Manual Calculation From the problem given, net work output required is 125 MW, and 15% from

the gross power generated are consumed by all the pumps and other auxiliary equipment. Calculation of Gross Work Gross Work = Work produced by Turbine = WT Net Work = WT + ( Wp + WH + WC ) , where, Wp = Power produced by the pump for the Rankine Cycle WH = Power produced for the pumping sea water at the surface WC = Power produced for the pumping deep sea water All these pump require 15% from the power generated by the turbine, hence, Let x be the power produced by the turbine,
125MW x 0.15( x)

x 147MW
Thus, the turbine is producing 147 MW of power.

Evaporator The ammonia phase entering the evaporator is in sub cooled or compressed liquid. In order to have a compressed liquid phase, the temperature of the working fluid must be below than the saturation temperature at a given pressure.

P 889kPa 1 T1 283.3K
Condition at outlet of the evaporator,

P2 889kPa T2 300.15K
Since evaporator heating the working fluid at a constant temperature, and this is a closed system, thus,
Q H Q H 2 H1

Thus,

H 1478kJ / kg 229.7kJ / kg H 1248.3kJ / kg Q H Q 1248.3kJ / kg

Turbine Work as an isentropic process and adiabatic. Pressure and temperature outlet,

P3 600kPa T3 282.43K
Since it is isentropic process,

S 0 S 2 S3 S3 5.13kJ / kg.K
From the saturated pressure data for Ammonia at 600kPa, value of entropy at saturated vapour is 5.21 kJ/kg.K. Since it is between the sat vap and sat liq, thus the working fluid is in mixture condition, where the quality of the steam need to be determine.
S (1 x ) Sliq ( x ) Svap x 0.9812 x 98 %

Thus, by having the quality, the enthalpy at the outlet of the turbine calculated,

H 3 (1 x ) Hliq ( x ) Hvap H 3 0.02(233.6kJ / kg) 0.98(1451kJ / kg) H 3 1426.5kJ / kg

Thus,
WTurbine H WT H 3 H 2 WT 1426.5kJ / kg 1478kJ / kg WT 51.5kJ / kg

The negative sign indicates that the system is producing a work. Therefore, by having the work produced by the turbine, the mass flowrate for the OTEC Closed System can be calculate.

W m H W m H kJ s m kJ 51.5 kg

147000

m 2854.4kg / s
Since, this is a closed system the mass flowrate through the cycle is constant.

W 51 .5kJ / kg m 2854 .4kg / s Power 147 MW

Condenser At the condenser, the ammonia releasing heat and convert into a saturated liquid. The condition at the outlet of the condenser is,

P4 600kPa T4 282.41K H 4 223.6kJ / kg

Thus,

Q H Q H4 H3 Q 223.6kJ / kg 1428kJ / kg Q 1204.4kJ / kg

The negative sign indicate that heat being release from the system.

Pump A pump in the system is use to pumping the saturated liquid to the pressure of the evaporator, which is 889 kPa. This process required a work. The condition outlet of the condenser,

P1 889kPa T1 283.3K H 1 229.7kJ / kg

Thus, as the pump operates adiabatically,

W H W H1 H 4 W 229.7kJ / kg 223.6kJ / kg W 6.1kJ / kg

Heat Exchanger The evaporator and condenser in this closed OTEC system is a heat exchanger which the heating and cooling medium are from different depth of sea water level. The heating process is done by pumping sea water from the surface which is at 301.15K (28C) into the heat exchanger (evaporator). In the other hand, the cooling process is accomplish by pumping the cold sea water from 600m below sea level into the condenser. Thus, by having the heat absorbed by the system, (Qevaporator) and the heat released to the sea water (Qcondenser), the mass flow rate for both heat exchanger could be determined. Heat Exchanger (Evaporator) Using the equation of,

Q m CpT Qc QH (m Cp) c T (m Cp) H T

Thus, as the heat absorbed calculated, 1248.3kJ/kg, the mass flowrate for the warm sea water entering the heat exchanger is then,

T4 T1 300.15K 283.3K T 16.85K Tin 301.15K Tout 284.65K Q m CpT Q m CpT (1248.3kJ / kg) * ( 2854.4kg / s ) m ( 4.2kJ / kg.K ) * (16.85K ) m 50348.3kg / s
From the calculation, the mass flowrate of the warm sea water entering the evaporator, is
m w 50348 .3kg / s

Heat exchanger (Condenser) Using the same formula,

Q m CpT Qc QH (m Cp) c T (m Cp) H T

The heat remove from the system calculated is the same with the heat absorbed by the cool sea water entering the condenser.

Tin 278.15K Tout 284.15K T 11K Q m CpT Q m CpT ( 1205kJ / kg) * ( 2854.4kg / s ) m ( 4.2kJ / kg.K ) * ( 11K ) m 74438.7kg / s
