Letter from the Director

In July, we met our match! The new hospitalito was constructed thanks largely to a match campaign, the Kendeda Challenge Grant. The deadline was July 15th, and we not only matched, but surpassed our goal of raising $750,000. Just five months later, in December, construction finally came to an end, and our education room, and medical library, along with our laboratory, moved into their new home on the second floor. 2011 was a year of growth and change at Hospitalito Atitln.

2011 fue un ao de crecimiento y cambio en el Hospitalito Atitln. En julio, hemos alcanzado nuestra meta! El hospitalito nuevo fue construido en gran parte gracias a un match campaign, el Kendeda Challenge Grant. Pero mientras que en 2011 hemos marcado el final de la construccin, tambin hemos visto la iniciacin de nuevos proyectos.

Muchos de ellos nacieron con la ayuda de nuestro nuevo obsttrico-gineclogo guatemalteco, el Dr. Recinos. Mientras tanto, hemos firmado un convenio con la Universidad Landivar que nos va a permitir recibir una pediatra.

But while 2011 marked the end of construction, it also saw many new beginnings.

We received a generous donation from the Fundacin Reina Sofia (Spain). The donation was valued at $81,150 US , and included antibiotics, antiinflamatory, anti-hypertensive and anti-ulcer medication.

Many of them were helped into the world thanks to our new Guatemalan OB/Gyn, Dr. Recinos. Meanwhile, we signed a partnership with Landivar University that will provide us with a pediatrician.

Throughout 2011, we treated over 10,000 patients at the hospital, and welcomed 172 new babies.

This year, we also received an $80,000 grant from the World Diabetes Foundation to launch WDFs first diabetes initiative in Guatemala.

Meantime, Hospitalito welcomed 81 medical and nonmedical volunteers from around the world. We look forward to an even better year in 2012!

Construction Completed Hospitalito Atitln Construccin terminado

On December 11th, the second floor of Hospitalito Atitln was officially opened, and construction of the hospital was successfully completed. Its the accomplishment of a dream, thanks to the tremendous efforts of hundreds of workers, donors and volunteers from Santiago Atitln, Guatemala and around the world. While our first floor has been fully operational since November, 2010, completion of the second floor means that our administration and development offices, laboratory, storage area, education room, medical library, kitchen, and laundry are now enjoying their spacious new home. The second floor also includes a medical library and training facilities.

We couldnt have done it without you. Hospitalito Atitln would particularly like to thank the Kendeda Challenge Fund for their tremendous generosity. Under this initiative, Hospitalito Atitln had until July 15th to raise $750,000, in order for this amount to be matched by the Kendeda Fund. We are proud to say that we not only matched, but surpassed this amount. Five months later, the construction of Hospitalito Atitln was complete. The end of construction was initially forecast for January, 2012, but was completed one month ahead of schedule. Hospitalito Atitln was reconstructed following the destruction of the original hospital in a massive 2005 mudslide that killed hundreds and left thousands homeless.

Our Achievements:

Midwife Training Program: Hospitalito Atitln participates in a midwife training program that provides training in pre and perinatal care, delivered according to Guatemala Ministry of Health requisites.

This year, we signed a three-year agreement with the foundation for Managing Diabetes in Santiago Atitln, a project that includes training 200 local healthcare workers and the launch of five diabetes clinics in 2012.

Smile Network International: The lives of 23 children were changed forever, by a week-long visit of Smile Network International, an NGO that performed cleft palate surgeries.

Capacitacin de comadronas: Hospitalito Atitln participa en la coordinacin del programa de capacitacin de comadronas, bajo cual reciben formacin en el cuidado pre y postnatal conforme a los requisitos del Ministerio de Salud de Guatemala. Apoyo al Centro de Ancianos: Este ao seguimos colaborando con el Centro de Ancianos, proviendo servicios mdicos a las personas de tercera edad.

Actualmente, seguimos con otros proyectos: Programa Materno Infantil: Gracias a esta iniciativa, 18 mujeres y nios vulnerables recibieron atencin pre y post-natal. Para apadrinar a una madre, por favor consulta www.hospitalitoatitlan.org.

