Personal Statement Economics has been an obsession for me from the day I entered the class in grade 9 and

heard the lecturer explain scarcity. I yearned to know more about how modern economies solve the issue of scarcity, and how unlimited wants leads to opportunity cost. My curiosity got the better of me as I always stayed back after class and pushed the lecturer to answer my questions. He handed me the Cambridge text book and told me that it had the answers. From the minute I began reading that book and understanding with fascination, how economies operate, the many theories that govern consumer behaviour and the evolution in the global economy, I made my decision that this is something that I wanted to learn and develop my knowledge in; and something that would never cease to interest me. All the subjects Ive taken in the past four years are to assist me in achieving my overall ambition of obtaining a reputed degree in the UK and a career in economics. I took economics as a subject both at the Cambridge Ordinary Level and the Advanced Subsidiary Level. Thus, I have developed a strong foundation and keen insight of economic terminologies, principles and elementary economic theories. I have also learnt to employ economic skills, with reference to individuals, groups and organisations, in order to understand better the world in which they live, and participate fully in their decision making process. In addition, I have built an understanding of the relationships between developed and developing nations and to appreciate these relationships from the perspective of both. I also took subjects relating to and broadening my knowledge of economics such as principles of accounting and commerce at the O Levels and accounting and business studies at A Levels. The study of these subjects have illustrated a different perspective on how the economy operates the commercial transactions of the business world and overall taught me useful skills of evaluation, interpretation and analysis. Furthermore the subjects encouraged me on the attitudes of accuracy, orderliness, logical thought and an appreciation of professional ethics. I also took mathematics and additional mathematics at my O levels and Maths with statistics at the A Levels that taught me a great deal to help with economics which I believe requires the application of mathematical and statistical tools and quantitative skills in the analysis of economic issues. On a different take I took law at my A Levels in order to build a broader knowledge not only pertaining to economics, I learned a great deal of the English Legal System that enabled me to understand the history governing United Kingdom and build on my interpretation and analytical skills. In addition I took two languages at O Levels, French and English to improve the communication skills that will help me in my study. I have achieved several academic achievements , 4 A*s and 2 As at the O Levels together with the highest marks in the Island achieved for the Cambridge ordinary Levels on the subjects of Economics and Computer Studies. At the Cambridge Advanced Subsidiary Level I achieved 5 A grades, but what I believe sets me apart from everyone else is my passion for the work I do and responsibility I take up on such as being the Head Prefect of my School and the Interact Club President. I engage in several extracurricular activities which have been detailed on my High school transcript but I wish to elaborate on a few. Being the president of the Interact Club has taught me a great deal, constructive leadership,

personal integrity and team work above all. I have learned to accept huge work schedules and work under pressure with time limits and budgets. Every project I carried out taught me something new that will help me a better individual and in my study on economics at United Kingdom. A project on promoting national harmony and helping the internally displaced students of the North in my conflicted nation taught me the greater values of life as we taught children several useful skills. I learned how scarcity affects everyone in its own way, I saw poverty and learned about unlimited wants and limited resources, economic problems faced, such as inflation as children couldnt afford even a pencil, unemployment and unfair trading practices as there was discrimination and the economic growth in the country as small entrepreneurs were now setting up in the North. Economics helped me understand the dire situation that the people were thus I explained to my team the absolute need in helping these children and we did our best to mould them and provided them with books to help them gain the education required. Several other projects I carried out especially the green life projects creating an awareness of global warming around the city is what makes me better than the others as I possess the extra experience gained from my several Interact projects and the years of drama classes which taught me my communication skills and composure shaping me to be a better individual adding to my academic achievements. I believe that if I was admitted to study in the United Kingdom I could gain a great deal of knowledge and an extraordinary experience paving the way for an enriching and decision making career either nationally or internationally and contribute to society as well with my innovation and passion for economics. It has always been my dream to study here and every step I have taken is an aspiration to reach my goal of achieving an education at the best universities doing something I love, which is none other than economics. If I was admitted I will pursue my degree with passion, determination and responsibility.
