RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
RESEARCH DESIGN DESCRIPTIVE

Research design is considered as a "blueprint" for research, dealing with at least four problems: which questions to study, which data are relevant, what data to collect, and how to analyze the results. The best design depends on the research question as well as the orientation of the researcher. Every design has its positive and negative sides. In sociology, there are three basic designs, which are considered to generate reliable data; these are cross-sectional, longitudinal, and cross-sequential. Research design can be divided into fixed and flexible research designs (Robson, 1993). Others have referred to this distinction as quantitative research designs and qualitative research designs, respectively. However, fixed designs need not be quantitative, and flexible design need not be qualitative. In fixed designs, the design of the study is fixed before the main stage of data collection takes place. Fixed designs are normally theory driven; otherwise its impossible to know in advance which variables need to be controlled and measured. Often, these variables are measured quantitatively. Flexible designs allow for more freedom during the data collection process. One reason for using a flexible research design can be that the variable of interest is not quantitatively measurable, such as culture. In other cases, theory might not be available before one starts the research. Descriptive research, also known as statistical research, describes data and characteristics about the population or phenomenon being studied. However, it does not answer questions about eg: how/when/why the characteristics occurred, which is done under analytic research. DATA COLLECTION- PRIMARY DATA

Primary research consists of the collection of original primary data. It is often undertaken after the researcher has gained some insight into the issue by reviewing secondary research or by analyzing previously collected primary data. It can be accomplished through various methods, including questionnaires and telephone interviews in market research, or experiments and direct observations in the physical sciences, amongst others. SAMPLING TECHNIQUE- CONVINIENCE TECHNIQUE

sampling is concerned with the selection of a subset of individuals from within a population to estimate characteristics of the whole population. It is a sampling method in which units are selected based on easy access/availability.

SAMPLE SIZE- 10

Sample size determination is the act of choosing the number of observations or replicates to include in a statistical sample. The sample size is an important feature of any empirical study in which the goal is to make inferences about a population from a sample. In practice, the sample size used in a study is determined based on the expense of data collection, and the need to have sufficient statistical power.

Occupation

Chairperson and Editorial Director of Hindustan Times Group

16

Shobhana Bhartia (born 1957) is the Chairperson and Editorial Director of the Hindustan Times Group, one of India's newspaper and media houses. She has also recently taken charge as the Pro Chancellor of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. She looks after editorial as well as financial aspects, and is credite with raising Rs. 400 crore through a public equity launch of HT Media in September 2005.The name is sometimes written Shobhana Bharatiya or Bhartiya, but the preferred spelling is Bhartia. Background Bhartia is the daughter of the industrialist KK Birla, and granddaughter of GD Birla, one of the Birla family patriarchs. The KK Birla family owned 75.36 per cent stake in HT Media, valued at Rs 834 crore in 2004. She grew up in Kolkata and had her schooling at Loreto House. She is a graduate of Calcutta University, and is married to Shyam Sunder Bhartia, Chairman of the Rs. 14-billion pharmaceutical firm Jubilant Life Science Limited (a spinoff from the earlier chemicals venture Vam Organics). Shyam Sunder Bhartia is son of Late Mohan Lal Bhartia. Their son Shamit Bhartia is also a Director at the HT Media group, and also looks after lifestyle businesses such as the Domino's Pizza franchise and also convenience store chain Monday to Sunday in Bangalore. Media career When Bhartia joined Hindustan Times in 1986, she was the first woman chief executive of a national newspaper and probably one of the youngest. She is considered to be one of the motive forces behind the transformation of the Hindustan Times "into a bright, young paper." In February 2006, she was nominated to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of parliament, on a recommendation by the ruling United Progressive Alliance headed by Sonia Gandhi. The nomination, reserved for eminent people from the fields of literature, science, art and social service, was challenged in the Supreme Court of India on the grounds that she was a "media baron" and not a journalist, and that she was politically affiliated with the Indian National Congress. However, the court dismissed the appeal at the admission stage itself, saying that the scope of "social service" was broad enough to include her. She has been quite active in the Rajya Sabha, asking frequent questions and also introducing "The Child Marriage (Abolition) and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill, 2006". After the Congress government came to power in 2004, she was one of the first Padma Shri award nominees in 2005. The award was given for journalism, but critics have felt that she is more of a business person than a journalist. Both this Padma Shri award, as well as the Rajya Sabha nomination, both during the UPA regime, have led to claims that these are rewards for a certain bias towards the Indian National Congress, especially with respect to editorial policy at the Hindustan Times and particularly to Sonia Gandhi. She has received the Global Leader of Tomorrow award from the World Economic Forum (1996). She is also the recipient of the Outstanding Business Woman of the Year, 2001, by PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and National Press India Award, 1992. She has also won the
17

