Filipino Physicist

1. Jose N. Rodriguez He is one of the very few pioneers in the early fight against leprosy all over the world. Dr. Rodriguez devoted most of his life to the battle against leprosy. He proposed a control program which was used all over Asia. His articles on leprosy have been published all over the world.

2. Carmen Velasquez Many young scientist wanna-bes would want to emulate her. Dr. Velasquez discovered 32 new species and one genus from Philippine food fishes, two more from birds and five from mammals. These are just a few of her discoveries which prompted the United States of America to enlist her in the American Men and Women of Science, International Scholars' Directory, International Who's Who of Intellectuals and the World Whos' Who of Women. Beat that! 3. Gregorio Zara One of the best national scientists in the Philippines, who brought you the videophone! He was born in Lipa City, Batangas and graduated from the Massachusset's Institute of Technology. The videophone, which is so widely used now, enables us to view our callers on a videoscreen. His other equally impressive inventions were an airplane engine that used alcohol as fuel and the Zara Effect or Electrical Kinetic Resistance which was named after him.

4. Vincent Ricardo M. Daria is a Filipino physicistprofessor and researcher from the UP Diliman National Institute of Physics. Daria has been recognized for his contributions in Applied Physics, particularly in the field of photonics and electro-optic instrumentation research. He has also been cited for his original contributions in laser microscopy, interferometry, optical signal processing, optical trapping, and laser manipulation of microparticles. With his studies, Daria proved that cuttingedge research in applied physics can be done in the Philippines. For his efforts, Daria has been honored as an Outstanding Filipino scientist by the National Academy of Science and Technology (Outstanding Young Scientist, 2006), the National Research Council of the Philippines (Lifetime Achievement Award for Physics, 2005) of the Department of Science and Technology. In 2005, he also received the TWAS Award for Young Scientist from the Third World Academy of Science - TWAS, which is an international organization based in Italy.

5. Christopher Y. Go, a young astronomer from Banilad, Cebu who is a Physics graduate from University of San Carlos in 1991, is now making waves in the field of astronomy. His patience and dedication to his work are now gaining him the recognition not only here in the Philippines but also in other parts of the world. His biggest discovery in February 24, 2006 was when he saw Jupiters white spot Oval Ba turn into Red. Now it is called the Red Spot Jr. Hes always with his telescope to monitor any changes in the image. Every latest images of Jupiters Red Jr is being featured at different websites in international astronomy. In January 24, 2008 he co-authored with Agustin Sanchez-Lavega in the Journal Nature on the NEB revival. In February 24, 2009, Go and Mike Wong joined the Hubble Heritage Team to image the Quad Transit in Saturn by using the Hubble Space Telescope.

He organized the University of San Carlos Astronomical Society in 1988. In 2006 he became a member of the American Astronomical Society and its Division for Planetary Science (DPS). Then he joined the team headed by Dr. Imke de Pater and Dr. Phil Macus to image Red Jr by using the Hubble Space Telescope in March, April and May 2006.

6. Reinabelle Reyes is a Filipino astrophysicist who is best known for receiving the Chambliss Astronomy Achievement Student Award for her major role in the discovery of the largest number of obscured quasars, which are super massive black holes in the centers of galaxies cloaked in gas and dust. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Astrophysics at Princeton University in New Jersey, USA. 7. Casimiro del Rosario- Dr. del Rosario is known for his researches on ultraviolet light of different wavelengths, effect of radioactive radiation on Euglena, high voltage electrical discharges in a vacuum, and many others. His works have been published in international journals such as the American Physics Review and the Journal of Franklin Institute. He is the co-founder of the Bartol Research Foundation in Philadelphia, an institution which did pioneering researches in physics.Dr. del Rosario was the recipient of a Presidential Award in 1965 for his contributions to physics. He was made Director of the Philippine Weather Bureau for 11 years, and the first vice-chairman of theNational Science Development Board in 1958. He was conferred as a National Scientist in 1984.

8. Dr. Josefino C. Comiso is a prominent Filipino physicist noted worldwide for his studies about global warming. Comiso, who obtained his doctorate degree in physics from the University of California at Los Angeles, is a physical scientist at the Earth Sciences Directorate of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration/Goddard Space Flight Center for more than two decades. Most of his studies dealt with the polar processes and the detection of climate change in the polar regions.Comiso has developed techniques for using satellite data to obtain trends in the parameters of studying sea ice. These data collected from his research have been useful in the analysis and evaluation of changes in the ice cover in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions, and provided scientists valuable information about the extent and scope of global warming during the last two decades.Comiso's research has been cited in one episode of National Broadcasting Corporation's Nightly News. Host Brian Williams have mentioned his study associating the accelerated shrinkage of Arctic ice being reflective of global warming. 9. Alcaraz, Arturo: w a s a l e a d i n g member of a team that used steamp p r o d u c e d f r o m t h e h e a t o f a volcano to produce electric powerin 1967

Marie Curie- Pioneering the study of radioactivity and discovering theradioactive elements radium andpoloniumWinning the 1903 Nobel Prize inphysics with her husband, Pierre Curie, and Antoine Henri BecquerelWinning the 1911 Nobel Prize inchemistry, and becoming the firstscientist to receive the award in twodifferent scientific categories

3. Thomas Edison -Inventing numeroususeful devices, including a practicalelectric light bulb and the phonograph-Discovered that incandescentmaterials emit electrons. Thisphenomenon is known as the Edisoneffect or thermionic emission

4. Alexander Graham Bell-Contributing to the invention andspread of the telephone-Founding the Bell Telephone Company 5. Johannes Diderik Van der Waals-Van der Waals was interested primarilyin thermodynamics; he developed atheory of corresponding states on thecontinuity of the liquid and gaseousstates of matter expressed in the vander Waals equation. For thesediscoveries he was awarded the 1910Nobel Prize in physics. He also studiedthe attractive forces holding the atomsof molecules together. These arecalled van der Waals forces, in hishonor.
