e-mail or mail you a Request Form.

2012 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES ANNUAL APPEAL PLEDGE REPORT

Monthly pledge payments for the CMAA pledges should be made in the next few days. It is very important that these pledges be paid so that our parish will reach our goal. Once we have reached our goal in paid pledges, 50% of the additional funds received will be returned to the parish for our use.

Ten Commandments for Eucharistic Reverence

These Ten Commandments are taken from Our Reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist; O Come, Let Us Adore Him by Fr. Charles M. Mangan. Take time this week to work on this one commandment. We will continue to print one commandment each week. For an archive, please view previous bulletins on our website: www.ctklombard.org. I. Attend Holy Mass on Sundays and Holydays. Catholics are to go to Mass each Sunday and Holyday of Obligation. (To attend Mass during the week is an inestimable privilege and is strongly recommended by the Church.) A serious obligation, the grave precept to attend Mass on Sundays and Holydays of Obligation, begins for children when they reach the age of reason (that is, when they can distinguish between right and wrong). We participate in the Massthe greatest communication between the Almighty and His sons and daughtersby responding to the prayers and singing and listening attentively. We adore the Holy Eucharist by our full, active and conscious participation in the Mass during which Christ is made present through the power of the Holy Spirit as the priest prays: This is My Body. . . This is the Cup of My Blood.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, RCIA

Prayer for a spouse or child who is away from the Church.

For a spouse or child who is away from the Church. Jesus, you see how much I worry about my spouse/ child. You have given them the gift of faith. They have had the grace of receiving you in the Eucharist. But now for whatever reason they are wandering far from you. I know that you are right behind them, but Im not. Sometimes I get angry. Other times I argue with them. Often I just cant understand why they are looking elsewhere for what you alone can give them. Help me to calm myself. Open my heart to listen with compassion. Teach me to place them patiently and with trust into your kind and strong hands. When I am frightened for them, when I miss them beside me at Mass, be there also for me. Amen.

RCIA is not a program but a process of gradual conversion. The RCIA as a rite, marks stages along the path to full commitment in the Roman Catholic Church. The RCIA as formation gradually looks to the inner transformation of the individual to God's call as given week by week in the lectionary of Scripture readings. It also looks to Sunday Eucharist and to the gradual transformation of the person to become an active member of the local church wherever he or she lives. Do you know someone that would like to join the Catholic Church? Someone who is not baptized, someone baptized in another faith or someone that has not completed all of their Sacraments of Initiation. We are accepting interviews for committing to the process of conversion into full communion with the Catholic Church. If you know of someone or would like to join the RCIA team, please contact Eileen Maggiore at 630396-6076 or email eileene@ctklombard.org.

Hearing the Knock

In his June 2009 encyclical Caritas in Veritate, Pope Benedict XVI reminds the world that poverty will not be eradicated unless we rediscover and protect the sanctity of life at every level. Dismissing the unborn as less than human and allowing abortion impedes the work of social justice. He points out with urgency, While the poor of the world continue knocking on the doors of the rich, the world of affluence runs the risk of no longer hearing those knocks, on account of a conscience that can no longer distinguish what is human (n. 75). Ex 16:2-4, 12-15 Eph 4:17, 20-24 Jn 6:24-35 Human hunger is deeper than the physical, and the readings today point to Christ as the Bread of Life. He is foretold by the manna and continues to provide our daily bread in the Eucharist. In his encyclical Caritas in Veritate, Pope Benedict XVI states that Development must include not just material growth but also spiritual growth (n. 76). Todays readings help us to focus on both realities and on the interrelationship between the two. Moreover, they focus us on the fact that the spiritual growth we acquire in Christ, the Bread of Life, impels us to take on a whole new way of life, in which life itself is affirmed generously and the ways of the culture of death are rejected. Embracing life, particularly amidst economic difficulties, requires the kind of trust in God and human solidarity experienced by the Israelites on their journey in the desert. It requires the kind of trust, furthermore, that the promises of Christ inspire in his words in todays Gospel. Priests for Life

Prayer in Defense of Marriage

God our Father, we give you thanks for the gift of marriage: the bond of life and love, and the font of the family. The love of husband and wife enriches your Church with children, fills the world with a multitude of spiritual fruitfulness and service, and is the sign of the love of your Son, Jesus Christ, for his Church. The grace of Jesus flowed forth at Cana at the request of the Blessed Mother. May your Son, through the intercession of Mary, pour out upon us a new measure of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit as we join with all people of good will to promote and protect the unique beauty of marriage. May your Holy Spirit enlighten our society to treasure the heroic love of husband and wife, and guide our leaders to sustain and protect the singular place of mothers and fathers in the lives of their children. Father, we ask that our prayers be joined to those of the Virgin Mary, that your Word may transform our service so as to safeguard the incomparable splendor of marriage. We ask all these things through Christ our Lord, Amen. Saints Joachim and Anne, pray for us.

Marriage Love and Life in the Divine Plan

This is a pastoral letter by the Catholic Bishops of the United States. It can be found on the US Bishops website: http:// usccb.org/issues-and-action/ marriage-and-family/ . Christ the King will have a blessing for all married couples at each Mass on the weekend of August 18 & 19. We would especially like to honor marriages of 25 and 50 years by placing names in the bulletin. Please contact Eileen at eileen@ctklombard.org if you wish your names to be printed. Also that weekend after each Mass in the PLC will be two ten minute videos available for viewing: Made for Life and Made for each other.

YEAR OF FAITH October 11, 2012 November 24, 2013

The upcoming Year of Faith declared by Pope Benedict XVI is a summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Savior of the world. In other words, the Year of Faith is an opportunity for Catholics to experience a conversion to turn back to Jesus and enter into a deeper relationship with him. It is an opportunity for each and every Catholic to renew their baptismal call by living out the everyday moments of their lives with faith, hope and love. The first day of the Year of Faith is the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II) and also the twentieth anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. During the Year of Faith, Catholics are asked to study and reflect on the documents of Vatican II and the catechism so that they may deepen their knowledge of the faith.

Jesus is the bread of life given to us to transform our lives. Through Christ we become a new creation called to live in righteousness and holiness of truth. Attend the next Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend on August 10-12, 2012. Contact Tim and Pat Doyle, 630-577-0778. For more information visit our website at: wwmejoliet.org