Business Woman award, The Economic Times Awards for Corporate Excellence awards 2007. She is currently the chair of Endeavor India. Hindustan TImes was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1924. Since then, the newspaper has established its presence as a newspaper with editorial excellence and integrity. One of India's leading and most respected English dailies, HT has always prided itself in spotting emerging trends and reflecting the same through its unmatched editorial prowess. Introduction to human resource department

The human resource department deals with management of people within the organisation. There are a number of responsibilities that come with this title. First of all, the Department is responsible for hiring members of staff; this will involve attracting employees, keeping them in their positions and ensuring that they perform to expectation. Besides , the Human Resource Department also clarifies and sets day to day goals for the organisation. It is responsible for organisation of people in the entire Company and plans for future ventures and objectives involving people in the Company.

Working profile of human resource department in Hindustan times

Business is all about people and how to manage them. Finding the right people and then managing them effectively in an organisation is a challenge and responsibility of HR department. HRM is concerned with getting better results with the collaboration of people. It is an integral but distinctive part of management, concerned with people at work and their relationships within the enterprise.Human resource management (HRM, or simply HR) is the management of an organization's workforce, or human resources. It is responsible for the attraction, selection, training, assessment, and rewarding of employees, while also overseeing organizational leadership and culture, and ensuring compliance with employment and labor laws. In circumstances where employees desire and are legally authorized
28

to hold a collective bargaining agreement, HR will typically also serve as the company's primary liaison with the employees' representatives (usually a labor union). In practice, HR is responsible for employee experience during the entire employment lifecycle. It is first charged with attracting the right employees through employer branding. It then must select the right employees through the recruitment process. HR then onboards new hires and oversees their training and development during their tenure with the organization. HR assesses talent through use of performance appraisals and then rewards them accordingly. In fulfillment of the latter, HR may sometimes administer payroll and employee benefits, although such activities are more and more being outsourced, with HR playing a more strategic role. Finally, HR is involved in employee terminations - including resignations, performance-related dismissals, and redundancies. At the macro-level, HR is in charge of overseeing organizational leadership and culture. HR also ensures compliance with employment and labor laws, which differ by geography, and often oversees health, safety, and security. In circumstances where employees desire and are legally authorized to hold a collective bargaining agreement, HR will typically also serve as the company's primary liaison with the employees' representatives (usually a labor union). Consequently, HR, usually through industry representatives, engages in lobbying efforts with governmental agencies (e.g., in the United States, the United States Department of Labor and the National Labor Relations Board) to further its priorities. The discipline may also engage in mobility management, especially pertaining to expatriates; and it is frequently involved in the merger and acquisition process. HR is generally viewed as a support function to the business, helping to minimize costs and reduce risk.

HRM IS:
Future oriented: Effective HRM helps an organization meet its goals in future by providing competent employees

Development oriented : HRM intends to develop the full potential of employees Integrating mechanism: HRM tries to build and maintain cordial relationship between peoople at different levels

29

OBJECTIVES OF HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT:

Objectives are pre-determined goals to which individual or group activity inan organization is directed. Objectives of personnel management areinfluenced by organizational objectives and individual and social goals.Organizations are not just satisfied with this goal. Further the goal of most of the organizations is growth and / or profits.Institutions procure and manage various resources including human to attainthe specified objectives. Thus, human resources are managed to divert andutilize their resources towards and for the accomplishment of organizationalobjectives. Therefore, basically the objectives of HRM are drawn from and tocontribute to the accomplishment of the organizational objectives. The other objectives of HRM are to meet the needs, aspirations, values and dignity of individual employees and having due concern for the socio-economicproblems of the community and the country.

