COURSE DESCRIPTION: Provides an in-depth analysis of the financial planning process. Topics include the CFP Boards Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility; emergency fund planning; credit and debt management; financial institutions; educational funding; property titling; and monetary settlement planning.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the conclusion of the course, students should be able to: Understand the steps involved in the financial planning process. Demonstrate knowledge of the ethical principles and standards applicable to Certified Financial Planners. Demonstrate knowledge of time value of money calculations. Understand the basic components of developing a personal financial plan, including: information gathering, goal development, risk tolerance, plan implementation, and plan monitoring. Understand the basic goals of the financial planning process including: wealth creation, risk management, college planning, tax planning, retirement planning, and estate planning. Analyze client information as the basis for developing appropriate strategies for financial goal achievement. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK and MATERIALS: Text: Personal Finance, Madura, third edition, Pearson Education. Financial Calculator: A financial calculator is required. (DO NOT mistake it for the math calculator. The financial calculator has the PV and FV keys. They are readily available at office supply stores. ) The Texas Instruments BA II Plus Financial Calculator is recommended.

Grade Evaluation There will be two exams during the quarter. The exams will be weighted according to the table below. NO MAKEUP exams will be given. If a student is absent for an exam, the grade will be recorded as 0. Homework will be assigned each week. The assignments will pave the way for understanding of the concepts presented. Weekly assignments will account for 20% of the grade. Individual projects will be developed by the students. These will be assigned during the quarter. They will account for 30% of the grade. NOTES: The instructor reserves the right to adjust or change the course outline. If that occurs, the students will be given notice of such. Students are expected to act professionally and follow college guidelines on integrity. Students with documented disabilities are encouraged to speak with the instructor so accommodations can be made. ATTENDANCE: Two points will be deducted from your grade each time you miss a class. If you miss more than 5 classes, you automatically fail the course. There are no exceptions.
