Chapter 2 Review of Related Literature and Studies The study aims to find out the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations of the second year students that affects their academic performance. Through this, the researchers would know the factors that would motivate the students to study. The researchers would want to discuss what can motivate the students intrinsically and extrinsically, the teachers approach to the students, and the interest of a student in a certain subject.

Challenge to Motivate The constant challenge teachers and educators face is to make their students learn something from them; to rely and share information and knowledge. It is not only a requirement of their job; to teach, but to also feel the satisfaction of knowing that the youth had learned something vital and essential to life. Motivating the students to learn can be tiresome, daunting, and just plain difficult. According to Kirk (2011), educational psychology has classified two basic types of motivation- intrinsic and extrinsic. Extrinsic motivation pertains to the motivation off succeeding in necessity of gaining a goal. While intrinsic motivation is achieved through the students genuine interest and particular liking of the subject. The challenge for teachers now is to intrinsically motivate the students to inspire them genuinely and not emphasize the marks they will receive foe their accomplishments.

The Inside Scoop The hardest motivation for a lot of people is the ones coming from within them. Nowadays, you seldom hear students take actual preference in learning a subject or even a hint of interest in their studies. To engage the student into learning it is needed that the new knowledge they are to receive should connect with the prior information they are provided with. For example, in a conversation if a person can relate to the topic, she can participate and share her knowledge just like how in class if the topic is relevant to the student they can take in what the teacher is feeding to them.

Reflection The factors playing the outside are most likely the environment and the people surrounding you. A student is affected by the company she keeps. Another factor is on how she receives the knowledge the teacher imparts to them and how she approaches the students through their teaching strategies. But regarding this, the students must not only depend on their teachers concerning knowledge gain but on how they absorb the variety of information given. Tactics Behind every good teacher, is their great teaching strategy. A motto every teacher should incorporate with their job. Often the teacher forgets the teaching style they provide for the students has become generic that tends to unfocus the students. As

a result, unless the students are very motivated, they learn only as much as their teachers cover in class or assign for reading said Tenedoro (2003, p.E-2) Educators assume that the students capture all the lessons they throw at students each time. Tenedoro added that few teachers know how to teach students to study through their learning- style strengths which causes their lack of knowledge on how students respond to them. When the teachers are not able to reach out to their students, the students feel they are incapable of learning resulting to their loss of interest. The brain of a teen would have an average of an attention span of only 20-25 minutes regardless of their learning-style. To avoid leaving preoccupied minds of the children by monotonic discussions teachers can spice the lesson with ice breakers, an outdoor activity or just a simple joke to lighten up the subject so that it wouldnt make the students feel too uptight.

Through the different sources that are in line and tackle the proposed topic of the researchers, there are two very vital factors on how to relay knowledge and information. One is through the traditional teacher-to-student style. Based on the researchers findings the national attention span of humans last for approximately 20-25 minutes only. Thus in turn may be a major factor affecting the students learning and motivation. Almost all the articles had discussed how many teaching styles there are available to cater for each students unique needs and learning styles. These teaching styles significantly affect how pupils may learn and gain knowledge or information. The researchers may suggest that these are one of the many extrinsic motivations to which

students are exposed onto a daily basis. It was emphasized that educators should stimulate their pupils to relate to them new information because they learn from comparing and relating stored and prior knowledge to something new since the former is something they already understand. Given this, the extrinsic motivations and factors are much easily measurable compared to intrinsic motivations because these are much easily measurable compared to intrinsic motivations because these are more on subjective thinking rather than an objective measure.
