J a n e L a n d e r s i s a G e r t r u d e C o n a w a y Va n d e r b i l t P r o f e s s o r o f H i s t o r y. S h e i s t h e author of numerous books, book chapters, and articles on the history of Africans i n C u b a a n d i n t h e I b e r i a n A t l a n t i c Wo r l d , a n d h a s b e e n c o n d u c t i n g r e s e a r c h in Cuba since 1991. Her latest book Atlantic Creoles in the Age of Revolutions (Cambridge, Mass., 2010) includes two chapters on Cuba. Landers directs the E S S S S d i g i t a l p r e s e r v a t i o n p r o j e c t a n d a r c h i v e ( h t t p : / / w w w. v a n d e r b i l t . e d u / e s s s / index.php) which is preserving the oldest church records for Africans and Indians in the Americas, focusing on Cuba, Brazil and Colombia. She has consulted on a variety of archaeological projects, documentary films, and museum exhibits and is currently working on two monographsone about an enslaved Mandinga and his various Atlantic lives and another on runaway slave communities around the Iberian Atlantic.

Sunday, March 3: depart MiaMi / arrive havana Morning charter flight from Miami to Havana. Bienvenidos a Havana! Meet your Cuban host and head to the colorful neighborhood of Callejon de Hamel for a short stop. Here youll find brilliant mural paintings, stalls selling herbs for curing colds and lovesickness alike, and of course, music everywhere. Meet Salvador Gonzalez Escalona, whose prolific murals, adorn the neighborhood. Lunch is in Malecon, the heart of Old Havana. Afterwards, stroll the cobblestone streets of Old Havana. (L,D) Monday, March 4: havana No trip to Cuba is complete without a visit to a cigar factory, and that is where we start today. See Havanas Plaza de la Revolucion, Cemetery of Columbus, the Miramar area, and dramatic Morro Castle. Travel to the village of Jaimanitas to view the works of Jose Rodiguez Fuster, whose art has become a cherished part of Cuban culture. Visit the Museo Bellas Artes. Early evening private lecture by an historian from the University of Havana. (B,L) SPECIAL EVENT: Lunch at Mr. Fuster s private home and studio. SPECIAL EVENT: Private lecture by an historian from the University of Havana discussing the current and historical relationships between Cuba and the USA. tueSday, March 5: havana / Finca vigia / cojiMar / alaMar Ernest Hemingway lived in Cuba from 1939 to 1960. Visit his mansion, Finca Vigia, where his 9,000-book library is preserved, as well as his famous fishing boat, Pilar. Later, visit the village of Cojimar, setting for the novel The Old Man and the Sea. In the afternoon visit the magnificent El Capitolio and the Museum of the Revolution. Lunch is at Hemingways favorite, La Bodeguita del Medio. (B,L,D) WedneSday, March 6: Santa clara / Sancti SpirituS / trinidad Drive along Cubas Autopista Highway to Santa Clara and explore the Museum and Mausoleum of Che Guevara. Continue to the delightful town square of Sancti Spiritus. This is a wonderful place to photograph with its charming horse carriages and local population going about their daily business. Arrive Trinidad, a Spanish Colonial treasure, in the late afternoon. (B,L,D) thurSday, March 7: trinidad / valle de loS ingenioS Trinidads former great wealth was garnered not in the town itself, but in the surrounding verdant valley known as Valle do los Ingenios. Take a the local steam train and chug to the valleys focal point, Hacienda Manaca Iznaga. After lunch at the Hacienda, return to Trinidads Plaza Mayor with its historic center. This evening visit some of the local music cafes - the spirit may move you to join the locals for some salsa or Afro-Cuban dancing on the cobblestone streets! (B,L,D) SPECIAL EVENT: Dinner at one of Trinidads private homes known as Paladars. Friday, March 8: trinidad / cienFuegoS / havana Drive to Cienfuegos to explore the main square of this striking French colonial city. Be sure not to miss the historical Teatro Terry. Lunch is served at the magnificent Palacio del Valle overlooking the Bay of Cienfuegos. Return to Havana. (B,L) Saturday, March 9: havana / laS terrazaS / havana Today visit Las Terrazas Nature Park, a must see in Cuba and known worldwide for its magnificent scenic beauty. This afternoon explore Old Havana on your own, or visit to private studio and home of Cuban artist Eduardo Roco Choco. Farewell dinner is on the rooftop restaurant of The Ambos Mundos Hotel, where Hemingway lived and wrote For Whom the Bell Tolls. A live musical performance a la Buena Vista Social Club and salsa dancing will liven the evening. (B,L,D) SPECIAL EVENT: An authentic country outdoor lunch served at a local farmhouse.
