Installation Guide

3.5. Cygwin for AVL Workspace

The AVL Workspace scripting environment is based on Cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com), a Linux-like environment for Windows. The AVL Workspace installer will create a Cygwin installation directory in <installDir>\common\cygwin, and set up this Cygwin or any existing Cygwin installation for AVL Workspace automatically, depending on whether a Cygwin installation exists before installing AVL Workspace or not. The Cygwin version installed by the AVL Workspace installer is a snapshot from Sep 26 2007, only the minimal base packages from the Cygwin distribution are contained. To install additional packages, or to update to a more recent version, you may run <installDir>\common\cygwin\Installation\setup.exe. Updates will not be overwritten by the AVL Workspace installer. Background information The mapping of Win32 drives into Cygwin's internal POSIX directory tree is stored in the current user's Cygwin mount table in the Windows registry. The current user's table is located under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Cygnus Solutions/Cygwin/mounts. The system-wide table is located under the same subkeys under HKEY_MACHINE. The AVL Workspace installer identifies existing Cygwin installation by the existence of a mount point for "/bin" from the current user's mount table or from the system-wide table. If the AVL Workspace installer detects an existing Cygwin installation, AVL Workspace will not modify any mount point. AVL Workspace will be set up to use the existing Cygwin installation in this case. All AVL Workspace v5.0.3 settings for interfacing to the Cygwin installation can be found in <installDir>\bin\avlast_sh_cfg.bat. If AVL Workspace v5.0.2 or older exists, the AVL Workspace installer will update <installDir>\bin\bash.bat as required. To recover from a damaged Cygwin installation, we recommend to delete the registry keys HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Cygnus Solutions and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Cygnus Solutions before reinstalling Cygwin. After that, edit <installDir>\bin\avlast_sh_cfg.bat.

4. INSTALLATION FOR UNIX

This guide describes how to install the AVL Workspace software from a DVD drive on Unix platforms and how to setup the software. The DVD contains the software for the most commonly used platforms. For other platforms, please contact your local representative or the AVL support team.

4.1. Overview
The following steps are necessary to perform the installation: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Insert the appropriate DVD. Mount the DVD. Run the installation GUI. Setup new path. Setup the license.

4.2. Mounting the DVD

AVL DVD's contain data stored in ISO 9660 format. If the DVD has not been mounted as a file system, login as root and use the appropriate command for the system. On some systems DVDs are mounted automatically when attempting to access setup.exe as follows: Type ls -l /DVD/setup.exe or ls -l /dvd/setup.exe or ls -l /dvd/dvd0/setup.exe. A line similar to the following should appear:
-rwxrwxr-x 1 jrp ts 1024 Apr 16 11:36 /DVD/setup.exe

or
-rwxrwxr-x 1 jrp ts 1024 Apr 16 11:36 /dvd/setup.exe

If the following line appears then the DVD drive must be mounted manually: /DVD/setup.exe: No such file or directory or /dvd/setup.exe: No such file or directory

4.6. How to proceed if disk space is low

As mentioned before: if a previous product version has been installed, it is strongly recommended to install this software into the existing installation directory (i.e. $AVLAST_HOME). Otherwise job submission problems may occur when submitting jobs to remote hosts, or when using the Workspaces optimization interface. Installing the software to a new location after a previous product version has been installed is valid only if symbolic links are created as outlined in the table below:

Case 1 AVL Workspace is to be installed the first time; a different AST product (e.g. FIRE) exists.

What to do <installpath> ... Installation location of AST software products, i.e. $AVLAST_HOME <installpath2> ... 6. LICENSING
The installation and setup process is described in the AST Licensing Users Guide.

6.1. Requesting a license

If you have not received a license key, request one from your local representative or from AVL Graz (ast_license@avl.com). Include the following information: Software Product Name Telephone, Fax, E-Mail address Company System ID Local installation: Network installation: on every computer where the AVL Workspace software should be used on the license server computer

Installation Type (Node locked, Network)

For Windows this information can be extracted by using a utility under Start | Programs | AVL | License | License Request.

6.2. Expected FLEXnet Hostids

The program lmhostid (or lmcomposite on Windows and Linux) will print the exact hostid that FLEXnet expects to use on any given machine. The following table lists alternate methods to obtain the required hostid for each machine architecture. FLEXnet also supports a group of special hostids and vendor-defined hostids.

7. ANSYS INTERFACE INSTALLATION

The ANSYS to AVL EXCITE Interface can be installed on each platform and operating system that is supported by ANSYS. Administration privileges are required for editing ANSYS installation files. The installation process involves copying the interface files, which can be found in AWS Installation DVD ( folder: <AWS_installation_folder>\EXCITE\version\fem\ansys\ ) or downloaded from the AVL Service World. The installation procedure requires the following steps: Case 1: Downloading from the AVL Service World 1. Uncompress the file Ansys2Excite.zip or Ansys2Excite.tar.gz to your <folder>/<directory> 2. Define ANSYS environment variable ANSYS_MACROLIB to point to the <folder>/<directory> where the interface files are located (to define environment variable refer to the ANSYS Installation and Configuration Manual or ask your system administrator) 3. Update the file: <ANSYS_installation_ folder>\vXX\ANSYS\gui\en-us\UIDL\ menulistXX.ans (where XX is the ANSYS version) by adding the name of the granula file (excite.grn with full path name) at the end of this file (administration privileges are required for this and next step) 4. Update the file <ANSYS_installation_ folder>\vXX\ANSYS\gui\en-us\toolbars\tlbrlistXX.ans (where XX is the ANSYS version) by adding the name of the menu file (AVL.TLB with full path name) at the end of this file The ANSYS to AVL EXCITE Interface is now ready for use. Start the ANSYS.

Case 2: Interface Files are in folder <AWS_installation_folder>\EXCITE\version\fem\ansys\ 1. Define ANSYS environment variable ANSYS_MACROLIB to point to the <AWS_installation_folder>\EXCITE\version\fem\ansys\, where the interface files are located (to define the environment variable refer to the ANSYS Installation and Configuration Manual or ask your system administrator) 2. Update the file: <ANSYS_installation_ folder>\vXX\ANSYS\gui\en-us\UIDL\ menulistXX.ans (where XX is the ANSYS version) by adding the name of the granula file (excite.grn with full path name) at the end of this file (administration privileges are required for this and next step)
