Course : PH31006/PH41008: Mathematical Methods II : 20112012(II) Assignment 2 1 (a).

Find the second order PDE for u(x, y) if (i) u = f (x vt + iy) + g(x vt iy), where v and are constants. (ii) u = f (x2 y) + g(x2 + y). 2. Consider a rectangular plate of sides a and b. The edges of the plate are always maintained at a temperature T0 . At t = 0 the temperature prole across the plate is given by an arbitrary function f (x, y). Find the temperature at any time t. 3. (a) Consider a drum-head in the shape of a sector of a circle of radius R and angle . Take a mode with a node along an arc of radius r < R. Which mode is this for = , = , = 2

(b) Find the rst three modes of a rectangular drum-head with sides a and b. Draw these modes and show the nodal lines. 4. Two conducting planes intersect at an angle . The planes are assumed to be held at a potential V . Remote from the origin, are other conductors and charges which specify the potential problem uniquely. Find the solution (use circular coordinates , ) for the potential, electric eld components and the surface charge densities on the planes, near = 0. Note: This is, eectively, a two dimensional problem. You can take the conducting planes as intersecting along the z axis and solve the 2D problem by working in the xy plane. 5. Consider the telegraph equation: 2w w 2w +a + bw = c2 2 t2 t x Show that this equation can be converted to the form: 2u + ku = 0 (2) (1)

by suitable transformations of the independent {w(x, t) u(, )} and dependent {(x, t) (, )} variables. What is k in terms of a,b and c? 6. The PDE given below describes the variation of neutron density n(r, t) in a ssionable material (say U235 ) n = a2 2 n + bn t 1 (3)

Given the sample in the form of a sphere of radius R with n(r, 0) = f (r) and n(R, 0) = 0 nd n(r, t) for t > 0 and r R.

Further, deduce that if 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 are arbitrary solutions of 2 = 0, then = x1 + y2 + 3 + 4 is a solution of 4 = 0. 8. Consider the Helmholtz equation in elliptic cylindrical coordinates (u,v w) as dened in the class. Find the Stackel determinant and check separability using the Eisenhart conditions. Show that after separation, the equations for the coordinates u and v reduce to the modied Mathieu and Mathieu equations, respectively.
