Exercise PHY: U6-21-1 : Magnetic Fields 1. An electron enters at right angles into a uniform magnetic field with speed v. (a) Explain why the path of the electron is circular and the speed is constant. (b) Show that the radius of the circular path is given by r 2. 8. An electron with a speed 2.0 x 107ms-1 enters at right angle into a region of magnetic field between two plates as shown. The plate separation is 4.0cm. If the electron just misses the opposite plate, what is the strength of the magnetic field?

An electron with a velocity of 3.5 x 107ms-1 enters at a right angle into a magnetic field of flux density 0.50mT. What will be the radius of the path of the electron while in the field? An electron enters perpendicularly into a magnetic field with a velocity of 5.0 x 107ms-1. It experiences a force of 4.0 x 10-12N. (a) What is the magnitude of the magnetic flux density? (b) What is the radius of its path? A cathode ray beam is bent in a circle of radius 4.0cm by a uniform magnetic field of flux density 5.0mT. What is the potential difference applied between the electrodes of the cathode ray tube? A uniform magnetic field of strength 4mT is sued to deflect a beam of electrons into a circular path of diameter 50mm. (a) Calculate the speed of electrons. (b) If the field strength is halved, what will be the new diameter? An electron with a velocity of 4.0 x 107ms-1 enters at an angle of 60 into a uniform magnetic field of density 2.0mT. The subsequent path of the electron is a helix. By resolving the motion into two perpendicular directions, find (a) the radius of the helix, (b) the pitch of the helix. An electron is accelerated from rest by a potential difference of 12kV. It then enters at right angle into a uniform magnetic field of strength 100mT. Calculate (a) the speed of the electron on entering the field, (b) the radius of its circular path in the magnetic field.

A uniform electric field E = 3 x 105Vm-1 and a uniform magnetic field B = 0.05T are applied perpendicular to each other in a region. An electron moves perpendicularly to the two fields in this region without any net deflection. (a) Draw a sketch to show the path of the electron with respect to the electric and magnetic fields. (b) Calculate the magnitude of the velocity of the electron.

10. A proton perpendicularly enters a uniform magnetic field. (a) Describe and explain the path of the proton in the field. (b) If the charge on the proton is 1.6 x 10-19C, its initial velocity is 5.0 x 107ms-1, and the magnetic flux density is 1.8T, calculate the radius of the path of the proton. [Ratio of charge to mass for a proton = 9.64 x 107 C kg-1] 11. The specific charge of an electron is 1.76 x 1011Ckg-1 (specific charge is the charge per unit mass). An electron moves through a uniform magnetic field of magnitude 1.5 x 10-3T at a speed of 2.5 x 107ms-1. Calculate the (a) radius of the circular path of the electron (b) period of the circular motion.

(a) Determine the position of the point where the resultant magnetic field will be zero, expressing your answer in terms of d. (b) If the force acting on the wires is 192 Nm-1, calculate the value of d.

15. An electron of velocity v enters a region with a uniform magnetic field B as shown in the figure. The direction of the magnetic field is perpendicular to and out of the plane of the paper.

13. The figure shows two concentric coils P of radius 10.0 cm and Q of radius 15.0 cm each with 100 turns. When a current of 1.0 A flows in P in a clockwise direction, with no current in Q, a certain magnetic field is produced at the centre O. How much current must now flow in Q, and in which direction must it flow, so that the resultant magnetic field at the centre O is 200 T in the same direction as the initial magnetic field? [ is the magnetic permeability of the medium.]

(a) Describe the subsequent motion of the electron. (b) If an electron is to move in a straight line in the magnetic field, how would you use a uniform electric field to achieve this? Draw a diagram to illustrate how the electric field is placed. (c) If instead of an electron, a proton was to move with the same velocity as the electron, how would you alter the magnitude and the direction of the electric field to make it move in a straight line? 16. A positively charged particle of magnitude q moves with a uniform velocity v perpendicular to a crossed magnetic and electric field without deflection. Describe and explain the subsequent movement of each of the following particles which enter the same crossed field in a perpendicular direction. (a) A positively charged particle of magnitude 2q moving the velocity v. (b) A negatively charged particle of magnitude q moving with velocity v. (c) A positively charge particle of magnitude q moving with velocity 2v. 17. In a moving coil galvanometer, the coil of 500 turns has a rectangular shape of dimensions 3.0 cm x 4.0 cm. The radial magnetic field has a magnetic flux density of 0.18 T. (a) What will the torque on the coil be when a current of 0.012 A flows in it? (b) After a long period, the magnetic field has grown weaker. How would the readings of the galvanometer be affected? 2

14. The figure shows a long straight wire in the east-west direction. It carries a current of 25.0 A. The Earths magnetic field which is horizontal and points north has a magnitude of 6.0 x 10-5 T. Calculate the resultant magnetic field at points (a) P and (b) Q shown in the figure.
