Joint Commission International Accreditation & Certification

Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation and certification is the proven process your organization needs to help ensure a safe environment for your patients, staff and visitors. This voluntary process shows your organizations commitment to continuously improving patient safety.

We are dedicated to helping international health care organizations, public health agencies, and ministries of health evaluate, improve and demonstrate the quality of patient care while accommodating any specific legal, religious and cultural factors within a country.

Benefits of JCI accreditation and certification:

Improve public trust as an organization that values quality and patient safety Involve patients and their families as partners in the care process Build a culture open to learning from adverse events and safety concerns Ensure a safe and efficient work environment that contributes to staff satisfaction Establish collaborative leadership that strives for excellence in quality and patient safety Understand how to continuously improve clinical care processes and outcomes

Programs:
Accreditation for Ambulatory Care
The JCI Accreditation Standards for Ambulatory Care are designed to evaluate the quality and safety of all clinical and managerial functions for the ambulatory care setting.

The standards are applicable to a variety of ambulatory organizations, including:

Free-standing medical, dental and surgical facilities Dialysis facilities Diagnostic radiology centers Outpatient chronic care management facilities Acute care centers

The ambulatory care standards also address the International Patient Safety Goals, new accreditation decision rules, and revised policies.

Accreditation for Clinical Laboratories

The JCI Accreditation Standards for Clinical Laboratories support a complete, accurate and objective assessment of laboratory processes and management practices that provide essential services for patients. These standards help laboratories demonstrate their efficiency, accuracy and cost-effectiveness to all stakeholders while keeping their main focus on quality and patient safety.

Accreditation for Hospitals

The JCI Accreditation Standards for Hospitals are designed to evaluate quality and patient safety in all clinical and managerial functions of acute care hospitals. The standards are applicable for:
Public and private hospitals Medical and psychiatric hospitals Related outpatient clinics

JCI Accreditation continues to be recognized as the premier international accreditor for hospitals.

Accreditation for Long Term Care

Home Care and Long Term Care are the newest JCI accreditation programs, but their standards were derived from what were JCIs care continuum accreditation program standards, which were first published in 2003. Those standards were designed to address the care of individuals with chronic diseases, those undergoing rehabilitation needs, and those at the end of life. The Care Continuum standards were organized around providing care in a wide range of settings, from the individuals home to long term care facilities, to assisted living settings. Although the processes used in each setting may be somewhat similar, the missions and services provided in each of those settings are different. Therefore, the decision was made to develop individual standards for each setting, beginning with Long Term Care and Home Care.

Accreditation for Medical Transport Organizations

The JCI Standards for Medical Transport address all aspects of emergency and non-emergency transport of patients. The standards are applicable to public and community-based medical transport organizations associated with hospitals.

The standards effectively evaluate:

dispatch services medical services provided during transport

infection control vehicle management and safety

Accreditation for Primary Care Centers

The JCI Accreditation Standards for Primary Care Centers are a valuable guide to individual primary care organizations and to public health agencies located in rural or urban settings. The standards focus on:
community integration health promotion and disease prevention

Certification for Clinical Care Programs (CCPC)

Differing from accreditation, Clinical Care Program Certification demonstrates excellence in the integration and coordination of care for treatment of a specific disease. The CCPC standards apply to disease programs for the following: Heart Failure Acute Myocardial Infarction Primary Stroke Diabetes Mellitus (Type 1) and/or Diabetes Mellitus (Type 2) Chronic Kidney Disease (Stage I to IV) End-Stage Renal Disease Palliative Care (all types) Traumatic Brain Injury HIV/AIDS Management Cancer (all types) Pain Management Asthma Joint Replacement (all types) Transplantation (all types) Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