The objectives of HRM are as follows:

To create and utilize an able and motivated workforce, to accomplish the basic organizational goals. To establish and maintain organizational structure and desirable working relationships among all the members of the organization.

To secure the integration of individual or groups within the organization by co-ordination of the individual and group goals with those of the organization. To create facilities and opportunities for individual or group developmentsoas to match it with the growth of the organization. To attain an effective utilization of human resources in the achievement of organizational goals.

HR is a product of the human relations movement of the early 20th century, when researchers began documenting ways of creating business value through the strategic management of the workforce. The function was initially dominated by transactional work such as payroll and benefits administration, but due to globalization, company consolidation, technological advancement, and further research, HR now focuses on strategic initiatives like mergers and acquisitions, talent management, succession planning, industrial and labor relations, and diversity and inclusion. HR's duties are performed by a handful of trained professionals or even by non-HR personnel. In larger companies, an entire functional group is typically dedicated to the discipline, with staff specializing in various HR tasks and functional leadership engaging in strategic decision making across the business.

32

To train practitioners for the profession, institutions of higher education, professional associations, and companies themselves have created programs of study dedicated explicitly to the duties of the function. Academic and practitioner organizations likewise seek to engage and further the field of HR, as evidenced by several field-specific publications.

POLICY DEVELOPMENT
During internship I was given work related to policy development. It is typically described as a principle or rule to guide decisions and achieve rational outcomes. The term is not normally used to denote what is actually done, this is normally referred to as either procedure or protocol. Policies are generally adopted by the Board of or senior governance body within an organization whereas procedures or protocols would be developed and adopted by senior executive officers. Policies can assist in both subjective and objective decision making. Policies to assist in subjective decision making would usually assist senior management with decisions that must consider the relative merits of a number of factors before making decisions and as a result are often hard to objectively test e.g. work-life balance policy. In contrast policies to assist in objective decision making are usually operational in nature and can be objectively tested e.g. password policy. A Policy can be considered as a "Statement of Intent" or a "Commitment". For that reason at least, the decision-makers can be held accountable for their "Policy.

POLICY CYCLE
Policy cycle is a tool to used for analyzing of the development of a policy item. It can also be referred to as a stagist approach. It includes the following stages: Agenda setting {problem identification} Policy formulation Adoption Implementation Evaluation

WHY DEVELOP A POLICY

Policies are developed to help staff and management teams run the organization. In best use situations, policies play a strategic role in an organization. They are developed in light of the mission and objectives of the company and they become the media by which managements plans, rules, intents, and business processes become documented and communicated to all staff. Carefully drafted and standardized policies and procedures save the countless hours of management time. The consistent use and interpretation of such policies, in an evenhanded and fair manner, reduces managements concern about legal issues becoming legal problems.

HOW TO START CREATING POLICY

Policies initially are derived from an understanding of core business practices. They also may emanate from a need to control operations and therefore a good understanding of how the business functions is necessary as a first step in developing good policies. Policy creation a form of research. Research is an ongoing aspect of keeping policies up to date and maintaining
34

comprehensive policies. The policies should be a living document should be dynamic that is subject to change. Existing policies need to be expanded, supplemented, and revised as business conditions change, as business process reengineering takes place , as an organization downsizes, and as quality improvement initiatives are implemented.

CHARACTERSTICS OF A GOOD POLICY DOCUMENT

1. The Administrative Policy are intended to be practical, administrative guides, with both style and content determined by user needs. The only way this can be the case is if each and every policy and procedure document is developed, written, and updated with the user in mind. Good policy and procedure documents: 2. Are reviewed regularly and updated as needed to provide appropriate direction to the campus. 3. Are written using simple, clear, concise language. 4. Avoid jargon and overly technical descriptions. 5. Are written assuming basic knowledge of the campus, but novice knowledge of the specific policy and procedure being described. 6. Clearly differentiate between "policy," "procedure," and other appropriate headings within the section. 7. Consider why the user will need the information and what the user will likely be doing when looking for information. 8. Provide accurate contact information for users who have questions or situations that fall outside of the normal situation. Remember that policy documents are not marketing documents or creative writing pieces.

