PREFACE
This handbook was prepared by Standards Australia in consultation with the Nation Office for the Information Economy (NOIE) (now the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts), project subcontractors Red Wahoo, and an industry based advisory panel. It is an historical record of the outputs of two projects conducted by the project team which developed a national e-business framework, registry and toolkit concepts, collectively known as BizDex. A working group managed by Standards Australia, consisting of representatives from the vendor, service provider, government agencies, standards and end-user communities provided strategic direction and oversight for the projects. These concepts were further demonstrated in a further project in which a large buyer in the wheat industry automated the grain ticket business process between its enterprise management software application (SAP) and an office management software application (Quicken) used by many of the 40,000 small businesses it trades with. It successfully demonstrated how the BizDex infrastructure could be used to connect a trading community. This document forms part of a series consisting of: HB 310BizDexA framework for registry operations (this handbook). HB311B2B registry service Detailed specification. FOREWORD
The objective of the BizDex Framework is to enable enterprises, regardless of their business specialization and size, to readily engage with trading partners through a B2B framework, which supports low cost and scaleable interoperability. This vision is underpinned by a three-axis strategy as follows:

1.1 GOALS The goal of this document is to define the technical operations model for the BizDex registry. 1.2 SCOPE The BizDex service will be deployed in phases with new features added in each phase. The scope of this document is to define the features and operations of the first (phase 1) production release of BizDex. The key features for this first release are: Data Qualitythat registry content accurately describes the e-business services offered by registered businesses. Trustusers can trust that the registered data is published by the owning business. Partner Discovery and BindingA framework for partner discovery, negotiation and integration. These operational requirements are met through extensions to the standard UDDI registry service. 1.3 AUDIENCE The target audience includes both business and technical staff from the stakeholder community: Government. Standards bodies. Industry associations. Application vendors.

This document is not intended for the end user community. Rather it is expected that the registry operator will use this document as source material for user guides and other enduser documentation. 1.4 REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE The reader should be familiar with e-business standards such as ebXML and Web Services. The reader should also be familiar with the BizDex project (www.bizdex.com.au). Finally the reader should have read and understood the registry specification document HB 311 1.5 DOCUMENT CONTEXT This document is one of a group of documents that comprise the toolkit and registry project scope. This document is the third of three documents in the registry stream (HB 310, HB 314 and HB 315).

2.1 QUALITY, USABILITY AND TRUST 2.1.1 General The success of the BizDex service is very dependant on the quality of data in the registry. If entries are incomplete, incorrectly classified, mis-named, or just plain wrong then partner discovery and automatic integration will fail. In parallel with the requirement for accurate data is the requirement that BizDex be very easy to use for non-technical users. However UDDI is a complex specification and current commercial implementations are targeted at the technical specialist.

Finally, BizDex data must be trustworthy if the service is to succeed. For example, users must be assured that they are not sending orders, invoices and payments to someone masquerading as the partner they know and trust. The quality and usability requirements are met through an additional layer built above the core UDDI product that automates the profile publishing step. The trust requirement is met through use of ABN-DSC certificates to control the authority to publish. The approach is to request as little information as possible from the user and instead automatically generate as much data as possible from reference schema or other sources. This approach is shown in Figure 1.