Hospitalito Atitln is a non-profit hospital located in Santiago Atitln, Guatemala. We are the only 24hour emergency services facility within a two-hour radius, in cooperation with the local Centro de Salud. Where We Work

Our Major Challenges: Santiago Atitln and Guatemala as a whole are increasingly facing a double-edge sword, in terms of healthcare. While we continue to fight the effects of extreme poverty, we are increasingly confronting the challenges of chronic disease.

Many people in this area live in extremely difficult conditions. Poverty means many children dont study beyond the equivalent of sixth grade. There is a high rate of illiteracy. Many families with six or eight children are subsisting off the equivalent of $5 per day.

Our Target Population: The vast majority of our patients are Tzutujil Maya. We are focused on providing healthcare to the most vulnerable members of the community and, as such, most of our patients are mothers with young children.

Estamos enfocados en brindar atencin mdica a los miembros ms vulnerables de la comunidad y como tal, la mayora de nuestros pacientes son madres y nios. Mucha gente aqu vive en condiciones extremadamente difciles. La pobreza significa que muchos nios no estudian ms que el equivalente al sexto primaria. Hay una alta tasa de analfabetismo. Muchas familias con seis u ocho nios subsisten del equivalente de $5 por da.

Nuestros desafios principales: Santiago Atitln y Guatemala en su conjunto se enfrentan cada vez ms a un arma de doble filo luchando contra los efectos de la pobreza extrema, pero encontrandose cada vez ms frente a las enfermedades crnicas. Water and poverty - Potable water is extremely scarce in Guatemala, so that we are continually fighting against parasites, Hepatitis A, diarrhea and malnutrition. Indoor cooking fires lead to respiratory problems. Chronic Diseases - Dramatic changes in the local lifestyle have lead to a steep increase in diabetes and cardiovascular disease. There is a lack of knowledge about what causes these diseases, while poverty often means that people simply cant afford treatment.

Fundraising revenues were divided between major gifts of over $5,000 ($30,000) and minor gifts of under $5,000 ($57,173). Our total operating revenues were $248,923 (excluding value of in-kind donations).

Our operating expenses for 2011 included wages and benefits ($174,271), facilities and equipment ($21,004) and medicine and supplies ($25,011), while other expenses totalled $40,230. Total operating costs were $260,518.

In 2011, Hospitalito Atitln treated 12,331 patients. Patient visits included 175 childbirths 646 ultrasounds and 2,068 ERvisits.

In 2011, Hospitalito Atitln offered discounted or free care to 1264 patients, for a total of $55,706. We offer high-quality care, all of which is highly subsidised, and no one is ever turned away. We work particularly closely with the most vulnerable and marginalized, people who otherwise wouldnt receive care. We place special emphasis on mothers and children and maternal infant health. Domingo Reanda Ajtzip was born on May 24th, 2011 to Juana Reanda Ajtzip, a single mother whos part of HospitalitoAtitlns maternal infant program. Juana says:For me, its a great help to have a sponsor, especially during my pregnancy, because the doctors told me it was a high-rish pregnancy, and I might need a cesarean. With what I earn, there was no way I could cover the costs.

Juana dice:Para m es una gran ayuda estar apadrinada, especialmente durante mi embarazo, por que los mdicos me dijeron que era un embarazo de alto riesgo y posiblemente necesitara una cesarea. Magdalenas youngest son spent three days in Hospitalito Atitln with pneumonia. The family would like to thank the donors who made their babys recovery possible. This isnt Mikes first trip to Guatemala - or his first work with Hospitalito Atitln. Mike first came to Guatemala as a University of Pennsylvania student, with the schools Guatemala Health Initiative. We look forward to continuing to work with this wonderful couple in the future.

Isobel is a registered nurse whose focus is on sharing her knowledge and skills with our auxiliary nurses. She is working extensively with our team and has become an integral part of the nursing staff. Meanwhile, Mike has a masters in public health and is working hard in our development office.

Hospitalito Atitln is thrilled to be working with Mike and Isobel Harvey, a husband and wife team who are volunteering with us for one year. They arrived in March,2011.

Isobel es una enfermera quien esta enfocada en compartir sus conocimientos y capacidades con nuestros enfermeros auxiliares.