PREPARATION AND RESEARCH

Before you start writing any policy, it is important to gather the information you need to develop an accurate document. To effectively focus your preparation, be sure you are clear on the point of the policy you are about to develop. Is the policy being developed in response to a problem encountered on campus, in response to a new systemwide policy issued by OP or State or Federal Regulation, or for some other reason? You need to determine what you are trying to accomplish, and make sure the point of the policy will be clear to the campus community. The first place to look for information is on the Administrative Policy Web site. Check the PPM (and other UC Davis administrative policy manuals when applicable) for related policies and information. When you are developing a new policy document, check to be sure you are not duplicating existing information. There may be a PPM section that could be expanded to include the information you are developing, or there may be related policy documents that will help inform the policy you are developing. By gathering this information in advance, you will know where you can cross35

reference rather than repeat information, and you can be sure the policy document you develop corresponds with existing policies and procedures. It may also be helpful to look at any policy document issued at the other UC campuses or other universities regarding the topic you plan to address. Other campuses may have found new or creative ways of addressing issues with which you unit has been struggling. Since we often deal with similar issues, reviewing other universities policies can sometimes help focus your policy development and give you a good starting point for your PPM section. You also need to check the Office of the President Web site to see if there is a system wide policy related to the policy you are developing. Keep in mind that all campus wide policies must be in compliance with system wide policies. The campus may implement more restrictive policies and procedures, but cannot ever be more permissive than system wide. It is important to consult with primary stakeholders in the policy to determine existing processes, problem areas, and to ensure that the policy document you develop will not impede the ability of other units to conduct business. It is not necessary for you to conduct a broad review at this point, but you should consult with those units who play a role in the policy you are developing and those whose regular business may be dramatically affected by the developing policy. Finally, consult with the Campus Policy Coordinator regularly during policy development. The Administrative Policy Office provides guidance and oversight for campus policy development and should be included early in all policy development activity.

Newspaper Questionnaire Analysis

1. Question Are you Male or Female? I handed my questionnaire out randomly to people within my classes as well as people outside of College. I asked a whole range of people, I asked young and old people as well as people from both Genders. By doing it this way you will have a much detailed and more reliable set of results. What people like to see in magazines sometimes changes due to their age or gender, so by getting round this I asked a whole range of people. I asked thirty people the questionnaire with the majority being Male with 60% and Female with 40%. Even though I have asked more Male's then Females I believe that my questionnaire will still provide me with good information because its a very reliable number of people from both sexes.

2. Question How old are you? I asked this question to the people I choose to ask so that you can see which ages like what and you might be able to see a growing trend. The majority of people which I asked the question to was the age range of between 11-20. This was due to all students studying at my College are either seventeen or eighteen years old so there ages fit into this bracket. The next highest bracket was between 41-50 as this is the general age of most parents so this was quite high. I asked a whole range of ages from people in the teens to people in there sixtys, this will give us a range of data which will help a lot when making the newspaper as we will have a whole range of opinions.

38

All the ages which I asked gave me very useful information which will be good for my newspaper because I have very useful feedback.

3. Question - What is your current occupation? Out of the thirty people asked this question the majority of the people asked classed there current occupation as being a student. This is due to the fact that they were currently studying at College/School when they were asked the questionnaire. Many classed themself as being Student but also worked part-time but they choose the Student option because this is there main occupation. There was many people in full-time work and people also in part-time work. There was no unemployed people which I asked the questionnaire to. This shows that generally in the area in which I live in is quite a wealthy area. So this could mean most people we want to know whats going on and wouldnt mind paying the small amount of money for a newspaper.

4. Question Would you say that you read newspaper regulary? Out of the thirty people asked the questionnaire the majority of people said that they would say they regularly read newspapers with 93% saying they believed they did. This is a very large amount of people because I only asked thirty people so only around two out of these people didnt read them regularly but this doesnt mean that they didnt not read them at all. This question shows us that there is a large market to target by selling a newspaper so there will be a lot of people looking to buy or read are newspaper. This will create a popularity within the area of the newspaper hopefully resulting in the increase of newspaper sales.