About Joint Commission International

As the international arm of The Joint Commission, Joint Commission International (JCI) has been working with health care organizations, ministries of health, and global organizations in over 80 countries since 1994. Our focus is on improving the safety of patient care through the provision of accreditation and certification services as well as through advisory and educational services aimed at helping organizations implement practical and sustainable solutions. In June 2011, JCI received four-year accreditation by the International Society for Quality in Health Care (ISQua). Accreditation by ISQua provides assurance that the standards, training and processes used by JCI to survey the performance of health care organizations meet the highest international benchmarks for accreditation entities. All components of JCI have been accredited; the overall accreditation program, the standards used to accredit hospitals, primary care organizations, ambulatory care organizations, care continuum (home care and long term care), clinical laboratories, and clinical care program certification standards. In addition, ISQua has also accredited the JCI training program for on-site surveyors located around the world. The world's first World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre dedicated exclusively to patient safety solutions is a joint partnership between the WHO, The Joint Commission (JCI's United States-based parent), and JCI.

International Accreditation and Certification

JCI has been accrediting health care organizations since 1999--2009 marked the tenth anniversary of the first hospital accredited by JCI, Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, a private, non-profit, nongovernmental facility in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Since then, approximately 450 public and private health care organizations in 50 countries have been accredited or certified by JCI. JCI provides accreditation for hospitals, ambulatory care facilities, clinical laboratories, care continuum services, home care and long term care organizations, medical transport organizations, and primary care services, as well as certification for 15 types of clinical care programs. JCI standards were developed by international health care experts and set uniform, achievable expectations. Through JCI accreditation and certification, health care organizations have access to a variety of resources and services that connect them with the international community: an international quality measurement system for benchmarking; risk reduction strategies and best practices; tactics to reduce adverse events, and the annual Executive Briefing Programs.

Costs of Accreditation
Since there can be misconceptions of the actual costs of accreditation, we have developed a list of frequently asked questions to help in your decision to apply for accreditation.

Approximately what is the cost of a JCI accreditation survey for a hospital?

The average fee for a hospital full survey in 2010 was $46,000.00 USD.

How is the cost determined?

The cost is determined by the size and complexity of the hospital. This determines the number of surveyors and the number of days needed to survey the standards. This can vary from 2 surveyors for 2 days in a very small specialty hospital to 5 surveyors for 6 days in a large multispecialty university hospital. The details found in an organizations application for accreditation drive the formula to determine survey team size and survey length and this determines the cost.

Are there other costs related to a survey?

Yes the cost for transportation of the team and hotel, food and local transportation costs on-site are not included. These are not included in the survey cost as they are extremely variable and subject to currency fluctuations. The JCI travel policy places caps and limits on such costs. In addition, hospitals often recommend reasonably priced hotels, and provide ground transportation for the survey team.

Does the cost of an accreditation survey include any education and consultation as the hospital prepares?
No while JCI does offer accreditation preparation services through a separate division, many organizations choose to prepare on their own or with assistance from other sources. Also, JCI keeps consultation and accreditation services totally separate to ensure the integrity of the evaluation process. Many organizations, for their own costing purposes, will however group together consultation costs with any capital expenditures they may wish to make into the cost for accreditation. Thus, it is important to separate out the fixed cost of the actual accreditation survey from the variable costs related to preparation that are totally optional and at the discretion of each organization.

What is JCI doing to keep cost and value of accreditation in line?

JCI has improved the value of accreditation by introducing new standards for 2008 that set new international expectations for quality and patient safety, and by introducing a new survey process the Tracer Methodology developed by The Joint Commission. This new methodology increases interaction and learning during the survey and adds lasting value by demonstrating to organizations an ongoing self-assessment methodology. JCI has reduced total cost of an accreditation survey by training surveyors in many parts of the world. Regionally based surveyors greatly reduce travel costs. In addition, they are frequently familiar with the culture and language of the countries in which they survey.

Can we obtain an estimate of the cost of a survey for our organization?

Yes download the relevant application from the JCI web site, complete the application and submit it to JCI accreditation. Make sure to indicate it is for an estimate. Access the application for your program of interest on the accreditation program pages.
