2 MIND MAP TO DEFINE THE NEED FOR IMPROVEMENTS

Rationale
Before changes can take place one has to identify the scope for improvement. This exercise aims to make the learners first aware of different fields of influence that promote Burnout in general and then to reflect on possible influences on their own situation/organisation.

Aims
Getting to know different fields of influences that promote Burnout Adapting the general knowledge into ones organisation/situation Defining (organisational and other) influential factors that promote Burnout within ones team Analysing the structure of the organisation, work environment Analysing the positions, processes, or points of intersection which need to be changed or improved Defining the needs for improvements

Training method applied

Single or group work Group discussion

Accessories
Flipchart Copy of appendix Paper cards Pens Pin board or flipchart Glue dots

Number of participants: 2-15 Duration of activity: 2560 minutes Description of activity

The trainer hands out the mind map (appendix) which describes different fields that influence Burnout. Then he/she encourages the learners to transfer these fields into his/her team and to define possible influences that promote Burnout there (also in a type of mind map). This can be done either in single or group work. In the next step the trainer asks the participants to think about the three most important influential factors in their picture and to mark them with a sticker. After 15 minutes of group and single work the trainer collects all results, pins them on the pin board or flip chart and asks the learners for their feedback.

Tips for the trainer

The trainer can ask questions that might help the learners to reflect: With regard to Burnout in your organisation/team: what could influence the Burnout promotion?

Which fields have an impact on Burnout? Where are improvements/changes necessary to reduce the promotion of Burnout? If the trainer has the impression that the learners have difficulties to start with the mind-mapping process he/she can make them reflect on their own life: Thinking of my life, what could promote Burnout? The trainer has to explain to the participants that the priority list for changes is individual.

Summary of the activity

The participants get to identify different fields of influence with regard to Burnout and reflect on them in terms of their organisational/team situation. Priorities for changes get defined by the learners.