5. Question If so, how many times a week would you say? This question shows how many people from the question above actually read there newspaper regularly. Quite a few people only read it twice a week this could be mainly down to the fact that the weekly paper is only once a week sometimes twice. A lot of people either read the paper three times, everyday or other. This shows that these people would have read the paper more than three times a week as the other options are listed. This means that people still tend to read newspapers and that there is a big market to target.

40

6. Question - How much would you be willing to pay for the newspaper ? From looking at the chart shown above we can clearly see what price people thought was the most reasonable for the newspaper out of the ones which I had listed. Nearly all people asked the questionnaire thought that the 30p price for a magazine was the most reasonable and this is the price I am now likely to use due to many thinking it was fair. Many people thought that the 20p prices and down were to cheap and other thought that prices of 40p and more was to expensive and most thought that 30p was the most reasonable. I also thought this was the best price to sell at which could mean many people will now buy the magazine in which I am selling as I am satisfying their needs by offering at the right price. To pay 30p a week for a excellent newspaper will be very good and will work out cheap in the long run.

7. Question - Would you prefer the newspaper to be Colour-full or Plain? 80% of the people asked the questionnaire thought that newspapers were much better colour-full rather than plain and simple. Some newspapers go for the plain look such as The Guardian and others go for the colour-full vibrant look for example The Sun. All newspapers have different codes and conventions which they follow to satisfy their audience, if my audience mainly want a colour-full appearance I will follow this criteria and make a colour-full newspaper. If I follow what potential customers like to see in their newspapers it will mean that my newspaper is more likely to sell and satisfy my customers in the area which I am targeting.

41

8. Question - When you read newspapers would you read it on the Internet or buy it from the Shop? The two options which I gave the people who asked the questionnaire said similar things, some brought the newspapers from the shop and read them where as some read them on the internet because the information was free and more accessible. We will be operating are newspaper both ways, we will be selling are newspapers in local shops in the village and we will also have a website with all the local information on too. This will make are information on the local area more accessible to the people in the area because 33% said they brought from the shops and 33% said they read on the internet with 27% saying they didn't mind what method they used both. So this shows we will be satisfying most customers by offering both oprions.

9. Question - Do you like to have advertisements in the paper when you are reading them? 80% of the people who were asked the questionnaire said that they liked having advertisements in the magazines. This was mainly down to the fact that the advertisements could relate to them because some people might be looking for a local builder or another local service so they can see prices and phone numbers. Where as when you get advertisements in the national papers they don't really relate to you as much as the local advertisements will and your more likely to use their service. Only 20% said that they didn't like advertisements, this is the miniority so I will put a few advertisements in the newspaper.

42

10. Question - Would you prefer to read long or short articles when reading a paper? Generally with this question there was a mixture of feedback some people liked when reading an article. A main long article came out as the most favoured option but this was closely followed by the short article option. Also there was a choice of mixture which also had a few people favouring as they didn't mind they like reading either and have a mixture within the paper. As there was a mixture of what people favoured I will have decided to create a fairly large article and also a few small articles. I will include pictures with these articles and also have advertisements to make the pages look more interesting. By create my newspaper this way I will be able to satisfy a larger amount of people.

11. Question - What type of contents do you like to see when reading a newspaper? From this question the two favoured topics to be wrote about was "Sport" and "General news". I will try and include both a sport article as well as some articles including some general news from the area. I think that these are two very good topics and that they would be an interesting article for people to be able to read. I will write the main article of the newspaper on sport and the smaller less detailed articles on general news. 12 of the people asked the questionnaire said that they wanted a sport article and 8 out of the thirty asked wanted a general news article, so this means that twenty out the thirty asked either wanted a sport article or a general news on, this is the majority so I will include both topics.

43

12. Question - What do you think the main article in the newspaper should be about? I asked this question but I did not write any topics for them to choose from. A few people did not mind what the main article should be about but many people commented saying that I should include a sport article. As there was not much feedback regarding this question I will use the feedback I did gain and create a main sport article as the main article.
